    Strategic Issues in University Management

    Get PDF
In this paper we will discuss developments in the field of scientific information with the aim to determine and analyse some of the pertinent strategic issues related to higher education (HE) as seen from the stakeholder perspective of the university and its management

Hopf and Lie algebras in semi-additive Varieties

    Get PDF
We study Hopf monoids in entropic semi-additive varieties with an emphasis on adjunctions related to the enveloping monoid functor and the primitive element functor. These investigations are based on the concept of the abelian core of a semi-additive variety variety and its monoidal structure in case the variety is entropic.Comment: 13 page

Sausages, one of the oldest forms of processed food, are a means of using and preserving animal trimmings. The hot dog is a specialized sausage. It originated in Germany where it was named “dachshund” sausage because it looked like the popular badger (dachs) hound (hund). The U.S. hot dog originated at the Polo Grounds in New York. Vendors hawked dachshund sausages in buns while a sports cartoonist sketched a barking dachshund nestled warmly in a bun. He labeled the cartoon “hot dog”. Today the hot dog enjoys popularity throughout the world

Stochastic Resonance in Neuron Models: Endogenous Stimulation Revisited

The paradigm of stochastic resonance (SR)---the idea that signal detection and transmission may benefit from noise---has met with great interest in both physics and the neurosciences. We investigate here the consequences of reducing the dynamics of a periodically driven neuron to a renewal process (stimulation with reset or endogenous stimulation). This greatly simplifies the mathematical analysis, but we show that stochastic resonance as reported earlier occurs in this model only as a consequence of the reduced dynamics.Comment: Some typos fixed, esp. Eq. 15. Results and conclusions are not affecte

Titanium carbide coatings for aerospace ball bearings

    Get PDF
In conventional ball bearings, steel to steel contacts between the balls and the raceways are at the origin of microwelds which lead to material transfer, surface roughening, lubricant breakdown, and finally to a loss in the bearing performances. To minimize the microwelding tendencies of the contacting partners it is necessary to modify their surface materials; the solid to solid collisions themselves are difficult to avoid. The use of titanium carbide coated steel balls can bring spectacular improvements in the performances and lifetimes of both oil-grease lubricated and oil-grease free bearings in a series of severe applications
