THE ETHICAL DILEMMA OF EXPATRIATES IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: A LIMINAL PERSPECTIVE
Adjustment to emerging economies is benefited if Western expatriates recognise they are experiencing a liminal situation, which can lead to the instrumental utilisation of coping strategies as equivalent to rites of passage between distinct ethical frameworks. Given the characteristics ascribed to rites, the ethical dilemma resulting from the simultaneous demand to abide by local rules and to respect Western ethical principles is more easily solved. Consequently, effective and sustainable adjustment is favoured. Implications for organisations and individuals are discussed. JEL codes:
Topological Vertex, String Amplitudes and Spectral Functions of Hyperbolic Geometry
We discuss the homological aspects of the connection between quantum string
generating function and the formal power series associated to the dimensions of
chains and homologies of suitable Lie algebras. Our analysis can be considered
as a new straightforward application of the machinery of modular forms and
spectral functions (with values in the congruence subgroup of ) to the partition functions of Lagrangian branes, refined vertex and open
string partition functions, represented by means of formal power series that
encode Lie algebra properties. The common feature in our examples lies in the
modular properties of the characters of certain representations of the
pertinent affine Lie algebras and in the role of Selberg-type spectral
functions of an hyperbolic three-geometry associated with -series in the
computation of the string amplitudes.Comment: Revised version. References added, results remain unchanged. arXiv

Dilatonic, Current-Carrying Cosmic String
We study the implications of a scalar-tensorial gravity for the metric of an
isolated self-gravitating superconducting cosmic string. These modifications
are induced by an arbitrary coupling of a massless scalar field to the usual
tensorial field in the gravitational Lagrangian. We derive the metric in the
weak-field approximation and we analyse the behaviour of light in this
spacetime. We end with some discussions.Comment: 12 pp, Latex, no figures, based on a talk given by M. E. X. Guimaraes
