    Guardianship for Popular Sobriety in Russia at the Beginning of 20th Century: from Wine Monopoly to “Dry Law”

    The article is devoted to the guardianship of popular sobriety — institutions created by the government of the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th century to organize the fight against excessive alcohol consumption at the provincial and district levels. The study describes the situation with the consumption of alcoholic beverages in Russia at the turn of the XIX—XX centuries, provides the main provisions of the state wine monopoly, introduced in 1895 with the direct participation of the Minister of Finance S. Yu. Witte. Based on the Charter of Guardianship of People’s Sobriety, the authors describe their powers, composition, and features of work organization. Based on the analysis of diverse sources (including unpublished archival sources), the article characterizes the diverse activities of guardianship in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as its assessment by contemporaries. The conclusion is made about the relatively low efficiency of the work of sober institutions due to their bureaucracy and insufficient funding. The article describes the problem of reforming the guardianship, which was discussed with varying intensity in the 1900—1910s in the Ministry of Finance, the State Council, public and zemstvo circles. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the problems faced by the guardianship of popular sobriety during the First World War after the introduction of the “Prohibition”. The scientific novelty of the research lies in an attempt to analyze the entire set of issues related to the activities of guardianship in the period under review, starting from documents of a legal and office-work nature, statistical materials, periodicals, journalistic and memoir literature

    Hydrodynamical Simulation of Astrophysical Flows: High-Performance GPU Implementation

    We present a new hydrodynamical code GPUPEGAS 2.0 for 3D simulation of astrophysical flows using the GPUs. This code is an extension of GPUPEGAS code developed in 2014 for simulation of interacting galaxies. GPUPEGAS 2.0 is based on the Authors' numerical method of high order of accuracy for smooth solutions with small dissipation of the solution in discontinuities. The high order of accuracy and small dissipation are achieved by using the piecewise-linear representation of the physical variables in each dimension. The Rusanov flux allows one to simply vectorize the solution of the Riemann problem. The code was implemented for the cluster supercomputers NKS-30T (Siberian Supercomputer Center, SB RAS) and Uran (Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, UrB RAS) using the hybrid MPI+CUDA technology. To avoid the compute capability-specific implementations of reduction routines, the Thrust library was used. The optimal parameters for kernel function were found for the three-dimensional computation grid. The Sedov point blast problem was used as a main test one. The numerical experiment was performed to simulate the hydrodynamics of the type II supernova explosion for the grid size of 2563. A set of experiments was performed to study performance and scalability of the developed code. The performance of 25 GFLOPS was achieved using a single Tesla M2090 GPU. The speedup of 3 times was achieved using a node with 4 GPUs. By using 16 GPUs, 70% scalability was achieved. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.     EFFECT OF M2 MACROPHAGE-DERIVED SOLUBLE FACTORS ON DIFFERENTIATION OF SH-SY5Y CELLS

    Macrophages play a key role in triggering and regulation of neuroregeneration. The characteristic feature of macrophages is pronounced plasticity, which manifests itself in the ability of macrophages to change their functional phenotype depending on the micromilieu. Apoptotic cell clearance (efferocytosis) is an important inducer of a macrophage polarization to M2 phenotype under pathological settings. Previously, we have developed an original protocol for the generation of M2-like macrophages, polarized by efferocytosis under serum-deprived conditions (M2 (LS), Low Serum). The present study was aimed to assess a neuroregenerative potential of M2 (LS) macrophages. We studied their effect on the differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells in comparison with retinoic acid (RA). As the morphological criteria of differentiation we have assessed the relative content of differentiated cells, i.e., cells with a neurite length exceeding the cell body length, and the average neurite length on days 3, 7, and 13. The ratio of neuron-like (N-type) and epithelial-like (S-type) cells in cultures was also assessed. SH-SY5Y cells were characterized by a low level of spontaneous differentiation, both under standard conditions (10% FBS) and serum deprivation (1% FBS). Upon RA treatment, SH-SY5Y cells stopped proliferating and underwent neuronal differentiation. Cultivation of SH-SY5Y cells in the presence of M2 (LS) conditioned medium also led to a significant increase in the relative content of differentiated cells, the average length of neurite-like processes, as well as a change in the balance of S- and N-type cells towards a pronounced predominance of the latter. The morphological features of differentiation were significantly less pronounced at early stage (day 3) of differentiation as compared with the RA-induced changes and reached the level of positive control only at later stages (day 13) (p < 0.05). In contrast to retinoic acid, M2 (LS) conditioned medium induced neuronal differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells without suppressing their proliferative activity. The data obtained may indicate a high neuroregenerative potential of M2 macrophages in vitro, which is realized through soluble factors and manifests itself in promoting SH-SY5Y differentiation

