    Kilohertz laser ablation for doping helium nanodroplets

    A new setup for doping helium nanodroplets by means of laser ablation at kilohertz repetition rate is presented. The doping process is characterized and two distinct regimes of laser ablation are identified. The setup is shown to be efficient and stable enough to be used for spectroscopy, as demonstrated on beam-depletion spectra of lithium atoms attached to helium nanodroplets. For the first time, helium droplets are doped with high temperature refractory materials such as titanium and tantalum. Doping with the non-volatile DNA basis Guanine is found to be efficient and a number of oligomers are detected

    The interaction between PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride) and rare gas or para-hydrogen samples is studied by means of laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectroscopy. The comparison between spectra of PTCDA embedded in a neon matrix and spectra attached to large neon clusters shows that these large organic molecules reside on the surface of the clusters when doped by the pick-up technique. PTCDA molecules can adopt different conformations when attached to argon, neon and para-hydrogen clusters which implies that the surface of such clusters has a well-defined structure and has not liquid or fluxional properties. Moreover, a precise analysis of the doping process of these clusters reveals that the mobility of large molecules on the cluster surface is quenched, preventing agglomeration and complex formation

    The phase-space volume of regions of regular or trapped motion, for bounded or scattering systems with two degrees of freedom respectively, displays universal properties. In particular, drastic reductions in the volume (gaps) are observed at specific values of a control parameter. Using the stability resonances we show that they, and not the mean-motion resonances, account for the position of these gaps. For more degrees of freedom, exciting these resonances divides the regions of trapped motion.     Multifocal Stevens-Johnson syndrome after concurrent phenytoin and cranial and thoracic radiation treatment, a case report

    A 46 year old male patient with metastatic prostate cancer developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), initially in three well-demarcated areas on his scalp, chest and back, corresponding to ports of radiation therapy while on phenytoin. The rash spread from these locations and became more generalized and associated with pain and sloughing in the mucous lining of the mouth. There is a documented association between phenytoin administration with concurrent cranial radiation therapy and development of SJS. Erythema multiforme (EM) associated with phenytoin and cranial radiation therapy (EMPACT) is the term that describes this reaction. However, this term may not cover the full spectrum of the disease since it describes EM associated with phenytoin and only cranial radiation therapy. This case report presents evidence that SJS may be induced by radiation to other parts of the body in addition to the cranium while phenytoin is administered concomitantly. With increasing evidence that phenytoin and levetiracetam are equally efficacious for seizure treatment and prophylaxis, and since there is no link identified so far of an association between levetiracetam and SJS, we believe that levetiracetam is a better option for patients who need anticonvulsant medication(s) while undergoing radiation therapy, especially cranial irradiation

    Classifying Reflectance Targets under Ambient Light Conditions using Passive Spectral Measurements

    Collecting remotely sensed spectral data under varying ambient light conditions is challenging. The objective of this study was to test the ability to classify grayscale targets observed by portable spectrometers under varying ambient light conditions. Two sets of spectrometers covering ultraviolet (UV), visible (VIS), and near−infrared (NIR) wavelengths were instrumented using an embedded computer. One set was uncalibrated and used to measure the raw intensity of light reflected from a target. The other set was calibrated and used to measure downwelling irradiance. Three ambient−light compensation methods that successively built upon each other were investigated. The default method used a variable integration time that was determined based on a previous measurement to maximize intensity of the spectral signature (M1). The next method divided the spectral signature by the integration time to normalize the spectrum and reveal relative differences in ambient light intensity (M2). The third method divided the normalized spectrum by the ambient light spectrum on a wavelength basis (M3). Spectral data were classified using a two−step process. First, raw spectral data were preprocessed using a partial least squares (PLS) regression method to compress highly correlated wavelengths and to avoid overfitting. Next, an ensemble of machine learning algorithms was trained, validated, and tested to determine the overall classification accuracy of each algorithm. Results showed that simply maximizing sensitivity led to the best prediction accuracy when classifying known targets.     Numerical analysis of propellers for electric boats using computational fluid dynamics modelling

Generally, the performance characteristics of a marine propeller are determined and analysed by experiments like open water and self-propulsion scale model tests which are costly and timeconsuming at the initial design stage. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to evaluate propeller performance. Three Wageningen B-series propellers with varying Expanded Area Ratios (EAR) were modelled with respect to the design constraints, such as ship speed and rotational velocity. The performance of the hydrodynamic coefficients, thrust, torque and open water efficiency are then analysed using the CFD modelling. These characteristics are then validated against experimental data obtained from the Netherlands Ship Model Basin open water test in Wageningen and used to investigate the flow behaviour. The analysis considers the Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) model. This study provided a well-founded framework for applying CFD in the analysis and selection of Wageningen B-series propellers, as well as investigated the relationship between the EAR, flow behaviour, thrust coefficient, and torque coefficient for electric boats. The results show that a lower thrust and torque coefficient can improve the flow behaviour with increasing the efficiency by up to 62%. Furthermore, the outcomes reveal that the lower expanded area ratio of 0.6 is more suitable for electric boats, creating a larger pressure difference of 1.079 MPa and generating extra potential thrust at the same advance ratio, which leads to greater open water efficiency.Technical University of Libere
