Diagnostic Tool for Rating Suitable Partners in Licensing Agreements

    Get PDF
Purpose of the paper and literature addressed – This paper is part of a longitudinal research project. The key issue of the process of selecting suitable partners is discussed in its relevance to companies applying relational practices to licensing strategies. The applicability of the interaction approach and the effectiveness of relational practices are tested in their ability to initiate, develop and maintain these collaborative arrangements in an international context. The discussion takes into consideration the constraints to the applicability of relationship management practices in that context, and recommends a diagnostic tool to measure prospective licensees against in order to select them as business partners. The literature addressed includes that on entry modes and relational approaches in an international context. Research method – The paper uses a case study approach to investigate the issues identified. The firm that will provide the case study is a UK SME specializing in the development of chemical products. The company has used licensing as its primary strategy for international expansion. The research project is partly funded by the UK government. Research findings – Relational practices are essential to create the level of trust required for initial information exchanges. When applying them in new remote and culturally distant markets, these techniques need to be adapted to the local culture. In deploying a licensing strategy, building a successful relationship requires the selection of the “right” licensees, able to engage in complex interaction. We propose a diagnostic tool which we call Licensee Evaluation Scorecard (LES) which has this very function. Main contribution – The contribution of the research is to refine the current criteria used by companies, and recommended by literature, to select prospective parties to licensing and franchising agreements; and further refine the thinking on how relevant relational approaches are to the creation and later management of these relationships.Peer reviewe

Higher-Order Substrate Recognition of eIF2α by the RNA-Dependent Protein Kinase PKR

SummaryIn response to binding viral double-stranded RNA byproducts within a cell, the RNA-dependent protein kinase PKR phosphorylates the α subunit of the translation initiation factor eIF2 on a regulatory site, Ser51. This triggers the general shutdown of protein synthesis and inhibition of viral propagation. To understand the basis for substrate recognition by and the regulation of PKR, we determined X-ray crystal structures of the catalytic domain of PKR in complex with eIF2α. The structures reveal that eIF2α binds to the C-terminal catalytic lobe while catalytic-domain dimerization is mediated by the N-terminal lobe. In addition to inducing a local unfolding of the Ser51 acceptor site in eIF2α, its mode of binding to PKR affords the Ser51 site full access to the catalytic cleft of PKR. The generality and implications of the structural mechanisms uncovered for PKR to the larger family of four human eIF2α protein kinases are discussed

An Intelligent Information Retrieval System Using Automatic Word Sense Disambiguation

This is the published version. Copyright De GruyterThis paper aims to establish that an intelligent contextual infonnation retrieval (IR) system can improve the quality of search results by retrieving more relevant results than those obtained with traditional search engines. Search engines capable of implicit, explicit, and no contextual retrieval were designed and implemented and their performances studied. Experimental results showed that search engines with contextual IR produce results that are more relevant, and the outcomes further indicate that there is no perceived gain in choosing specifically any one of the two approaches of implicit or explicit. The performance of the indexing mechanism, as it classifies document tokens with their appropriate contexts/word sense, was evaluated. The effectiveness of the word sense disambiguation process was found to depend to a great extent on the process (implementation) as well as the raw data (thesaurus)
