Continuous Hawking-Page transitions in Einstein-scalar gravity
We investigate continuous Hawking-Page transitions in Einstein's gravity
coupled to a scalar field with an arbitrary potential in the weak gravity
limit. We show that this is only possible in a singular limit where the
black-hole horizon marginally traps a curvature singularity. Depending on the
subleading terms in the potential, a rich variety of continuous phase
transitions arise. Our examples include second and higher order, including the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. In the case when the scalar is dilaton,
the condition for a continuous phase transition lead to (asymptotically)
linear-dilaton background. We obtain the scaling laws of thermodynamic
functions, as well as the viscosity coefficients near the transition. In the
limit of weak gravitational interactions, the bulk viscosity asymptotes to a
universal constant, independent of the details of the scalar potential. As a
byproduct of our analysis we obtain a one-parameter family of kink solutions in
arbitrary dimension d that interpolate between AdS near the boundary and
linear-dilaton background in the deep interior. The continuous Hawking-Page
transitions found here serve as holographic models for normal-to superfluid
transitions.Comment: 35 pages + appendice
Gravitational collapse and thermalization in the hard wall model
We study a simple example of holographic thermalization in a confining field
theory: the homogeneous injection of energy in the hard wall model. Working in
an amplitude expansion, we find black brane formation for sufficiently fast
energy injection and a scattering wave solution for sufficiently slow
injection. We comment on our expectations for more sophisticated holographic
QCD models.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figure
The holographic quantum effective potential at finite temperature and density
We develop a formalism that allows the computation of the quantum effective
potential of a scalar order parameter in a class of holographic theories at
finite temperature and charge density. The effective potential is a valuable
tool for studying the ground state of the theory, symmetry breaking patterns
and phase transitions. We derive general formulae for the effective potential
and apply them to determine the phase transition temperature and density in the
scaling region.Comment: 27 page
Periodontitis: A multifaceted disease of tooth-supporting tissues
Periodontitis is an infection-driven inflammatory disease in which the composition of biofilms plays a significant role. Dental plaque accumulation at the gingival margin initiates an inflammatory response that, in turn, causes microbial alterations and may lead to drastic consequences in the periodontium of susceptible individuals. Chronic inflammation affects the gingiva and can proceed to periodontitis, which characteristically results in irreversible loss of attachment and alveolar bone. Periodontitis appears typically in adult-aged populations, but young individuals can also experience it and its harmful outcome. Advanced disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. In addition, periodontitis is associated with many chronic diseases and conditions affecting general health.</p
Black-hole quasinormal modes and scalar glueballs in a finite-temperature AdS/QCD model
We use the holographic AdS/QCD soft-wall model to investigate the spectrum of
scalar glueballs in a finite temperature plasma. In this model, glueballs are
described by a massless scalar field in an AdS_5 black hole with a dilaton
soft-wall background. Using AdS/CFT prescriptions, we compute the boundary
retarded Green's function. The corresponding thermal spectral function shows
quasiparticle peaks at low temperatures. We also compute the quasinormal modes
of the scalar field in the soft-wall black hole geometry. The temperature and
momentum dependences of these modes are analyzed. The positions and widths of
the peaks of the spectral function are related to the frequencies of the
quasinormal modes. Our numerical results are found employing the power series
method and the computation of Breit-Wigner resonances.Comment: Revision: Results unchanged. More discussions on the model and on the

Holography and Thermodynamics of 5D Dilaton-gravity
The asymptotically-logarithmically-AdS black-hole solutions of 5D dilaton
gravity with a monotonic dilaton potential are analyzed in detail. Such
theories are holographically very close to pure Yang-Mills theory in four
dimensions. The existence and uniqueness of black-hole solutions is shown. It
is also shown that a Hawking-Page transition exists at finite temperature if
and only if the potential corresponds to a confining theory. The physics of the
transition matches in detail with that of deconfinement of the Yang-Mills
theory. The high-temperature phase asymptotes to a free gluon gas at high
temperature matching the expected behavior from asymptotic freedom. The thermal
gluon condensate is calculated and shown to be crucial for the existence of a
non-trivial deconfining transition. The condensate of the topological charge is
shown to vanish in the deconfined phase.Comment: LaTeX, 61 pages (main body) + 58 pages (appendix), 25 eps figures.

Universal rapidity scaling of entanglement entropy inside hadrons from conformal invariance
When a hadron is probed at high energy, a non-trivial quantum entanglement
entropy inside the hadron emerges due to the lack of complete information about
the hadron wave function extracted from this measurement. In the high energy
limit, the hadron becomes a maximally entangled state, with a linear dependence
of entanglement entropy on rapidity, as has been found in a recent analysis
based on parton description. In this Letter, we use an effective conformal
field theoretic description of hadrons on the lightcone to show that the linear
dependence of the entanglement entropy on rapidity found in parton description
is a general consequence of approximate conformal invariance and does not
depend on the assumption of weak coupling. Our result also provides further
evidence for a duality between the parton and string descriptions of hadrons.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Holographic Conformal Window - A Bottom Up Approach
We propose a five-dimensional framework for modeling the background geometry
associated to ordinary Yang-Mills (YM) as well as to nonsupersymmetric gauge
theories possessing an infrared fixed point with fermions in various
representations of the underlying gauge group. The model is based on the
improved holographic approach, on the string theory side, and on the
conjectured all-orders beta function for the gauge theory one. We first analyze
the YM gauge theory. We then investigate the effects of adding flavors and show
that, in the holographic description of the conformal window, the geometry
becomes AdS when approaching the ultraviolet and the infrared regimes. As the
number of flavors increases within the conformal window we observe that the
geometry becomes more and more of AdS type over the entire energy range.Comment: 20 Pages, 3 Figures. v2: references adde
A Pilot Study - Comparison between a Novel Combination of Bioactive Glass with Clodronate and Bioactive Glass Alone as a Treatment for Chronic Periodontitis
Bioactive glass (BAG) and clodronate are both used for bone regeneration. In this pilot clinical study, we compared the effect of BAG and a novel BAG+clodronate combination as a topical maintenance phase treatment for chronic periodontitis. Two dental residual pockets were treated in each subject (n=10): one with BAG alone and the other with combination product, by applying the products subgingivally for 10 min once a week for four weeks. We describe the effects of these investigational products to the clinical parameters of periodontitis and two bone metabolism markers (osteoprotegerin and osteocalcin). Additionally, subjective satisfaction for the treatment was evaluated. The results must be considered as directional, understanding that further investigation is needed to confirm the findings. Based on clinical parameters measured both treatments could benefit as maintenance therapy for chronic periodontitis. The positive effect of the combination product on tooth sensitivity may bring additional benefits in comparison to the use of BAG alone. Both treatments were well tolerated and safe. </p
