Electronic structure of AuMg and AgMg ( = Eu, Gd, Yb)
We have investigated the electronic structure of the equiatomic EuAuMg,
GdAuMg, YbAuMg and GdAgMg intermetallics using x-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy. The spectra revealed that the Yb and Eu are divalent while the Gd
is trivalent. The spectral weight in the vicinity of the Fermi level is
dominated by the mix of Mg , Au/Ag and bands, and not by the
. We also found that the Au and Ag bands are extraordinarily
narrow, as if the noble metal atoms were impurities submerged in a low density
metal host. The experimental results were compared with band structure
calculations, and we found good agreement provided that the spin-orbit
interaction in the Au an Ag bands is included and correlation effects in an
open shell are accounted for using the local density approximation +
Hubbard scheme. Nevertheless, limitations of such a mean-field scheme to

Magnetoresistance, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect of equiatomic rare-earth transition-metal magnesium compounds
We present a study of the magnetoresistance, the specific heat and the
magnetocaloric effect of equiatomic Mg intermetallics with , Eu, Gd, Yb and , Au and of GdAuIn. Depending on the
composition these compounds are paramagnetic (, Yb) or they
order either ferro- or antiferromagnetically with transition temperatures
ranging from about 13 to 81 K. All of them are metallic, but the resistivity
varies over 3 orders of magnitude. The magnetic order causes a strong decrease
of the resistivity and around the ordering temperature we find pronounced
magnetoresistance effects. The magnetic ordering also leads to well-defined
anomalies in the specific heat. An analysis of the entropy change leads to the
conclusions that generally the magnetic transition can be described by an
ordering of localized moments arising from the half-filled
shells of Eu or Gd. However, for GdAgMg we find clear evidence
for two phase transitions indicating that the magnetic ordering sets in
partially below about 125 K and is completed via an almost first-order
transition at 39 K. The magnetocaloric effect is weak for the antiferromagnets
and rather pronounced for the ferromagnets for low magnetic fields around the

Electrostatics of Edge States of Quantum Hall Systems with Constrictions: Metal--Insulator Transition Tuned by External Gates
The nature of a metal--insulator transition tuned by external gates in
quantum Hall (QH) systems with point constrictions at integer bulk filling, as
reported in recent experiments of Roddaro et al. [1], is addressed. We are
particularly concerned here with the insulating behavior--the phenomena of
backscattering enhancement induced at high gate voltages. Electrostatics
calculations for QH systems with split gates performed here show that
observations are not a consequence of interedge interactions near the point
contact. We attribute the phenomena of backscattering enhancement to a
splitting of the integer edge into conducting and insulating stripes, which
enable the occurrence of the more relevant backscattering processes of
fractionally charged quasiparticles at the point contact. For the values of the
parameters used in the experiments we find that the conducting channels are
widely separated by the insulating stripes and that their presence alters
significantly the low-energy dynamics of the edges. Interchannel impurity
scattering does not influence strongly the tunneling exponents as they are
found to be irrelevant processes at low energies. Exponents of backscattering
at the point contact are unaffected by interchannel Coulomb interactions since

