    Magnetic-Field-Independent Ultrasonic Dispersions in the Magnetically Robust Heavy Fermion System SmOs4Sb12

    Get PDF
    Elastic properties of the filled skutterudite compound SmOs4_4Sb12_{12} have been investigated by ultrasonic measurements. The elastic constant C11(ω)C_{11}(\omega) shows two ultrasonic dispersions at \sim15 K and \sim53 K for frequencies ω\omega between 33 and 316 MHz, which follow a Debye-type formula with Arrhenius-type temperature-dependent relaxation times, and remain unchanged even with applied magnetic fields up to 10 T. The corresponding activation energies were estimated to be E2E_2 = 105 K and E1E_1 = 409 K, respectively. The latter, E1E_1, is the highest value reported so far in the Sb-based filled skutterudites. The presence of magnetically robust ultrasonic dispersions in SmOs4_4Sb12_{12} implies a possibility that an emergence of a magnetically insensitive heavy fermion state in this system is associated with a novel local charge degree of freedom which causes the ultrasonic dispersion.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Elastic Properties and Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Dense Kondo Compound Ce0.75La0.25B6

    Full text link
    We have investigated the elastic properties of the cubic dense Kondo compound Ce0.75La0.25B6 by means of ultrasonic measurements. We have obtained magnetic fields vs temperatures (H-T) phase diagrams under magnetic fields along the crystallographic [001], [110] and [111] axes. An ordered phase IV showing the elastic softening of c44 locates in low temperature region between 1.6 and 1.1 K below 0.7 T in all field directions. The phase IV shows an isotropic nature with regard to the field directions, while the antiferro-magnetic phase III shows an anisotropic character. A remarkable softening of c44 and a spontaneous trigonal distortion εyz+εzx+εxy recently reported by Akatsu et al. [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72 (2003) 205] in the phase IV favor a ferro-quadrupole (FQ) moment of Oyz+Ozx+Oxy induced by an octupole ordering.Comment: 9 figures, Strongly Correlated Electron

    Lattice Distortion and Octupole Ordering Model in CexLa1-xB6

    Full text link
    Possible order parameters of the phase IV in CexLa1-xB6 are discussed with special attention to the lattice distortion recently observed. A \Gamma_{5u}-type octupole order with finite wave number is proposed as the origin of the distortion along the [111] direction. The \Gamma_8 crystalline electric field (CEF) level splits into three levels by a mean field with the \Gamma_{5u} symmetry. The ground and highest singlets have the same quadrupole moment, while the intermediate doublet has an opposite sign. It is shown that any collinear order of \Gamma_{5u}-type octupole moment accompanies the \Gamma_{5g}-type ferro-quadrupole order, and the coupling of the quadrupole moment with the lattice induces the distortion. The cusp in the magnetization at the phase transition is reproduced, but the internal magnetic field due to the octupole moment is smaller than the observed one by an order of magnitude.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J.     Quadrupolar effect and rattling motion in heavy fermion superconductor PrOs_4Sb_{12}

    Full text link
    The elastic properties of a filled skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_{12} with a heavy Fermion superconductivity at T_C=1.85 K have been investigated. The elastic softening of (C_{11}-C_{12})/2 and C_{44} with lowering temperature down to T_C indicates that the quadrupolar fluctuation due to the CEF state plays a role for the Cooper paring in superconducting phase of PrOs_4Sb_{12}. A Debye-type dispersion in the elastic constants around 30 K revealed a thermally activated Gamma_{23} rattling due to the off-center Pr-atom motion obeying tau=tau_{0}exp(E/k_{B}T) with an attempt time tau_0=8.8*10^{-11} sec and an activation energy E=168 K. It is remarkable that the charge fluctuation of the off-center motion with Gamma_{23} symmetry may mix with the quadrupolar fluctuation and enhance the elastic softening of (C_{11}-C_{12})/2 just above T_C.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published to Phys. Spectral Correlation in Incommensurate Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    Full text link
    We investigate the energy spectra of clean incommensurate double-walled carbon nanotubes, and find that the overall spectral properties are described by the so-called critical statistics of Anderson metal-insulator transition. In the energy spectra, there exist three different regimes characterized by Wigner-Dyson, Poisson, and semi-Poisson distributions. This feature implies that the electron transport in incommensurate multi-walled nanotubes can be either diffusive, ballistic, or intermediate between them, depending on the position of the Fermi energy.Comment: final version to appear in Phys. Ginzburg-Landau Analysis for the Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superconductor

