    A Formal Treatment of Generalized Preferential Attachment and its Empirical Validation

    Generalized preferential attachment is defined as the tendency of a vertex to acquire new links in the future with respect to a particular vertex property. Understanding which properties influence link acquisition tendency (LAT) gives us a predictive power to estimate the future growth of network and insight about the actual dynamics governing the complex networks. In this study, we explore the effect of age and degree on LAT by analyzing data collected from a new complex-network growth dataset. We found that LAT and degree of a vertex are linearly correlated in accordance with previous studies. Interestingly, the relation between LAT and age of a vertex is found to be in conflict with the known models of network growth. We identified three different periods in the network's lifetime where the relation between age and LAT is strongly positive, almost stationary and negative correspondingly

    Acoustic conditions in orchestra pits: are metadiffusers a potential solution?

    Rising concerns about public health and safety have progressively induced a change in control of noise regulations, specifically on those applicable to the work environment. These directives have been developed to protect employees from harmful side effects of their working conditions, firstly targeting high noise levels generated by heavy machinery in industry. Nowadays, noise control regulations are widely effective and applicable to nearly all working environments, including institutions dedicated to the arts, such as opera houses. To the latter, directives on noise control are of major concern as opera performances tend to generate very high sound levels, especially in the area of the orchestra pit – the sunken space between stage and audience. In such context, management faces a difficult task conforming to noise regulations as they must balance the sometimes competing demands to (i) dutifully protect their employees – musicians and others – from any harmful ‘sounds’ or ‘noise’ that might be generated, and (ii) deliver world-class operatic art for the public, where noise regulations might compromise the culture of the art form. ‘Sound’ and ‘noise’ are two terms of intense interest when dealing with control of noise regulations in the entertainment sector. Indeed, noise is generally described as ‘unwanted’ sound, judged as unpleasant, whereas music is considered most of the time as a ‘desirable’ and pleasant sound; leading to a debate on the pertinence of noise regulations within the musical arts. Such debate has recently been discussed in the High Court in London, where the court favoured an orchestral viola player who claimed to have suffered noise induced hearing loss during a rehearsal of Wagner's Valkyrie1; the major argument being that the opera house exceeded industry-wide standards on noise control, viz. daily LAE > 85 dBA. Such a case has no precedent in UK history, raising concerns for other opera houses and music spaces on how to enforce noise regulations without affecting the performances’ nature. This leads to the question of whether noise control regulations should apply to all industries, regardless of the type of sound they generate

    Acinetobacter baumannii in intensive care unit: A novel system to study clonal relationship among the isolates

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nosocomial infections surveillance system must be strongly effective especially in highly critic areas, such as Intensive Care Units (ICU). These areas are frequently an epidemiological epicentre for transmission of multi-resistant pathogens, like <it>Acinetobacter baumannii</it>. As an epidemic outbreak occurs it is very important to confirm or exclude the genetic relationship among the isolates in a short time. There are several molecular typing systems used with this aim. The Repetitive sequence-based PCR (REP-PCR) has been recognized as an effective method and it was recently adapted to an automated format known as the DiversiLab system.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present study we have evaluated the combination of a newly introduced software package for the control of hospital infection (VIGI@ct) with the DiversiLab system. In order to evaluate the reliability of the DiversiLab its results were also compared with those obtained using f-AFLP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The combination of VIGI@ct and DiversiLab enabled an earlier identification of an <it>A. baumannii </it>epidemic cluster, through the confirmation of the genetic relationship among the isolates. This cluster regards 56 multi-drug-resistant <it>A. baumannii </it>isolates from several specimens collected from 13 different patients admitted to the ICU in a ten month period. The <it>A. baumannii </it>isolates were clonally related being their similarity included between 97 and 100%. The results of the DiversiLab were confirmed by f-AFLP analysis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The early identification of the outbreak has led to the prompt application of operative procedures and precautions to avoid the spread of pathogen. To date, 6 months after the last <it>A. baumannii </it>isolate, no other related case has been identified.</p

