New Spins for ground states and isomers in Pd and Pd
Levels in 115Pd and 117Pd nuclei, populated in the spontaneous fission of 248Cm were studied by means of prompt gamma spectroscopy using the EUROGAM2 array of Anti-Compton spectrometers. Negative-parity, I = 9/2 excitations were identified, which are associated with the long-lived isomers in these nuclei, reported previously as 11/2- excitations. The new data indicate spin and parity 3/2 + for ground states in 115Pd and 117Pd instead of 5/2 + proposed in previous works. This result implicates changes of spin assignments to other levels in both nuclei
Îł decay from states at low excitation energy in the neutron-deficient isotope, 200Rn, identified by correlated radioactive decay
The low-lying level structure of the neutron-deficient isotope 200Rn has been studied using the 176Hf(28Si,4n) reaction at a beam energy of 142 MeV. Evaporation residues were selected using an in-flight recoil mass separator, the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer, and implanted in a double-sided silicon strip detector. Prompt Îł rays in 200Rn were observed at the target position using the AYEBALL array of 19 Compton-suppressed germanium detectors, and were identified by the subsequent radioactive decay of associated recoiling ions in the strip detector. Isotopic assignments of the nuclei produced were made on the basis of the mass-to-charge ratio of the recoiling ion and the energy and half-life of its α decay. Previous results concerning transitions in 202Rn were confirmed. The level scheme deduced for 200Rn, compared with those of heavier radon isotopes, is not consistent with the onset of deformation predicted by theoretical calculations. Population overlap and habitat segregation in wintering Black-tailed Godwits Limosa limosa
Distinct breeding populations of migratory species may overlap both spatially and temporally, but differ in patterns of habitat use. This has important implications for population monitoring and conservation. To quantify the extent to which two distinct breeding populations of a migratory shorebird, the Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa, overlap spatially, temporally and in their use of different habitats during winter. We use mid-winter counts between 1990 and 2001 to identify the most important sites in Iberia for Black-tailed Godwits. Monthly surveys of estuarine mudflats and rice-fields at one major site, the Tejo estuary in Portugal in 2005-2007, together with detailed tracking of colour-ringed individuals, are used to explore patterns of habitat use and segregation of the Icelandic subspecies L. l. islandica and the nominate continental subspecies L. l. limosa. In the period 1990-2001, over 66 000 Black-tailed Godwits were counted on average in Iberia during mid-winter (January), of which 80% occurred at just four sites: Tejo and Sado lower basins in Portugal, and Coto Dontildeana and Ebro Delta in Spain. Icelandic Black-tailed Godwits are present throughout the winter and forage primarily in estuarine habitats. Continental Black-tailed Godwits are present from December to March and primarily use rice-fields. Iberia supports about 30% of the Icelandic population in winter and most of the continental population during spring passage. While the Icelandic population is currently increasing, the continental population is declining rapidly. Although the estuarine habitats used by Icelandic godwits are largely protected as Natura 2000 sites, the habitat segregation means that conservation actions for the decreasing numbers of continental godwits should focus on protection of rice-fields and re-establishment of freshwater wetlands
New neutron-rich nuclei Zr103,104 and the A100 region of deformation
Partial decay schemes in the neutron-rich nuclei Zr103 and Zr104 have been measured for the first time and rotational bands in Zr100 102 have been extended to spins of up to 10Latin small letter h with stroke by observing prompt rays from the spontaneous fisson of Cm248. These nuclei are among the most deformed known at low spin and excitation energy. The level structures in the odd-A nuclei show that the h11/2 intruder orbital plays an important role in stabilizing the deformation in this region
Identical transitions in the strongly deformed Sr-99 and Sr-100
The decay of the very neutron-rich nucleus Rb-100 has been studied by
gamma-spectroscopy of on-line mass-separated samples. Schemes for beta-decay to
Sr-100 and beta-n-decay to Sr-99 are presented. New sets of transitions in
Sr-99 and Sr-100 with identical energies are observed. All identical bands so
far observed in neutron-rich Sr isotopes obey a simple energy rule valid for

Genome-Wide Association Study in BRCA1 Mutation Carriers Identifies Novel Loci Associated with Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk
BRCA1-associated breast and ovarian cancer risks can be modified by common genetic variants. To identify further cancer risk-modifying loci, we performed a multi-stage GWAS of 11,705 BRCA1 carriers (of whom 5,920 were diagnosed with breast and 1,839 were diagnosed with ovarian cancer), with a further replication in an additional sample of 2,646 BRCA1 carriers. We identified a novel breast cancer risk modifier locus at 1q32 for BRCA1 carriers (rs2290854, P = 2.7Ă10-8, HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.20). In addition, we identified two novel ovarian cancer risk modifier loci: 17q21.31 (rs17631303, P = 1.4Ă10-8, HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38) and 4q32.3 (rs4691139, P = 3.4Ă10-8, HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38). The 4q32.3 locus was not associated with ovarian cancer risk in the general population or BRCA2 carriers, suggesting a BRCA1-specific associat

The nuclear structure of neutron-rich isotopes with Z from 38--42
In this report results from a study of the nuclei produced in the spontaneous fission of {sup 248}Cm will be presented. The present paper will concentrate on recent results on neutron-rich Sr, Zr and Mo nuclei with N = 58--64. These isotopes are of particular interest because of the way their shapes change as a function of both proton and neutron number. The basic characteristics of these shape changes have been established for some time by {beta} decay studies of low-spin states. The new data on prompt {gamma} rays extend the knowledge of the behavior of these nuclei quite considerably. The great sensitivity of Ge arrays has lead to the observation of non-yrast bands, providing more detailed information on nuclear structure; the large number of detectors and the geometry of the CLOVER detectors incorporated into EUROGAM II have allowed the measurement of angular correlations and linear polarizations, putting spin and parity assignments on to a firm footing; a further advance in the study of fission fragment spectroscopy is the determination of the lifetimes of yrast states by a new Doppler attenuation technique. These lifetime measurements give new information on the way nuclear shapes change as a function of rotational frequency

Crossings in alternating-parity bands of neutron-rich Ba nuclei
{sup 144}Ba and {sup 146}Ba nuclei produced in the spontaneous fission of {sup 248}Cm have been studied using the EUROGRAM II array. Spins and parities of excited levels have been deduced from triple-{gamma} angular correlation and direction-polarization correlation measurements, which is the first use of these techniques in studies of fission product nuclei. Ground-state, alternating-parity bands have been extended significantly and crossing in these bands has been found in both isotopes.
