    Generalized boundary strata classes

    We describe a generalization of the usual boundary strata classes in the Chow ring of M‟g,n\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}. The generalized boundary strata classes additively span a subring of the tautological ring.     Two-Pulse Propagation in a Partially Phase-Coherent Medium

    We analyze the effects of partial coherence of ground state preparation on two-pulse propagation in a three-level Λ\Lambda medium, in contrast to previous treastments that have considered the cases of media whose ground states are characterized by probabilities (level populations) or by probability amplitudes (coherent pure states). We present analytic solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations, and we extend our analysis with numerical solutions to the same equations. We interpret these solutions in the bright/dark dressed state basis, and show that they describe a population transfer between the bright and dark state. For mixed-state Λ\Lambda media with partial ground state phase coherence the dark state can never be fully populated. This has implications for phase-coherent effects such as pulse matching, coherent population trapping, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that for partially phase-coherent three-level media, self induced transparency (SIT) dominates EIT and our results suggest a corresponding three-level area theorem.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures.     Closed extended r-spin theory and the Gelfand–Dickey wave function

    We study a generalization of genus-zero r-spin theory in which exactly one insertion has a negative-one twist, which we refer to as the “closed extended” theory, and which is closely related to the open r-spin theory of Riemann surfaces with boundary. We prove that the generating function of genus-zero closed extended intersection numbers coincides with the genus-zero part of a special solution to the system of differential equations for the wave function of the rth Gelfand–Dickey hierarchy. This parallels an analogous result for the open r-spin generating function in the companion paper Buryak et al. (2018) to this work

    Two-Pulse Propagation in Media with Quantum-Mixed Ground States

    We examine fully coherent two-pulse propagation in a lambda-type medium, under two-photon resonance conditions and including inhomogeneous broadening. We examine both the effects of short pulse preparation and the effects of medium preparation. We contrast cases in which the two pulses have matched envelopes or not, and contrast cases in which ground state coherence is present or not. We find that an extended interpretation of the Area Theorem for single-pulse self-induced transparency (SIT) is able to unify two-pulse propagation scenarios, including some aspects of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). We present numerical solutions of both three-level and adiabatically reduced two-level density matrix equations and Maxwell's equations, and show that many features of the solutions are quickly interpreted with the aid of analytic solutions that we also provide for restricted cases of pulse shapes and preparation of the medium. In the limit of large one-photon detuning, we show that the two-level equations commonly used are not reliable for pulse Areas in the 2π\pi range, which allows puzzling features of previous numerical work to be understood.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures.     Dietary Supplementation With Seed Oil From Transgenic Camelina sativa Induces Similar Increments in Plasma and Erythrocyte Docosahexaenoic Acid and Eicosapentaenoic Acid to Fish Oil in Healthy Humans

    EPA and DHA are required for normal cell function and can also induce health benefits. Oily fish are the main source of EPA and DHA for human consumption. However, food choices and concerns about the sustainability of marine fish stocks limit the effectiveness of dietary recommendations for EPA+DHA intakes. Seed oils from transgenic plants that contain EPA+DHA are a potential alternative source of EPA and DHA. The present study investigated whether dietary supplementation with transgenic Camelina sativa seed oil (CSO) that contained EPA and DHA was as effective as fish oil (FO) in increasing EPA and DHA concentrations when consumed as a dietary supplement in a blinded crossover study. Healthy men and women (n 31; age 53 (20-74) yrs) were randomised to consume 450 mg/day EPA+DHA provided either as either CSO or FO for 8 weeks, followed by 6 weeks washout and then switched to consuming the other test oil. Fasting venous blood samples were collected at the start and end of each supplementation period. Consuming the test oils significantly (P < 0.05) increased EPA and DHA concentrations in plasma triacylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and cholesteryl esters. There were no significant differences between test oils in the increments of EPA and DHA. There was no significant difference between test oils in the increase in the proportion of erythrocyte EPA+DHA (CSO, 12%; P < 0.0001 and FO, 8%; P = 0.02). Together these findings show that consuming CSO is as effective as FO for increasing EPA and DHA concentrations in humans

    Identification of tetrahydrocarbazoles as novel multifactorial drug candidates for treatment of Alzheimer's disease

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder and the most frequent cause of dementia. To date, there are only a few approved drugs for AD, which show little or no effect on disease progression. Impaired intracellular calcium homeostasis is believed to occur early in the cascade of events leading to AD. Here, we examined the possibility of normalizing the disrupted calcium homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) store as an innovative approach for AD drug discovery. High-throughput screening of a small-molecule compound library led to the identification of tetrahydrocarbazoles, a novel multifactorial class of compounds that can normalize the impaired ER calcium homeostasis. We found that the tetrahydrocarbazole lead structure, first, dampens the enhanced calcium release from ER in HEK293 cells expressing familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD)-linked presenilin 1 mutations. Second, the lead structure also improves mitochondrial function, measured by increased mitochondrial membrane potential. Third, the same lead structure also attenuates the production of amyloid-beta (A beta) peptides by decreasing the cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by beta-secretase, without notably affecting alpha- and gamma-secretase cleavage activities. Considering the beneficial effects of tetrahydrocarbazoles addressing three key pathological aspects of AD, these compounds hold promise for the development of potentially effective AD drug candidates
