SyntenyVista
Visualization of genome comparisons is an important research tool in biology, medicine and agricultural research. We present a new visualization system, SyntenyVista, which allows for interactive exploration of genome comparisons. It incorporates a novel feature called cartoon scaling designed to improve the user's ability to understand gene relationships. SyntenyVista is being deployed in the context of e-Science where it will provide an entry point to integrated data on genomes, animal models of disease, and disease genes
Evaluation of macrophyte control in 38 Florida lakes using triploid grass carp
Floridaās large number of shallow lakes, warm climate and
long growing season have contributed to the development of
excessive growths of aquatic macrophytes that have seriously
interfered with many water use activities. The introduction
of exotic aquatic macrophyte species such as hydrilla (
Hydrilla
verticillata
) have added significantly to aquatic plant problems
in Florida lakes. The use of grass carp (
Ctenopharyngodon
idella
) can be an effective and economical control for aquatic
vegetation such as hydrilla. Early stocking rates (24 to 74
grass carp per hectare of lake area) resulted in grass carp
consumption rates that vastly exceeded the growth rates of
the aquatic plants and often resulted in the total loss of all
submersed vegetation. This study looked at 38 Florida lakes
that had been stocked with grass carp for 3 to 10 years with
stocking rates ranging from < 1 to 59 grass carp per hectare
of lake and 1 to 207 grass carp per hectare of vegetation to
determine the long term effects of grass carp on aquatic macrophyte
communities. The median PAC (percent area coverage)
value of aquatic macrophytes for the study lakes after
they were stocked with grass carp was 14% and the median
PVI (percent volume infested) value of aquatic macrophytes
was 2%. Only lakes stocked with less than 25 to 30 fish per
hectare of vegetation tended to have higher than median
PAC and PVI values. When grass carp are stocked at levels of
> 25 to 30 fish per hectare of vegetation the complete control
of aquatic vegetation can be achieved, with the exception of
a few species of plants that grass carp have extreme difficulty
consuming. If the management goal for a lake is to control
some of the problem aquatic plants while maintaining a
small population of predominately unpalatable aquatic
plants, grass carp can be stocked at approximately 25 to 30
fish per hectare of vegetation
Establishing the potential for using routine data on Incapacity Benefit to assess the local impact of policy initiatives
<i>Background</i>: Incapacity Benefit (IB) is the key contributory benefit for people who are incapable of work because of illness or disability.
<i>Methods</i>: The aims were to establish the utility of routinely collected data for local evaluation and to provide a descriptive epidemiology of the IB population in Glasgow and Scotland for the period 2000ā05 using data supplied by the Department for Work and Pensions.
<i>Results</i>: Glasgow's IB population is large in absolute and relative terms but is now falling, mainly due to a decrease in on flow. Claimants, tend to be older, have a poor work history and suffer from mental health problems. The rate of decline has been greater in Glasgow than Scotland, although the rate of on flow is still higher.
<i>Conclusions</i>: Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data can be used locally to provide important insights into the dynamics of the IB population. However, to be truly useful, more work needs to be undertaken to combine the DWP data with other information

The Host Galaxy of GRB980703 at Radio Wavelengths - a Nuclear Starburst in a ULIRG
We present radio observations of GRB980703 at 1.43, 4.86, and 8.46 GHz for
the period of 350 to 1000 days after the burst. These radio data clearly
indicate that there is a persistent source at the position of GRB980703 with a
flux density of approximately 70 Jy at 1.43 GHz, and a spectral index,
, where . We show that emission
from the afterglow of GRB980703 is expected to be one to two orders of
magnitude fainter, and therefore cannot account for these observations. We
interpret this persistent emission as coming from the host galaxy --- the first
example of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) host detection at radio wavelengths. We show
that emission from an AGN is unlikely, and find that it can be explained as a
result of a star-formation rate (SFR) of massive stars (M>5M) of 90
M/yr, which gives a total SFR of M/yr. Using the
correlation between the radio and far-IR (FIR) luminosities of star-forming
galaxies, we find that the host of GRB980703 is at the faint end of the class
of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), with L_{FIR}\sim few\times
10^{12} L. From the radio measurements of the offset between the burst
and the host, and the size of the host, we conclude that GRB980703 occurred
near the center of the galaxy in a region of maximum star formation. A
comparison of the properties of this galaxy with radio and optical surveys at a
similar redshift () reveals that the host of GRB980703 is an
average star-forming galaxy. This result has significant implications for the
potential use of a GRB-selected galaxy sample for the study of galaxies and the

Interventions by healthcare professionals to improve management of physical long-term conditions in adults who are homeless: a systematic review protocol
Introduction People experiencing homelessness are at increased risk of, and have poorer outcomes from, a range of physical long-term conditions (LTCs). It is increasingly recognised that interventions targeting people who are homeless should be tailored to the specific needs of this population. This systematic review aims to identify, describe and appraise trials of interventions that aim to manage physical LTCs in homeless adults and are delivered by healthcare professionals.
