Does Micro-CT scanning damage DNA in museum specimens?
X-ray micro-computed tomography and DNA sequencing are useful and increasingly common tools in taxonomy and collections research. Whilst the benefits of each method are continually evaluated and debated individually, how the methods impact each other requires more attention. We compared DNA fragment length and the barcode sequence CO1 in samples throughout a CT-scanning protocol, for a range of X-ray exposures and energies. We found no evidence of DNA damage, but advise caution when using precious or archival material, highlighting the need for further investigations and considering potential areas for research.NatSCA supports open access publication as part of its mission is to promote and support natural science collections. Synthesis of hover autopilots for rotary-wing VTOL aircraft
The practical situation is considered where imperfect information on only a few rotor and fuselage state variables is available. Filters are designed to estimate all the state variables from noisy measurements of fuselage pitch/roll angles and from noisy measurements of both fuselage and rotor pitch/roll angles. The mean square response of the vehicle to a very gusty, random wind is computed using various filter/controllers and is found to be quite satisfactory although, of course, not so good as when one has perfect information (idealized case). The second part of the report considers precision hover over a point on the ground. A vehicle model without rotor dynamics is used and feedback signals in position and integral of position error are added. The mean square response of the vehicle to a very gusty, random wind is computed, assuming perfect information feedback, and is found to be excellent. The integral error feedback gives zero position error for a steady wind, and smaller position error for a random wind

In a recent paper [1] (also at http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/0803.3721), I made
several critical remarks on a 'Hermitian time operator' proposed by Galapon [2]
(also at http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0111061).
Galapon has correctly pointed out that remarks pertaining to 'denseness' of
the commutator domain are wrong [3]. However, the other remarks still apply,
and it is further noted that a given quantum system can be a member of this

Lightweight thermally efficient composite feedlines, preliminary design and evaluation
Six liquid hydrogen feedline design concepts were developed for the cryogenic space tug. The feedlines include composite and all-metal vacuum jacketed and non-vacuum jacketed concepts, and incorporate the latest technology developments in the areas of thermally efficient vacuum jacket end closures and standoffs, radiation shields in the vacuum annulus, thermal coatings, and lightweight dissimilar metal flanged joints. The feedline design concepts were evaluated on the basis of thermal performance, weight, cost, reliability, and reusability. It is shown that composite tubing provides improved thermal performance and reduced weight for each design concept considered. Approximately 12 kg (26 lb.) can be saved by the use of composite tubing for the LH2 feedline and the other propulsion lines in the space tug
Helmet weight simulator
A device for providing acceleration cues to the helmet of a simulator pilot is described. Pulleys are attached to both shoulders of the pilot. A cable is attached to both sides of the helmet and extends through the pulleys to a takeup reel that is controlled by a torque motor. Control signals are applied to a servo system including the torque motor, the takeup reel and a force transducer which supplies the feedback signal. In one embodiment of the invention the force transducer is in the cable and in another it is in the takeup reel
Constructing a Space from the System of Geodesic Equations
Given a space it is easy to obtain the system of geodesic equations on it. In
this paper the inverse problem of reconstructing the space from the geodesic
equations is addressed. A procedure is developed for obtaining the metric
tensor from the Christoffel symbols. The procedure is extended for determining
if a second order quadratically semi-linear system can be expressed as a system
of geodesic equations, provided it has terms only quadratic in the first
derivative apart from the second derivative term. A computer code has been
developed for dealing with larger systems of geodesic equations
