    Temporal, spatial, and structural patterns of adult trembling aspen and white spruce mortality in Quebec's boreal forest

    Temporal, spatial, and structural patterns of adult trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) mortality were studied in intact 150-year-old stands in the southwestern boreal forest of Quebec. For both species, mortality decreases (number of dead trees/total number of trees) with distance from the lake edge until 100-150 m, from which point it slightly increases. Strong peaks in mortality were found for 40- to 60-year-old aspen mainly between 1974 and 1992. Such mortality in relatively young aspen is likely related to competition for light from the dominant canopy trees. Also, the recruitment of this young aspen cohort is presumably the result of a stand breakup that occurred when the initial aspen-dominated stand was between 90 and 110 years old. For spruce, strong peaks in mortality were found in 110- to 150-year-old trees and they occurred mainly after 1980. No clear explanation could be found for these peaks, but we suggest that they may be related to senescence or weakening of the trees following the last spruce budworm outbreak. Suppressed and codominant aspen had a much higher mortality ratio than spruce in the same height class, while more surprisingly, no difference in mortality rate was found between dominant trees of the two species. Most spruce trees were found as standing dead, which leads us to reject the hypothesis that windthrow is an important cause of mortality for spruce in our forests

    The Physics of Star Cluster Formation and Evolution

Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. We review recent developments in the field with a focus on theoretical work.Peer reviewe

    Reducing sub-transaction aborts and blocking time within atomic commit protocols

    Composed Web service transactions executed in distributed networks often require an atomic execution. Guaranteeing atomicity in mobile networks involves a lot more challenges than in fixed-wired networks. These challenges mostly concern network failures, e.g. network partitioning and node disconnection, each of which involves the risk of infinite blocking and can lead to a high number of aborts. In this paper, we introduce an extension to existing atomic commit protocols, which decreases the time during which a resource manager that is involved in a web-service is blocked. In addition, our proposal reduces the number of sub-transaction aborts that arise due to message loss or due to conflicting concurrent transactions by distinguishing re-usable and repeatable sub-transactions from aborting sub-transactions

    Channel catfish ovarian fluid differentially enhances blue catfish sperm performance

    For externally fertilizing fishes, interactions between male and female gametes have been shown to have remarkable impacts on sperm performance. Ovarian fluid (OF) and its ability to alter the swimming behavior of fish sperm makes it a determining factor of fertility. With the expansion of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) ♀ × blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) ♂ hybrid aquaculture, it is essential to understand the impacts during fertilization and the magnitude such gametic interactions have on sperm performance and subsequent male fertility potential. This study was conducted to address the following: 1) activate blue catfish sperm with/without channel catfish OF to determine impacts on sperm performance and 2) assess if sperm behave differently when activated in the OF from individual females. Sperm (n = 4 males) were activated without OF (control) and with diluted OF from unique females (n = 6), creating 24 experimental crosses. Sperm motility (%), velocity (VCL), and longevity were analyzed using computer assisted sperm analyses software. With OF incorporated in the activation media, sperm velocity was significantly higher than the control at 10, 20, and 30 s post-activation. OF did not have an impact on motility for any females at 10 s and 20 s post-activation but became significantly higher than the control at 30 s. In all cases, OF treatments greatly increased longevity. Male × female interactions were highly significant, such that motility, velocity, and longevity were dependent on specific male-female pairs. This information shows that OF should be incorporated in aquatic media to simulate natural spawning conditions and accurately assess the fluid mechanics of sperm propulsion for each male. Additionally, there are mechanisms that drive gamete interactions that need to be explored further, which may improve selection of male-female pairs for in-vitro fertilization. On a broad scale, our results also help to shed light on the complexities of fertilization and fish reproduction overall, which may have implications for recruitment variability and recovery strategies of threatened and/or endangered freshwater species
