    Promoting Hots and Better Literacy for EFL Students Through the Cognitively Challenging Reading Material

    This literature review presents evidence from the literature which suggests that learning a foreign language in a classroom situation need a major shifting in its teaching and learning process. Memorizing language grammar does not necessarily provide the tools for teaching a person to speak, read, write and think with the target language. Educators need to be aware that language description (the language structures or rules) is not the same with language function (communication and thinking process). Current literature review surveys books and scholarly articles which are relevant to literacy issue by providing description, summary, and critical evaluation of these works in relation to the research problem being investigated. Latest findings from cognitive psychology field stresses that language acquisition can be achieved through cognitively challenging reading material. The students will feel more engagement with reading material which is not specifically design to learn English; they will read a reading material which is relevant to their lives and also interesting from their point of view. The reading material also must be comprehensible to the students. By understanding the content, they will add more layers to their conceptual thinking, and this will hone their High Order Thinking Skill. This work is of great importance to teachers as it demonstrates that teachers would help students become more literate by investing their time in choosing interesting and relevant reading materials.   Keywords: Language, Literacy, Acquisition, Thinking, Readin

    The objective of this research was to get bioinsecticides that efective againts the borer on chickpea in the field. This research was conducted at the Desa Kerapuh Kecamatan Dolok Masihul Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai, from November 2013 until Januari 2014. The research used complete block design nonfactorial with eight treatments and three replications. The treatments were control, Leaf extract of betelvine 100 g/l, leaf extract of soursop 250 g/l, Extract of Derris 50 g/l, Leaf extract of papaya 100 g/l, Bacillus thuringiensis 1ml/l, Beauveria bassiana 10 gr/l and Klorantraniliprol 1 ml/liter. The result showed that kind of bioinsecticide gave different effect to all of parameters. The best bioinsecticide to control M. testulalis was leaf extract of soursop 250 gram/liter

    Nitrocellulose is a polymer used as materials for propellant. Manufacture of nitrocellulose done with cellulose nitration process. Nitration of cellulose is a reaction force substitution or replacement of H+ from –OH- groups in cellulose contained in the NO2+ cluster of nitric acid (HNO3). Cellulose to be used is sourced from waste palm midrib. The purpose of this study is to obtain the best conditions of temperature and time nitration that α- cellulose nitration process to produce nitrocellulose with a high nitrogen content. Palm midrib cellulose purified before entering the nitration process. Stages of the purification process a palm midrib cellulose is extraction, hydrolysis, delignification and purification with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). After the purification process, the next step is the process of nitration of cellulose with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Nitration process is done with the variation of temperature and reaction time. Nitrocellulose nitrogen levels will be analyzed with Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR). The best conditions in the nitration process took 30 minutes with the temperature of 90 oC. Nitrogen levels were estimated on nitrocellulose > 12% so it can be used as raw material for the manufacture of propellants

    Penelitian ini dilakukan di lahan percobaan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Sumatera Utara yang berada ± 25 m dpl mulai Mei sampai Agustus 2015. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui kemampuan pupuk hayati dan tepung cangkang telur dalam meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman kedelai. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan 2 faktor perlakuan. Faktor pertama adalah pemberian pupuk hayati yaitu 0 ; 5 dan 10 g/kg benih dan faktor kedua tepung cangkang telur yaitu 0 ; 25 ; 50 dan 75 g/polibeg. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian pupuk hayati meningkatkan jumlah dan berat bintil akar efektif dan bobot biji kering per tanaman. Sedangkan perlakuan tepung cangkang telur nyata dalam meningkatkan jumlah dan bobot bintil akar efektif. Sedangkan interaksi antara pupuk hayati dan tepung cangkang telur cenderung meningkatkan jumlah dan berat bintil akar efektif dan bobot biji kering per tanama