    OMPEGAS: Optimized Relativistic Code for Multicore Architecture

    The paper presents a new hydrodynamical code, OMPEGAS, for the 3D simulation of astrophysical flows on shared memory architectures. It provides a numerical method for solving the three-dimensional equations of the gravitational hydrodynamics based on Godunov’s method for solving the Riemann problem and the piecewise parabolic approximation with a local stencil. It obtains a high order of accuracy and low dissipation of the solution. The code is implemented for multicore processors with vector instructions using the OpenMP technology, Intel SDLT library, and compiler auto-vectorization tools. The model problem of simulating a star explosion was used to study the developed code. The experiments show that the presented code reproduces the behavior of the explosion correctly. Experiments for the model problem with a grid size of (Formula presented.) were performed on an 16-core Intel Core i9-12900K CPU to study the efficiency and performance of the developed code. By using the autovectorization, we achieved a 3.3-fold increase in speed in comparison with the non-vectorized program on the processor with AVX2 support. By using multithreading with OpenMP, we achieved an increase in speed of 2.6 times on a 16-core processor in comparison with the vectorized single-threaded program.     Consistent alpha-cluster description of the 12C (0^+_2) resonance

    The near-threshold 12C (0^+_2) resonance provides unique possibility for fast helium burning in stars, as predicted by Hoyle to explain the observed abundance of elements in the Universe. Properties of this resonance are calculated within the framework of the alpha-cluster model whose two-body and three-body effective potentials are tuned to describe the alpha - alpha scattering data, the energies of the 0^+_1 and 0^+_2 states, and the 0^+_1-state root-mean-square radius. The extremely small width of the 0^+_2 state, the 0_2^+ to 0_1^+ monopole transition matrix element, and transition radius are found in remarkable agreement with the experimental data. The 0^+_2-state structure is described as a system of three alpha-particles oscillating between the ground-state-like configuration and the elongated chain configuration whose probability exceeds 0.9

    Oxidative protein modification of the temporal bone tissue in chronic otitis media

    Aim. To study the role of oxidative protein modification of bone tissue proteins in the formation of destruction of temporal bone structures in chronic otitis media. Methods. The study included 139 patients aged 16-75 years with a verified diagnosis of chronic otitis media, who are candidates for surgical treatment. Depending on the method of surgical treatment, patients are divided into four groups (by nosology and complications and reoperations): patients with tubotympanic otitis media and epitympanic antral otitis, without complications and with local or intracranial complications, after reconstructive sanitizing ear surgery. The state of the processes of oxidative modification of proteins was evaluated in the bone tissue of the middle ear cavities, obtained intraoperatively, by the content of carbonyl products with the use of spectrophotometry. The data were processed by descriptive statistics and were presented in the form of a median and a range between quartiles with an estimate of the reliability of the intergroup differences by the Mann-Whitney U-criterion. Results. A comparison of the indicators characterizing the oxidative modification of bone tissue proteins of the temporal bone in patients with complicated and recurrent forms of chronic otitis media demonstrates a greater degree of free radical destruction of proteins, primarily markers of early stages of protein damage and an increase of aldehyde products, both at the basal level and in response to induction in a complicated course of the disease. Conclusion. The obtained data allow drawing a conclusion about a high level of oxidative stress in bone tissue in destructive forms of chronic otitis media accompanied by relapses and complications, and about the perspectives of antioxidant pre-operative use taking into account the features of oxidative stress in bone tissue in patients with chronic otitis media

    Large negative velocity gradients in Burgers turbulence

    We consider 1D Burgers equation driven by large-scale white-in-time random force. The tails of the velocity gradients probability distribution function (PDF) are analyzed by saddle-point approximation in the path integral describing the velocity statistics. The structure of the saddle-point (instanton), that is velocity field configuration realizing the maximum of probability, is studied numerically in details. The numerical results allow us to find analytical solution for the long-time part of the instanton. Its careful analysis confirms the result of [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78 (8) 1452 (1997) [chao-dyn/9609005]] based on short-time estimations that the left tail of PDF has the form ln P(u_x) \propto -|u_x|^(3/2).Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX, 10 figure

    Giant Coulomb broadening and Raman lasing on ionic transitions

    CW generation of anti-Stokes Raman laser on a number of blue-green argon-ion lines (4p-4s, 4p-3d) has been demonstrated with optical pumping from metastable levels 3d'^2G, 3d^4F. It is found, that the population transfer rate is increased by a factor of 3-5 (and hence, the output power of such Raman laser) owing to Coulomb diffusion in the velocity space. Measured are the excitation and relaxation rates for the metastable level. The Bennett hole on the metastable level has been recorded using the probe field technique. It has been shown that the Coulomb diffusion changes shape of the contour to exponential cusp profile while its width becomes 100 times the Lorentzian one and reaches values close to the Doppler width. Such a giant broadening is also confirmed by the shape of the absorption saturation curve.Comment: RevTex 18 pages, 5 figure