Porcine and Canine von Willebrand Factor and von Willebrand Disease: Hemostasis, Thrombosis, and Atherosclerosis Studies
Use of animal models of inherited and induced von Willebrand factor (VWF) deficiency continues to advance the knowledge of VWF-related diseases: von Willebrand disease (VWD), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and coronary artery thrombosis. First, in humans, pigs, and dogs, VWF is essential for normal hemostasis; without VWF bleeding events are severe and can be fatal. Second, the ADAMTS13 cleavage site is preserved in all three species suggesting all use this mechanism for normal VWF multimer processing and that all are susceptible to TTP when ADAMTS13 function is reduced. Third, while the role of VWF in atherogenesis is debated, arterial thrombosis complicating atherosclerosis appears to be VWF-dependent. The differences in the VWF gene and protein between humans, pigs, and dogs are relatively few but important to consider in the design of VWF-focused experiments. These homologies and differences are reviewed in detail and their implications for research projects are discussed. The current status of porcine and canine VWD are also reviewed as well as their potential role in future studies of VWF-related disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis
Vector vortex coronagraph: first results in the visible
We report the status of JPL and JDSU ongoing technological developments and contrast results of the vector vortex coronagraph (VVC) made out of liquid crystal polymers (LCP). The first topological charge 4 VVC was tested on the high contrast imaging testbed (HCIT) around 800 nm, under vacuum and with active wavefront control (32x32 Xinetics deformable mirror). We measured the inner working angle or IWA (50% off-axis transmission) at ~ 1.8λ/d. A one-sided dark hole ranging from 3λ/d to 10λ/d was created in polarized light, showing a mean contrast of ~ 2 × 10^(-7) over a 10% bandwidth. This contrast was maintained very close in (3 λ/d) in a reduced 2% bandwidth. These tests begin to demonstrate the potential of the LCP technology in the most demanding application of a space-based telescope dedicated to extrasolar planet characterization. The main limitations were identified as coming from incoherent sources such as multiple reflections, and residual chromaticity. A second generation of improved masks tackling these issues is being manufactured and will be tested on the HCIT in the coming months
Life Skill Development of Youth Participants of the Tennessee 4-H Beef Skillathon
The purpose of this study was to examine youth leadership life skill development among Tennessee beef skillathon participants and determine factors influencing their motivation to participate. Youth perceived the skillathon to have a moderate impact on their leadership life skill development. As a result, we recommend the skillathon continue to be an integral part of the overall livestock program in Tennessee. The reasons for participating in the skillathon mainly focused on testing knowledge, future careers, winning an award, fun, friends, 4-H agent or school-based agricultural education teacher, and personal development. Thus, utilizing both short-term and long-term influences during recruitment may increase skillathon participation. Future research should be conducted on a national level to determine youth leadership life skill development and reasons for participating in the skillathon competition

Advances in the Physical Metallurgy of Uranium and its Alloys
A general survey is presented of information in the uranium alloy field. Emphasis is centered on alpha uranium-rich alloys of special interest as uranium- base fuel element materials. The systems treated include uranium-molybdenum, uranium-silicon, uraniumzirconium, uranium-niobium, and uranium-zirconiumniobium (high uranium compositions). The uraniumfissium alloys are discussed in relation to their projected applications as fast reactor fuels. Equilibrium diagrams, transformation kinetics, and other pertinent data are presented for the uranium plus fissium'' element systems, e.g., uranium-ruthenium, uranium-rhodium, uraninum-palladium, and uraniummolybdenum-ruthenium. The properties covered include constitution phase diagrams, metallographic structure, physical and mechanicaly properties, transformation kinetics, crystallographic structure, thermal cycling, ad irradiation stability (where pertinent). Correlations between microstructure, heat treatment, and dimensional stability are emphasized, with particular reference to the U-2 wt.% Zr, U-5 wt.% Zr, and 1 1/2 wt.% Nb alloys. A discussion of the role of alloying and heattreatment in improving the dimensionaly stability and corrosion resistance of uraaium is presented, and an evaluation is made of the present status in attaining these objectives. Detection of Potential Transit Signals in the First Three Quarters of Kepler Mission Data
We present the results of a search for potential transit signals in the first
three quarters of photometry data acquired by the Kepler Mission. The targets
of the search include 151,722 stars which were observed over the full interval
and an additional 19,132 stars which were observed for only 1 or 2 quarters.
From this set of targets we find a total of 5,392 detections which meet the
Kepler detection criteria: those criteria are periodicity of the signal, an
acceptable signal-to-noise ratio, and a composition test which rejects spurious
detections which contain non-physical combinations of events. The detected
signals are dominated by events with relatively low signal-to-noise ratio and
by events with relatively short periods. The distribution of estimated transit
depths appears to peak in the range between 40 and 100 parts per million, with
a few detections down to fewer than 10 parts per million. The detected signals
are compared to a set of known transit events in the Kepler field of view which
were derived by a different method using a longer data interval; the comparison
shows that the current search correctly identified 88.1% of the known events. A
tabulation of the detected transit signals, examples which illustrate the
analysis and detection process, a discussion of future plans and open,
potentially fruitful, areas of further research are included