    This study aims to improve the learning process and improve learning outcomes class X learners of SMKN Negeri 1 Mandau by applying cooperative learning model TPS . The subjects were learners in class X which consisted of 4 women and 30 men with heterogeneous academic ability. This research is a class act with two cycles . Each cycle has four stages : planning, implementation, observation and reflection . Data collection instrument in this study is the observation sheet activities teachers and learners, as well as the achievement test. Sheets were analyzed qualitatively descriptive narrative, while the achievement test were analyzed by descriptive statistical study by analyzing the development of the individual and group values, KKM achievement analysis, and analysis of the success of the action. Results of research on the observation sheet shows the activity of teachers and learners have done well and according to plan after the action . Improvements in the learning process of students and increase the number of learners who achieve KKM at the end of each cycle UH compared to the number of learners who achieve a score of KKM on base score. At the base score only 35,29% of learners who reach KKM , the UH I increased to 58,82% and the UH II also increased to 73,52% . The results of this study indicate that the application of cooperative learning model TPS can improve the learning process and improve learning outcomes class X learners of SMK Negeri 1 Mandau in the second semester of the academic year 2013/2014

    Analysis of Regulation and Policy on Biosafety andLikelihood of Transgenic Seeds Adoption in Indonesia.Edwin S. Saragih, Santun R.P. Sitorus, Harianto, andSugiono Moeljopawiro. Since more than 10 years, anumber of works in field of modern biotechnology havebeen programmed in public research institutes anduniversities in Indonesia and few foreign companies haveput efforts in introducing transgenic varieties. This significantdevelopment raises intriguing question as to why there hasnot been any transgenic food crop seed planted by farmersin the country. A status quo was observed in whichregulatory regime on biosafety has been in a situation ofprolonged transitional phase and necessary institutionalframework has not been firmly in place. There weredistinguished lines among stakeholders on benefitawareness, risks perception and worry on multinationalcompanies\u27 control over seed supply. There is a fairexpectation that similar benefits experienced by adoptingcountries could also help increase food production inIndonesia. However, potential contribution of transgenicseeds for the country is still largely unexplored. There arenumbers of potential transgenic seeds namely transgenicrice, soybean, potato, tomato and corn, with the latter wouldshow slightly better likelihood of success once adoptionhappens. Decision making instrument as determinant factorin ensuring safe application and release of transgenic seedshas not yet existed despite the fact that capacity for biosafetyassessment conduct is undoubtedly sufficient. It is importantto note that the new regulation on biosafety (PP No. 21/2005)open opportunities for assessing transgenic product under atransitional clause. Nonetheless, the new regulation has notbeen able securing food safety statement of importedtransgenic products (especially corn and soybean) whichhave been used for domestic consumption

    Analisis Hasil Pemeriksaan Spesimen Penderita Demam Berdarah Dengue di Jakarta, 1991

    An analytical study was conducted of 885 serum specimens, from 14 different hospitals in Jakarta, that were submitted to Virology Laboratory at Communicable Disease Research Center, NIHRD, Jakarta, for dengue serology examination using HI test, in 1991. Only paired, acute and convalescence specimens, total of 689, fulfilled the criteria for the analysis. The positivity rate of these paired sera was 43,54%, which is slightly lower compared with 50,41 % that was observed in 1990. There was an increase in number of submitted specimens to the laboratory, starting from January, with two peaks in May and June, followed with gradual decline from July through December 1991. No significant difference was observed among sex of patients. The mode of age ofpatients were 5 - 15 years old, however sera from older patients (>= 60 years) were also submitted for examination. Factors which could influence those patterns: age, sex, seasonal variation, etc are discussed in detail in this paper

    A serological study had been conducted on 1329 specimens collected from DHF suspected cases admitted to 18 hospitals in Jakarta during 1990. Analysis of data were done in 978 paired specimens including: sex, age, hospital origin. The clinical diagnosis accuracy for DHF from the whole specimens were 50,41% compared with 70,13% in 1986-1987. Number of DHF cases were fluctuating from January to September 1990 with three peaks in May, July, September. There was no sex difference. Mode of age group of DHF cases were 5-10 year old. There were also DHF cases among older age group (15-20). This finding confirmed the previous report and might be due to Dengue virus virulence differences and decreasing of endemicity
