    Multiwavelength observation of a new black hole candidate: EXS 1737.9-2952

    We report a multiwavelength analysis of an unusual high-energy transient: EXS 1737.9-2952. Due to the features this source exhibited in the hard X-ray domain similar to another source in the Galactic center region (1E1740.9 - 2952), and in order to study the molecular gas toward this X-ray source, we performed an observation of the EXS region in 1993 August, using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) located in La Silla (Chilean Andes). We observed a cloud, at the ``forbidden'' velocity of 135 km s^-1, using ^12CO (1-0) transitions, giving a maximum column density of 8 x 10^21 cm^-2. In 1994 we conducted other observations to search for higher density regions inside the cloud, using HCO+ and CS lines, but they were unsuccessful: we concluded that the cloud could be associated with the X-ray source and its mean density is of the order of ~10^3 cm^-3. In 1994 April, we performed a set of observations of the field containing EXS, at 20 cm and 6 cm, using the VLA in its A configuration, and found four possible radio candidates for an association with the EXS X-ray source, one of them (source 3) being extended, exhibiting a head-tail morphology, and a having a thermal spectrum with a spectral index ~ -0.7. We reproduced our observation in 1994 November and December, using the C configuration at 6 cm, in order to investigate on possible variability and extension of these sources and found a marginal indication in the 20 cm image that source 3 may have a weak second component displaced about 15". Nevertheless, this indication is too faint to associate this source definitely with EXS since no significant variation was detected. In addition, during the 1994 November-December observation, two more extended sources were detected but their association with EXS is unlikely. We also analyzed the Einstein/IPC image of the 5 sigma EXS error box which does not exhibit, at the time of the observation, any significant low-energy X-ray counterpart to EXS. A nearby pulsar PSR 1737-30 in the ROSAT catalog is outside this error box. Finally, IRAS maps of the EXS region do not show any IR contribution at the location of the radio sources. We conclude that (1) EXS 1737.9-2952 is a high-energy transient, (2) a persistent counterpart at other wavelengths is not demonstrated, and (3) EXS, when flaring, as well as other GC gamma-ray sources, could possibly contribute to the 511 keV bulge emission

    Murchison Widefield Array and XMM-Newton observations of the Galactic supernova remnant G5.9+3.1

    Aims. In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9 + 3.1. Methods. We present the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9 + 3.1 obtained with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray emission from this remnant. Results. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple power-law relation. The synchrotron radio spectral index of G5.9 + 3.1 is estimated to be 0.42 ± 0.03 and the integrated flux density at 1 GHz to be around 2.7 Jy. Furthermore, we propose that the identified point radio source, located centrally inside the SNR shell, is most probably a compact remnant of the supernova explosion. The shell-like X-ray morphology of G5.9 + 3.1 as revealed by XMM-Newton broadly matches the spatial distribution of the radio emission, where the radio-bright eastern and western rims are also readily detected in the X-ray while the radio-weak northern and southern rims are weak or absent in the X-ray. Extracted MOS1+MOS2+PN spectra from the whole SNR as well as the north, east, and west rims of the SNR are fit successfully with an optically thin thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium with a column density NH ~ 0.80 × 1022 cm−2 and fitted temperatures spanning the range kT ~ 0.14–0.23 keV for all of the regions. The derived electron number densities ne for the whole SNR and the rims are also roughly comparable (ranging from ~0.20f−1∕2 to ~0.40f−1∕2 cm−3, where f is the volume filling factor).     The frequency range below a few tens of MHz is unexplored with high angular resolution due to the opacity of Earth's ionosphere. An interferometer array in space providing arcminute angular resolution images at frequencies of a few MHz would allow a wide range of problems in solar, planetary, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy to be attacked. These include the evolution of solar radio emissions associated with shocks driven by coronal mass ejections and searches for coherent radio emission from supernova remnants and relativistic jets, in addition, it is likely that unexpected objects or emission processes will be discovered by such an instrument, as has always happened when high resolution astronomical observations first become possible in a new region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Astronomical Low Frequency Array (ALFA) mission will consist of 16 identical small satellites forming an aperture synthesis array. The satellites will cover the surface of a spherical region approximate to 100 km in diameter, thus providing good aperture plane coverage in all directions simultaneously. The array will operate in two modes: 1) "snapshot" imaging of strong, rapidly changing sources such as solar radio bursts and 2) long-term aperture synthesis observations for maximum sensitivity, high dynamic range imaging, in both cases a large number of array elements is needed

    Colorectal Endoscopic Stenting Trial (CReST) for obstructing left-sided colorectal cancer: randomized clinical trial

    Background Colorectal cancer often presents with obstruction needing urgent, potentially life-saving decompression. The comparative efficacy and safety of endoluminal stenting versus emergency surgery as initial treatment for such patients is uncertain. Methods Patients with left-sided colonic obstruction and radiological features of carcinoma were randomized to endoluminal stenting using a combined endoscopic/fluoroscopic technique followed by elective surgery 1–4 weeks later, or surgical decompression with or without tumour resection. Treatment allocation was via a central randomization service using a minimization procedure stratified by curative intent, primary tumour site, and severity score (Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation). Co-primary outcome measures were duration of hospital stay and 30-day mortality. Secondary outcomes were stoma formation, stenting completion and complication rates, perioperative morbidity, 6-month survival, 3-year recurrence, resource use, adherence to chemotherapy, and quality of life. Analyses were undertaken by intention to treat. Results Between 23 April 2009 and 22 December 2014, 245 patients from 39 hospitals were randomized. Stenting was attempted in 119 of 123 allocated patients (96.7 per cent), achieving relief of obstruction in 98 of 119 (82.4 per cent). For the 89 per cent treated with curative intent, there were no significant differences in 30-day postoperative mortality (3.6 per cent (4 of 110) versus 5.6 per cent (6 of 107); P = 0.48), or duration of hospital stay (median 19 (i.q.r. 11–34) versus 18 (10–28) days; P = 0.94) between stenting followed by delayed elective surgery and emergency surgery. Among patients undergoing potentially curative treatment, stoma formation occurred less frequently in those allocated to stenting than those allocated to immediate surgery (47 of 99 (47.5 per cent) versus 72 of 106 (67.9 per cent); P = 0.003). There were no significant differences in perioperative morbidity, critical care use, quality of life, 3-year recurrence or mortality between treatment groups. Conclusion Stenting as a bridge to surgery reduces stoma formation without detrimental effects. Registration number: ISRCTN13846816 (http://www.controlled-trials.com)

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical science. © The Author(s) 2019.
