    Velocity variations of an Equatorial plume throughout a Jovian year

    Features in the equatorial zone of Jupiter show that the equatorial plume reported by Pioneer 10 has existed for an 11-year interval. During this interval the plume has shown an acceleration which can be interpreted as a constant component of 3 x 10 to minus 8th power m/sq cm and a sinusoidal component which anticorrelates with the planetocentric declination of the sun, D sub s, and has an amplitude of -0.96 meters per second per degree change of D sub s. The sinusoidal component has been interpreted in terms of solar heating. Throughout this interval of time the equatorial zone has appeared abnormally dark and has contained many dark projections along the northern edge. When the plume approaches to within 25 to 30 deg of these features they are deflected in the direction of motion of the plume and then dissipate or become obscured as the plume passes. After passage of the plume normal features are again observed

    Biofortification of common bean for higher iron concentration

    Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a staple food of smallholder farmers and poor urban consumers in Latin America and eastern-southern Africa among whom iron deficiency is frequent. Bean was domesticated in Mexico and the southern Andes, creating two distinct gene pools. Evaluation of a core collection of 1,441 entries revealed average concentrations of 55 mg kg−1 iron. A breeding target was set at 44 mg kg−1 iron above the level in a local check variety, while 50% of goal or a 22 mg kg−1 advantage was accepted as “biofortified.” In a bioefficacy trial among college-age women in Rwanda, high iron beans improved iron status and enhanced cognitive ability, brain function, and work efficiency. However, breeding progress has been slow, likely due in part to homeostatic mechanisms whereby organisms moderate iron and zinc uptake. This phenomenon may represent resistance to increasing concentration of these elements. Crosses between gene pools may “jumble” genes for homeostasis and permit high levels. A second breeding strategy is the use of sister species that evolved in iron-poor environments and that could be more receptive to iron uptake. Future breeding may also increase attention on improving bioavailability through mechanisms such as non-or-slow darkening grain or low phytate mutants. Changing dietary patterns in developed countries could increase iron deficiency and create demand for iron biofortified beans

    The retina of the human eye is made up of ten layers. One of these layers, the bacillary layer, is composed of 130 million rods and 7 million cones.(1) It would appear, in view of the unusually large proportion of rods to cones, that the rods were of much greater importance to the process of seeing than the cones,-— but this is not the case at all. The cones, it is true, are very thinly scattered throughout the peripheral area of the retina; so thinly scattered, in fact, as to appear almost entirely lacking. The proportion of cones increases, however, as the visual axis is approached. They become the exclusive element of the macula, that localized area directly in line with the visual axis.(2) Thus, the focal point of vision, plus a reasonable area of the retina surrounding it, is almost exclusively made up of cones. Are the cones, i.e., the agents of color vision, important to visual perception? They certainly are. They are, by far, the most influential factor in the process of seeing

    Pediatric sleep difficulties after moderate–severe traumatic brain injury

    The objective of this study is to systematically investigate sleep following moderate–severe pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). School-aged children with moderate–severe TBI identified via hospital records were invited to participate, along with a school-age sibling. Subjective reports and objective actigraphy correlates of sleep were recorded: Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), Sleep Self-Report questionnaire (SSR), and 5-night actigraphy. TBI participants (n = 15) and their siblings (n = 15) participated. Significantly more sleep problems were parent-reported (CSHQ: p = 0.003; d = 1.57), self-reported (SSR: p = 0.003; d = 1.40), and actigraph-recorded in the TBI group (sleep efficiency: p = 0.003; d = 1.23; sleep latency: p = 0.018; d = 0.94). There was no evidence of circadian rhythm disorders, and daytime napping was not prevalent. Moderate–severe pediatric TBI was associated with sleep inefficiency in the form of sleep onset and maintenance problems. This preliminary study indicates that clinicians should be aware of sleep difficulties following pediatric TBI, and their potential associations with cognitive and behavioral problems in a group already at educational and psychosocial risk

    Turbulent flow over a wavy boundary

Sinusoidal waves of three sizes were used to explore the variations of flow with wave size. Measurements of mean and turbulent velocities were taken with a two-wire method. Local heat transfer rates and pressures on the wavy surface were also measured. An equilibrium turbulent boundary layer, which conforms to Rotta's and Clauser's self-preservation requirements, develops in the region far downstream from the first wave. In the lower portion of this layer, the mean velocity is represented by the logarithmic velocity profile when the form-drag measurements of skin friction are used to determine the shift-in-origin. The roughness function is related to the wave height since the wavy surface is shown to be a "k" type surface. The velocity defect profile in the logarithmic form extends to higher values of yu*/ϐ*U∞ than those for smooth wall flows. Eddy viscosity results support the assumed logarithmic velocity variation in the lower part of the boundary layer. Measurements of shear stress by either the two-wire or the heated-film method disagree with the form drag measurements of skin friction. The wavy surface is an extended surface windbreak since it reduces the overall wind speed above the surface and creates vortices between the waves.     1.57 ÎŒm InGaAsP/InP surface emitting lasers by angled focus ion beam etching

    The characteristics of 1.57 Όm InGaAsP/InP surface emitting lasers based on an in-plan ridged structure and 45° beam deflectors defined by angled focused ion beam (FIB) etching are reported. With an externally integrated beam deflector, threshold currents and emission spectra identical to conventional edge emitting lasers are achieved. These results show that FIB etching is a very promising technique for the definition of high quality mirrors and beam deflectors on semiconductor heterostructures for a variety of integrated optoelectronic devices

    Ultranarrow conducting channels defined in GaAs-AlGaAs by low-energy ion damage

    We have laterally patterned the narrowest conducting wires of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) material reported to date. The depletion induced by low-energy ion etching of GaAs-AlGaAs 2DEG structures was used to define narrow conducting channels. We employed high voltage electron beam lithography to create a range of channel geometries with widths as small as 75 nm. Using ion beam assisted etching by Cl2 gas and Ar ions with energies as low as 150 eV, conducting channels were defined by etching only through the thin GaAs cap layer. This slight etching is sufficient to entirely deplete the underlying material without necessitating exposure of the sidewalls that results in long lateral depletion lengths. At 4.2 K, without illumination, our narrowest wires retain a carrier density and mobility at least as high as that of the bulk 2DEG and exhibit quantized Hall effects. Aharonov–Bohm oscillations are seen in rings defined by this controlled etch-damage patterning. This patterning technique holds promise for creating one-dimensional conducting wires of even smaller sizes

    This nursery was organized in response to the need for improving adaptation and obtaining genetic information on the resistance or reaction to the different stress environments (biotic and abiotic) to which beans are subjected in production areas. Results are given for the best black- and red-seeded lines of the 1987 VIDAC, covering characteristics such as 100 seeds, days to flowering and physiological maturity, wt. of and response to diseases such as rust (Uromyces phaseoli), bacterioses (Xanthomonas phaseoli), BGMV, and web blight (Thanatephorus cucumeris). The yield potential and genetic adaptation of the best materials over different sites are also analyzed. Information on these national and regional trials should be collected in an efficient regional information and documentation center. Se presentan los resultados de las mejores lineas de semilla negra y semilla roja de los VIDAC de 1987, para las caracteristicas de peso de 100 semillas, dias a floracion y a madurez fisiologica, y respuesta a enfermedades como roya (Uromyces phaseoli), bacteriosis (Xanthomonas phaseoli), BGMV y mustia hilachosa (Thanathephorus cucumeris). Tambien, se examinan el potencial de rendimiento y la adaptacion genetica de los mejores materiales en diferentes sitios.
