Motivational characteristics in distance education
This review of literature is about motivational characteristics of the distance education learner. Provided is a brief overview of literature in the areas of distance education, the adult learner, and motivation of the adult learner in a distance education setting
The Influence of Investment on Generation 1.5
This study seeks to look at the relationship between Generation 1.5 language learners, and the investment that is made. It reflects on the influence that student language investment in an English-speaking high school has on the language identity and social capital of Generation 1.5. Following the learning patterns of three different immigrant students, readers will observe the differences and effects of investment in school programs, as well as the involvement and availability of ESL programs in public school systems
An Evaluation of Findings from a SBIRT Training Program in Counselor Education
The effective implementation of empirically supported interventions is critical for the mitigation of problematic substance use. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) has been identified as an efficacious approach for initial response to individuals who have, or are at risk of developing, a substance use disorder. For SBIRT to be delivered appropriately, helping professionals must be adequately trained in its implementation. As a part of a three-year grant project, counselor educators at a large Midwestern university provided intensive training on SBIRT to students in a counselor education program. The outcomes of this training, specifically related to satisfaction, opinion, knowledge, and perceived competence, are presented in this article
Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training with Counselor Education Students
Counselors should be proficient in screening for problematic substance use and also demonstrate the ability to provide a brief intervention, when appropriate. As part of a three-year grant project, counselor educators at one institution provided intensive training on Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to clinical mental health counseling students. This SBIRT protocol is designed to promote early detection and effective intervention for clients at risk of developing a substance use disorder. The purpose of this article is to present an in-depth narrative related to the process, content, and pedagogical methods of the training. The authors also address the lessons learned throughout the experience and provide recommendations to core faculty that may plan on incorporating SBIRT into curriculum
GATA-3 is involved in the development of serotonergic neurons in the caudal raphe nuclei
Abstract
The GATA-3 transcription factor shows a specific and restricted expression pattern in the developing and adult mouse brain. In the present study we investigated the role of GATA-3 in the caudal raphe system, which is known to operate as a modulator of motor activity. We demonstrate that virtually all neurons in the caudal raphe nuclei that express GATA-3 also produce serotonin. Absence of GATA-3, as analyzed in chimeric -/- mice, affects the cytoarchitecture of serotonergic neurons in the caudal raphe nuclei. As a result the chimeras show a serious defect in their locomotor performance on a rotating rod. In sum, we conclude that GATA-3 plays a major role in the development of the serotonergic neurons of the caudal raphe nuclei, and that it is crucial for their role in locomotion
Observation of Coherently Coupled Cation Spin Dynamics in an Insulating Ferrimagnetic Oxide
Many technologically useful magnetic oxides are ferrimagnetic insulators,
which consist of chemically distinct cations. Here, we examine the spin
dynamics of different magnetic cations in ferrimagnetic NiZnAl-ferrite
(NiZnAlFeO) under continuous microwave
excitation. Specifically, we employ time-resolved x-ray ferromagnetic resonance
to separately probe Fe and Ni cations on different sublattice
sites. Our results show that the precessing cation moments retain a rigid,
collinear configuration to within 2. Moreover, the effective
spin relaxation is identical to within 10% for all magnetic cations in the
ferrite. We thus validate the oft-assumed ``ferromagnetic-like'' dynamics in
resonantly driven ferrimagnetic oxides, where the magnetic moments from
different cations precess as a coherent, collective magnetization
