Personality inventory study of Y.M.C.A. Adult program secretaries

Leaders in the Young Men’s Christian Association have boon concerned for some time about the decline of activity and comparative lack of participation on the part of young adults in its program. The concern is understandable in view of the fact that the Y.M.C.A. originally started around a nucleus of young adults - young men engaged in the drapery trades in London. The Y has emerged through the years as a leader in the field of boys’ work, and work with older adults, and has lost its original character of working among young adults. A Commission was appointed by the Association of Secretaries’ Adult Program Section to study the problems affecting work with young adults. Its findings were reported at a conference of Adult Program Secretaries, and later published in a publication entitled At Work With Young Adults . (1) Following this, it was decided that further exploration of the problems of working with young adults was needed. A Committee, made up of a cross-section of the Adult Program Secretaryship, was called together in St. Louis on two occasions. This group outlined a plan which offered two next steps for study: first, Blocks to Effective Program Within the Secretary Himself , and, second, Blocks to Effective Program Within the Movement . Commissions were appointed to follow through on these studies. The original purpose of this study was to determine if there are ’\u27blocks to effective adult program within the Adult Program Secretary himself. It was felt that perhaps there are basic motivational factors, personality traits, and other psychological characteristics that might be an obstacle to a man as he attempts to do a quality adult program job. The overall problem posed by the Commission then was: Is there a relationship between the job performance of an Adult Program Secretary and his psychological makeup? Due to the limitations of time and expense, it was decided to limit this particular study of psychological factors within the Secretary to a study of personality. This study, therefore, represents a start in the direction of studying the psychological makeup of Y.M.C.A. Adult Program Secretaries

Evolution of the Fermi surface of BiTeCl with pressure

We report measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the giant Rashba semiconductor BiTeCl under applied pressures up to ~2.5 GPa. We observe two distinct oscillation frequencies, corresponding to the Rashba-split inner and outer Fermi surfaces. BiTeCl has a conduction band bottom that is split into two sub-bands due to the strong Rashba coupling, resulting in two spin-polarized conduction bands as well as a Dirac point. Our results suggest that the chemical potential lies above this Dirac point, giving rise to two Fermi surfaces. We use a simple two-band model to understand the pressure dependence of our sample parameters. Comparing our results on BiTeCl to previous results on BiTeI, we observe similar trends in both the chemical potential and the Rashba splitting with pressure.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Routes to Ktaadn

A reprint of an article that appeared in Appalachia, vol. II, no. 4. From the introduction: Mt. Ktaadn is so inaccessible that practically it is remote even to New Englanders. It is probably true that a greater number of eastern men now annually visit Pike\u27s Peak than penetrate to the Maine mountain, and a hundred Bostonians have been among the Alps for one who has climbed Ktaadn. Of the few who have published narratives of their excursions to this unique mountain, some have presented more or less definite accounts of the routes by which they reached it. Thus the delightful article of Thoreau, entitled \u27Ktaadn,\u27 is mainly a circumstantial description of his journey thither, rather than of the mountain itself... But as the reading of all that has been written relating to Ktaadn would yield distinct information upon only two of the four possible routes to it, it seems desirable to present at one view, and in narrow compass, the leading characteristics of all, -- their relative lengths, advantages and disadvantages. Hamlin identifies and describes four routes: via Mattawamkeag and the Penobscot; via Brownville and the Joe Merry Lakes; via Moosehead Lake and the Penobscot River; and via Sherman and the Wassataquoik Stream

Perceived managerial and leadership effectiveness in Mexico and the USA: a comparative study of effective and ineffective managerial behaviour

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of Mexican and US employees about effective and ineffective managerial behaviour. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative multiple cross-case comparative analysis of findings obtained from two past emic replication studies of observed effective and ineffective managerial behaviour carried out in Mexico and the USA respectively was conducted. Findings Notwithstanding the significant cultural variances between Mexico and the US underlined by various cross-cultural studies, our findings suggest that Mexican and US employees perceive effective and ineffective managerial behaviour in a very similar manner. Research limitations While the results of our study suggest that culture may not play a significant role in the way people perceive managerial and leadership effectiveness, we suggest that more replication studies with larger and more balanced gender samples using different methods need to be performed in both countries. Practical implications The findings of our study may be relevant for HRD professionals in both countries when providing training to expatriates for international assignments. Reinforcing the set of managerial practices that are perceived as effective in these two countries, and emphasizing those practices that may be particular to Mexico and the US respectively, could lead to an improvement in the performance of Mexican executives managing in the US and US executives managing in Mexico
