    The association of antiphospholipid antibodies with severe early-onset pre-eclampsia

    Objective. To confirm the association of antiphospholipid antibodies with early onset of severe pre-eclampsia before 30 weeks' gestation.Study design. Thirty-four patients with diastolic blood pressure levels ≥ 110 mmHg and at least 2+ proteinuria before the 30th week of pregnancy were randomly chosen for inclusion in the study. Blood samples were taken for assessment of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACAs), lupus anticoagulant, syphilitic serology and antinuclear antibodies. Fifteen normal antenatal patients matched for age, parity and gestational age acted as control subjects.Results. Four of the 34 women (11,7%) in the study group had elevated levels of both ACAs and lupus anticoagulant, compared with none in the control group. This was not found to be statistically different.Conclusion. Given the low incidence of positive ACAs in early-onset severe pre-eclampsia it is unlikely that they are implicated in its pathogenesis. It is possible that they represent a small subset of patients with alternative or combined pathology

    Endgroup determination of synthetic polymers by electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

    AbstractElectrospray ionization (ESI) was performed on a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer for the endgroup and monomer mass determination of three poly(oxyalkylene)s in the mass range of 400–8000 Da. A combined use of the multiple charge states observed with ESI, leads to a threefold increase in accuracy of the endgroup and monomer determination. The improvement is attributed to the increased number of datapoints used for the regression procedure, yielding more accurate results. Endgroup masses are determined with a mass error better than 5 and 75 millimass units for the molecular weight range of 400–4200 and 6200–8000 Da, respectively. A mass error of better than 1 millimass unit was observed for all monomer mass determinations. With ESI, endgroup and monomer masses have been determined for poly(ethylene glycol) oligomers with a mass higher than 8000 Da. This is almost two times higher than observed with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization on the same instrument

    Are anticardiolipin antibodies responsible for some of the complications of severe acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria?

    What were first called simply false-positive Wassermann reactions and then lupus anticoagulant are now known as antiphospholipid or anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA). These are known to cause a tendency to thrombosis and are frequently present in many neurological conditions and infections. The pathological significance of these antibodies in acute infections, if any, is unknown. We investigated the presence ofthese antibodies in Plasmodium falciparum malaria in an endemic area in Natal/KwaZulu, and attempted to correlate  the presence of this antibody with cerebral manifestations. Immunoglobulin G-anticardiolipin antibodies measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay occurred significantly more frequently in 62 patients with acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria (33,9%) than in 37 control subjects (2,7%) (P < 0,0001). There was no significant difference in the mean parasite loads in those patients who were positive for ACA (1,75%) and those who were negative (1,59%) (P = 0,83). No correlation was found between parasite load and ACA levels in the patient group, or between the number of cerebral manifestations in patients with and without the antibody. The frequency of  splenomegaly was not significantly different in patients with and without ACA (P =0,06). We conclude that there is a high prevalence of ACA in acute falciparum malaria. The pathological significance of this antibody and its relationship to complications, especially cerebral ones, warrant greater attention and may improve the understanding of cerebral malaria and its management

    Testing Hardy nonlocality proof with genuine energy-time entanglement

    We show two experimental realizations of Hardy ladder test of quantum nonlocality using energy-time correlated photons, following the scheme proposed by A. Cabello \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 040401 (2009)]. Unlike, previous energy-time Bell experiments, these tests require precise tailored nonmaximally entangled states. One of them is equivalent to the two-setting two-outcome Bell test requiring a minimum detection efficiency. The reported experiments are still affected by the locality and detection loopholes, but are free of the post-selection loophole of previous energy-time and time-bin Bell tests.Comment: 5 pages, revtex4, 6 figure

    Measuring interactional quality in pre-school settings: Introduction and validation of the Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Wellbeing (SSTEW) scale

    Research increasingly acknowledges the importance of high quality interactions that support and extend children’s thinking. Few measurement tools currently exist, however, to capture this specific aspect of process quality. The Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Wellbeing (SSTEW) scale was developed to assess interactional quality in early childhood education and care, and it includes dimensions of process quality based on developmental theories and practice in effective settings. This study compared ratings on the SSTEW and Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale – Extension (ECERS-E) to consider the impact of varying levels of curricular and interactional quality on child development in 45 Australian pre-school centres; namely the language, numeracy and socio-behavioural development of 669 children at the end of their pre-school year. Results indicated a level of predictive validity for interactional quality ratings as measured by SSTEW which, while related to curricular quality ratings on ECERS-E, differed in associations across domains of child development

    Whole-tree chambers for elevated atmospheric CO<inf>2</inf> experimentation and tree scale flux measurements in south-eastern Australia: The Hawkesbury Forest Experiment

    Resolving ecophysiological processes in elevated atmospheric CO2 (Ca) at scales larger than single leaves poses significant challenges. Here, we describe a field-based experimental system designed to grow trees up to 9m tall in elevated Ca with the capacity to control air temperature and simultaneously measure whole-tree gas exchange. In western Sydney, Australia, we established the Hawkesbury Forest Experiment (HFE) where we built whole-tree chambers (WTC) to measure whole-tree CO2 and water fluxes of an evergreen broadleaf tree, Eucalyptus saligna. A single E. saligna tree was grown from seedling to small tree within each of 12 WTCs; six WTCs were maintained at ambient Ca and six WTCs were maintained at elevated Ca, targeted at ambient Ca +240μmolmol-1. All 12 WTCs were controlled to track ambient outside air temperature (Tair) and air water vapour deficit (Dair). During the experimental period, Tair, Dair and Ca in the WTCs were within 0.5°C, 0.3kPa, and 15μmolmol-1 of the set-points for 90% of the time, respectively. Diurnal responses of whole-tree CO2 and water vapour fluxes are analysed, demonstrating the ability of the tree chamber system to measure rapid environmental responses of these fluxes of entire trees. The light response of CO2 uptake for entire trees showed a clear diurnal hysteresis, attributed to stomatal closure at high Dair. Tree scale CO2 fluxes confirm the hypothesised deleterious effect of chilling night-time temperatures on whole-tree carbon gain in this subtropical Eucalyptus. The whole-tree chamber flux data add an invaluable scale to measurements in both ambient and elevated Ca and allow us to elucidate the mechanisms driving tree productivity responses to elevated Ca in interaction with water availability and temperature. © 2010 Elsevier B.V
