    Anthropological Observations on Science in the North: The Role of the Scientist in Human Development in the Northwest Territories

    The social context of research provides the background for assessing present and potential roles scientists may play in the Northwest Territories. This context includes diverse cultural and interest groups and an ever-quickening pace of social change. Increasing scholarly and ethical demands are being placed on the scientific community for academic accountability, public participation, education, and cross-cultural exchange of knowledge. These demands affect us, our disciplines, and our ability to carry on research. The Northern Cultural Heritage Project, an applied anthropology and archaeology program, serves as a case study illustrating the integration of research with the northern social context. Additional potential roles for researchers are discussed, including increasing information return, education through exposure to field science work, research ethics and social context awareness for novice professionals, and policy participation.     A note on monopole moduli spaces

    We discuss the structure of the framed moduli space of Bogomolny monopoles for arbitrary symmetry breaking and extend the definition of its stratification to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. We show that each stratum is a union of submanifolds for which we conjecture that the natural L2L^2 metric is hyperKahler. The dimensions of the strata and of these submanifolds are calculated, and it is found that for the latter, the dimension is always a multiple of four.Comment: 17 pages, LaTe

    Inversion symmetric 3-monopoles and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold

    We consider 3-monopoles symmetric under inversion symmetry. We show that the moduli space of these monopoles is an Atiyah-Hitchin submanifold of the 3-monopole moduli space. This allows what is known about 2-monopole dynamics to be translated into results about the dynamics of 3-monopoles. Using a numerical ADHMN construction we compute the monopole energy density at various points on two interesting geodesics. The first is a geodesic over the two-dimensional rounded cone submanifold corresponding to right angle scattering and the second is a closed geodesic for three orbiting monopoles.Comment: latex, 22 pages, 2 figures.     BioMiCo:A supervised Bayesian model for inference of microbial community structure

    Here, we describe a novel hierarchical model for Bayesian inference of microbial communities (BioMiCo). The model takes abundance data derived from environmental DNA, and models the composition of each sample by a two-level hierarchy of mixture distributions constrained by Dirichlet priors. BioMiCo is supervised, using known features for samples and appropriate prior constraints to overcome the challenges posed by many variables, sparse data, and large numbers of rare species. The model is trained on a portion of the data, where it learns how assemblages of species are mixed to form communities and how assemblages are related to the known features of each sample. Training yields a model that can predict the features of new samples. We used BioMiCo to build models for three serially sampled datasets and tested their predictive accuracy across different time points. The first model was trained to predict both body site (hand, mouth, and gut) and individual human host. It was able to reliably distinguish these features across different time points. The second was trained on vaginal microbiomes to predict both the Nugent score and individual human host. We found that women having normal and elevated Nugent scores had distinct microbiome structures that persisted over time, with additional structure within women having elevated scores. The third was trained for the purpose of assessing seasonal transitions in a coastal bacterial community. Application of this model to a high-resolution time series permitted us to track the rate and time of community succession and accurately predict known ecosystem-level events

    Simulations of the Micro-Bunching Instability for SOLEIL and KARA Using Two Different VFP Solver Codes

    The longitudinal dynamics of a bunched electron beam is an important aspect in the study of existing and the development of new electron storage rings. The dynamics depend on different beam parameters as well as on the interaction of the beam with its surroundings. A well established method for calculating the resulting dynamics is to numerically solve the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation. Depending on the chosen parameters and the considered wakefields and impedances, different effects can be studied. One common application is the investigation of the longitudinal micro-wave and micro-bunching instabilities. The latter occurs for short electron bunches due to self-interaction with their own emitted coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In this contribution, two different VFP solvers are used to simulate the longitudinal dynamics with a focus on the micro-bunching instability at the Soleil synchrotron and the KIT storage ring KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator)

    Global Structure of Moduli Space for BPS Walls

    We study the global structure of the moduli space of BPS walls in the Higgs branch of supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges. We examine the structure in the neighborhood of a special Lagrangian submanifold M, and find that the dimension of the moduli space can be larger than that naively suggested by the index theorem, contrary to previous examples of BPS solitons. We investigate BPS wall solutions in an explicit example of M using Abelian gauge theory. Its Higgs branch turns out to contain several special Lagrangian submanifolds including M. We show that the total moduli space of BPS walls is the union of these submanifolds. We also find interesting dynamics between BPS walls as a byproduct of the analysis. Namely, mutual repulsion and attraction between BPS walls sometimes forbid a movement of a wall and lock it in a certain position; we also find that a pair of walls can transmute to another pair of walls with different tension after they pass through.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures; a few comments adde