    Full text link
    Incommensurate antiferromangetic (AFM) order in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductor is investigated on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We formulate the two component Ginzburg-Landau model to discuss two degenerate incommensurate AFM states in the tetragonal crystal structure. Owing to the broken translation symmetry in the FFLO state, a multiple phase diagram of single-q phase and double-q phase is obtained under the magnetic field along [100] or [010] direction. Magnetic properties in each phase are investigated and compared with the neutron scattering and NMR measurements for a heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5. An ultrasonic measurement is proposed for a future experimental study to identify the AFM-FFLO state. The field orientation dependence of the AFM order in CeCoIn_5 is discussed.Comment: 8 page

    QCD corrections to decay-lepton polar and azimuthal angular distributions in e+e- -> t tbar in the soft-gluon approximation

    Get PDF
    QCD corrections to order alpha_s in the soft-gluon approximation to angular distributions of decay charged leptons in the process e+e- -> t tbar followed by semileptonic decay of t or tbar, are obtained in the e+e- centre-of-mass frame. As compared to distributions in the top rest frame, these have the advantage that they would allow direct comparison with experiment without the need to reconstruct the top rest frame. The results also do not depend on the choice of a spin quantization axis for t or tbar. Analytic expression for the triple distribution in the polar angle of t and polar and azimuthal angles of the lepton is obtained. Analytic expression is also derived for the distribution in the charged-lepton polar angle. Numerical values are discussed for total c.m. energies of 400 GeV, 800 GeV and 1500 GeV.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, 6 figures included in the submission. Full text link
    Using the Belle detector operating at the KEKB e+e- storage ring, we have measured the mean multiplicity and the momentum spectrum of neutral pions from the decays of the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure a mean of 4.70 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.22 neutral pions per Upsilon(4S) decay.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figs. Submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Observation of the decay B^0->D+D*-

    Full text link
    We report the first observation of the decay B^0->D+-D*-+ with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider operated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The sum of branching fractions B(B^0->D+D*-)+B(B^0->D-D*+) is measured to be (1.17+-0.26+0.22-0.25)x10^-3 using the full reconstruction method where both charmed mesons from B^0 decays are reconstructed. A consistent value ((1.48+-0.38+0.28-0.31)x10^-3) is obtained using a partial reconstruction technique that only uses the slow pion from the D*- ->bar D^0pi- decay and a fully reconstructed D+ to reconstruct the B^0.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Study of Exclusive B decays to Charmed Baryons

    Full text link
    Using 29.1fb-1 of data accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) with the Belle detector at KEKB, we have studied the decay modes B0bar->Lambda_c+ pbar pi+pi-, B- -> Lambda_c+ pbar pi-, and B0bar ->Lambda_c+ pbar. We report branching fractions of exclusive B decays to charmed baryons with four-, three- and two-body final states, including intermediate Sigma_c++ and Sigma_c0 states. We observed B0bar -> Sigma_c(2455)++pbar pi- for the first time with a branching fraction of (2.38+0.63-0.55+-0.41+-0.62)x10-4 and observed evidence for the two-body decay B- ->Sigma_c(2455)0 pbar with a branching fraction of (0.45+0.26-0.19+-0.07+-0.12)x10-4. We also set improved upper limits for the two-body decays B0bar -> Lambda_c+ pbar and B- -> Sigma_c(2520)0 pbar.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
