Comparison of Bond Character in Hydrocarbons and Fullerenes
We present a comparison of the bond polarizabilities for carbon-carbon bonds
in hydrocarbons and fullerenes, using two different models for the fullerene
Raman spectrum and the results of Raman measurements on ethane and ethylene. We
find that the polarizabilities for single bonds in fullerenes and hydrocarbons
compare well, while the double bonds in fullerenes have greater polarizability

Superconductivity in the Intercalated Graphite Compounds C6Yb and C6Ca
In this letter we report the discovery of superconductivity in the
isostructural graphite intercalation compounds C6Yb and C6Ca, with transition
temperatures of 6.5K and 11.5K respectively. A structural characterisation of
these compounds shows them to be hexagonal layered systems in the same class as
other graphite intercalates. If we assume that all the outer s-electrons are
transferred from the intercalant to the graphite sheets, then the charge
transfer in these compounds is comparable to other superconducting graphite
intercalants such as C8K 1,2 . However, the superconducting transition
temperatures of C6Yb and C6Ca are up to two orders of magnitude greater.
Interestingly, superconducting upper critical field studies and resistivity
measurements suggest that these compounds are significantly more isotropic than
pure graphite. This is unexpected as the effect of introducing the intercalant

The strain energy and Young's Moduli of single-wall Carbon nanotubules calculated from the electronic energy-band theory
The strain energies in straight and bent single-walled carbon nanotubes
(SWNTs) are calculated by taking account of the total energy of all the
occupied band electrons. The obtained results are in good agreement with
previous theoretical studies and experimental observations. The Young's modulus
and the effective wall thickness of SWNT are obtained from the bending strain
energies of SWNTs with various cross-sectional radii. The repulsion potential
between ions contributes the main part of the Young's modulus of SWNT.
The wall thickness of SWNT comes completely from the overlap of electronic
orbits, and is approximately of the extension of
orbit of carbon atom. Both the Young's modulus and the wall thickness
are independent of the radius and the helicity of SWNT, and insensitive to the
fitting parameters.
The results show that continuum elasticity theory can serve well to describe
the mechanical properties of SWNTs.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

Superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds
The field of superconductivity in the class of materials known as graphite
intercalation compounds has a history dating back to the 1960s. This paper
recontextualizes the field in light of the discovery of superconductivity in
CaC6 and YbC6 in 2005. In what follows, we outline the crystal structure and
electronic structure of these and related compounds. We go on to experiments
addressing the superconducting energy gap, lattice dynamics, pressure
dependence, and how this relates to theoretical studies. The bulk of the
evidence strongly supports a BCS superconducting state. However, important
questions remain regarding which electronic states and phonon modes are most
important for superconductivity and whether current theoretical techniques can
fully describe the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on
pressure and chemical composition

If treated, the early symptoms in all age groups could be reversible. If untreated, hyperammonemia could be toxic and cause irreversible brain damage to the developing brain.Objective: There are major challenges that worsen the outcome of hyperammonemic individuals in the Middle East. These include: lack of awareness among emergency department physicians about proper management of hyperammonemia, strained communication between physicians at primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals, and shortage of the medications used in the acute management of hyperammonemia. Therefore, the urge to develop regional guidelines is extremely obvious.Method: We searched PubMed and Embase databases to include published materials from 2011 to 2014 that were not covered by the European guidelines, which was published in 2012. We followed the process of a Delphi conference and involved one preliminary meeting and two follow-up meetings with email exchanges between the Middle East Hyperammonemia and Urea Cycle Disorders Scientific Group regarding each draft of the manuscript.Results and discussion: We have developed consensus guidelines based on the highest available level of evidence. The aim of these guidelines is to homogenize and harmonize the treatment protocols used for patients with acute hyperammonemia, and to provide a resource to not only metabolic physicians, but also physicians who may come in contact with individuals with acute hyperammonemia.Conclusion: These suggested guidelines aim to ease the challenges faced by physicians dealing with acute hyperammonemia in the region. In addition, guidelines have demonstrated useful collaboration between experts in the region, and provides information that will hopefully improve the outcomes of patients with acute hyperammonemia.