    The construct of individualism–collectivism (IND-COL) has become the definitive standard in cross-cultural psychology, management, and related fields. It is also among the most controversial, in particular, with regard to the ambiguity of its dimensionality: Some view IND and COL as the opposites of a single continuum, whereas others argue that the two are independent constructs. We explored the issue through seven different tests using original individual-level data from 50 studies and meta-analytic data from 149 empirical publications yielding a total of 295 sample-level observations that were collected using six established instruments for assessing IND and COL as separate constructs. Results indicated that the dimensionality of IND-COL may depend on (a) the specific instrument used to collect the data, (b) the sample characteristics and the cultural region from which the data were collected, and (c) the level of analysis. We also review inconsistencies, deficiencies, and challenges of conceptualizing IND-COL and provide guidelines for developing and selecting instruments for measuring the construct, and for reporting and meta-analyzing results from this line of research

    Genetic Variants For Head Size Share Genes and Pathways With Cancer

    The size of the human head is highly heritable, but genetic drivers of its variation within the general population remain unmapped. We perform a genome-wide association study on head size (N = 80,890) and identify 67 genetic loci, of which 50 are novel. Neuroimaging studies show that 17 variants affect specific brain areas, but most have widespread effects. Gene set enrichment is observed for various cancers and the p53, Wnt, and ErbB signaling pathways. Genes harboring lead variants are enriched for macrocephaly syndrome genes (37-fold) and high-fidelity cancer genes (9-fold), which is not seen for human height variants. Head size variants are also near genes preferentially expressed in intermediate progenitor cells, neural cells linked to evolutionary brain expansion. Our results indicate that genes regulating early brain and cranial growth incline to neoplasia later in life, irrespective of height. This warrants investigation of clinical implications of the link between head size and cancer

    Current Migration Data and Main Problem Areas Relating to Syrian Refugees in Turkey

    The events that started in the neighbouring country Syria in March 2011 within the framework of the popular uprisings that took place in Arab countries such as Tunisia and Egypt, which is referred to as the "Arab Spring" in the literature, turned into great chaos and civil war in a short time. The civil war in Syria has brought along a great humanitarian tragedy, security problem and mass migration wave to neighbouring countries. Nearly ten million Syrians have turned to internal and external immigrants. In this context, humanitarian concerns and the "open door policy" that opened its borders to all Syrians seeking asylum in Turkey, there are already three and half million have been given temporary asylum to Syrian refugees. Despite the end of the wave of refugees, Turkey is still a case of escape and a country of asylum for refugees. Therefore, it is too essential to collect and analyse the latest migration trends in Turkey. In this study, first Turkey's latest migration trends, with their analysis of data and statistics, will be made, and graphs, maps and tables will support it. Then, the problems of Syrian refugees and Turkey's issues are facing through the process of dealing with the refugees. Besides, the study results available that refugees' problems and potential risks to Turkey are assessed

    The impact of distance education on the neck pain among teachers in times of COVID-19

    OBJECTIVE: In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic the format of education was forced to change from formal to distance in a considerably short time. The study aimed to analyze the changes in the prevalence and the severity of neck pain among teachers during the pandemic. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study analyzed the Neck Disability Index (NDI), a self-report questionnaire designed to assess the individual’s neck pain experience in daily life and rate a disability score due to neck pain, and numerical rating scale (NRS) report pairs completed by teachers. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 41.67±9.57. The majority were female (67.9 %) and were employed for less than 20 years in teaching (68.9%). The survey results collected at the beginning and at the end of the first year of the pandemic showed that: the mean session hours per week were 21.19±9.21 and 21.61±9.45, the mean NDI scores were 11.61±6.17 and 12.65±7.76, and the mean NRS scores were 3.05±2.96 and 4.75±3.13. The female participants scored significantly higher disability scores (p<0.001). The NRS scores were increased in both genders (p<0.001). The NDI scores, the disability grouping, and NRS were significantly associated with weekly session hours (p=0.011, p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). The NRS scores were increased in all age groups (p<0.001). The increase in weekly session hours was related to the NRS scores (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In one year during the pandemic, despite unchanged telework hours, a significant increase in neck pain incidence and pain severity was noted among teachers. Unexperienced employees in the line of distance working should receive adequate training to avoid not only musculoskeletal disorders but other physical and psychological unwanted effects