Methods and analysis Seven electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Assia, Scopus, PsycINFO and CINAHL) will be searched from 1960 (or inception) to October 2016 and supplemented by forward citation searching, handsearching of reference lists and searching grey literature. Two reviewers will independently review titles, abstract and full-texts using DistillerSR software. Inclusion criteria include (1) homeless adults with any physical LTC, (2) interventions delivered by a healthcare professional (any professional trained to provide any form of healthcare, but excluding social workers and professionals without health-related training), (3) comparison with usual care or an alternative intervention, (4) report outcomes such as healthcare usage, physical and psychological health or well-being or cost-effectiveness, (5) randomised controlled trials, non-randomised controlled trials, controlled before-after studies. Quality will be assessed using the Cochrane EPOC Risk of Bias Tool. A meta-analysis will be performed if sufficient data are identified; however, we anticipate a narrative synthesis will be performed.
Ethics and dissemination This review will synthesise existing evidence for interventions delivered by healthcare professionals to manage physical LTCs in adults who are homeless. The findings will inform the development of future interventions and research aiming to improve the management of LTCs for people experiencing homelessness. Ethical approval will not be required for this systematic review as it does not contain individual patient data. We will disseminate the results of this systematic review via conference presentations, healthcare professional networks, social media and peer-reviewed publication
A systematic review of interventions by healthcare professionals to improve management of non-communicable diseases and communicable diseases requiring long-term care in adults who are homeless
Objective: Identify, describe and appraise trials of interventions delivered by healthcare professionals to manage non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases that require long-term care or treatment (LT-CDs), excluding mental health and substance use disorders, in homeless adults.
Design: Systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs and controlled beforeāafter studies. Interventions characterised using Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) taxonomy. Quality assessed using EPOC risk of bias criteria.
Data sources: Database searches (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA) and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), hand searching reference lists, citation searches, grey literature and contact with study authors.
Setting: Community.
Participants: Adults (ā„18 years) fulfilling European Typology of Homelessness criteria.
Intervention: Delivered by healthcare professionals managing NCD and LT-CDs.
Outcomes: Primary outcome: unscheduled healthcare utilisation. Secondary outcomes: mortality, biological markers of disease control, adherence to treatment, engagement in care, patient satisfaction, knowledge, self-efficacy, quality of life and cost-effectiveness.
Results: 11 studies were included (8 RCTs, 2 quasi-experimental and 1 feasibility) involving 9ā520 participants (67%ā94%āmale, median age 37ā49 years). Ten from USA and one from UK. Studies included various NCDs (n=3); or focused on latent tuberculosis (n=4); HIV (n=2); hepatitis C (n=1) or type 2 diabetes (n=1). All interventions were complex with multiple components. Four described theories underpinning intervention. Three assessed unscheduled healthcare utilisation: none showed consistent reduction in hospitalisation or emergency department attendance. Six assessed adherence to specific treatments, of which four showed improved adherence to latent tuberculosis therapy. Three concerned education case management, all of which improved disease-specific knowledge. No improvements in biological markers of disease (two studies) and none assessed mortality.
Conclusions: Evidence for management of NCD and LT-CDs in homeless adults is sparse. Educational case-management interventions may improve knowledge and medication adherence. Large trials of theory-based interventions are needed, assessing healthcare utilisation and outcomes as well as assessment of biological outcomes and cost-effectiveness
Beyond Rentiership: Standardisation, Intangibles and Value Capture in Global Production
We examine corporate rentiership in the contemporary economy and suggest that the idea we are in a moment of step-change within capitalism may be premature. Implicit in arguments for a step-change is the claim that the present-day economy emphasises unproductive or rentier forms rather than the more productive and entrepreneurial forms of the past. In contrast, we argue that to understand our current situation we need to focus on the division of labour and most especially on processes of standardisation and the rise of intangible assets. Moving from Marxās understanding of rent as a class relation, we re-embed rent within the circuit of capital and the realm of value distribution to investigate the class dynamics (among labour, capital and the state) through which giant firms seem to generate value out of rentierism. We argue that these class dynamics include the crucial and unexplored relation between standardisation and intangibles. We suggest standardisation within the division of labour renders people, places, and things interchangeable and that, in contrast, intangible assets differentiate them. When intangible assets emerge as new forms of property, they enable owners to generate scarcity and exert direct and/or indirect control over the wider division of labour. Through examining the combined rise of standardisation and intangible assets within the technical division of labour, we demonstrate how hierarchy within the social division of labour empowers some corporations to capture value produced elsewhere within the circuit of capital
Gamma-ray bursts and X-ray melting of material as a potential source of chondrules and planets
The intense radiation from a gamma-ray burst (GRB) is shown to be capable of
melting stony material at distances up to 300 light years which subsequently
cool to form chondrules. These conditions were created in the laboratory for
the first time when millimeter sized pellets were placed in a vacuum chamber in
the white synchrotron beam at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
(ESRF). The pellets were rapidly heated in the X-ray and gamma-ray furnace to
above 1400 C melted and cooled. This process heats from the inside unlike
normal furnaces. The melted spherical samples were examined with a range of
techniques and found to have microstructural properties similar to the
chondrules that come from meteorites. This experiment demonstrates that GRBs
can melt precursor material to form chondrules that may subsequently influence
the formation of planets. This work extends the field of laboratory
