THE NEW CARISSA SHIPWRECK: AESTHETIC IMPACT ON COASTAL RECREATION

    Get PDF
This paper uses a combination of techniques, including a stated-preference survey, random utility model, visitor count study, and benefits transfer, to estimate the aesthetic impact of the New Carissa shipwreck on coastal recreation. To our knowledge, this is the first study ever conducted on the recreation impacts of a shipwreck.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

The Human Capital “Impact” on E-Business: The Case of Encyclopedia Britannica

[Excerpt] The term “New Economy” has been coined to describe the remarkable economic performance of the 1990s. Stiroh, (1999) an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York observes that its defining characteristic is a “focus on increasing globalization and expanding information technology” (pg. 87). Research suggests that revenues from electronic based business to business trade will double over the next five years from 43billionin1998to43 billion in 1998 to 1.3 trillion in 2003. Revenues from business to consumer trade are predicted to rise from 8billionto8 billion to 108 billion over the same time period (Forrester Research, 1998). However, there is increasing attention to the challenges facing business in the new economy, and an increasing chorus of analysts suggesting how tenuous many of these business models really are. A recent Barron’s article showed that many dot-com companies have only days of remaining cash (Willoughby, March 20, 1999). Such a key emerging phenomenon has not escaped the attention of writers, though the existing body of writing has some important gaps. We would classify existing e-business literature into two groups. First, there is a growing body of literature that discusses the how the Internet is transforming business models and organizational strategies. A second, much smaller body of work has focused on e-HR, or more specifically, the implications of the Internet on various HR practices

When Stock Options Fail to Motivate: Attribution and Context Effects on Stock Price Expectancy

    Get PDF
This study draws on attribution theory and literature from compensation and strategy to investigate executives’ perceptions about their influence over the firm’s stock price. We define stock price expectancy as the extent to which executives feel that they can influence the firm’s stock price. Results from of a survey of 435 U.S. executives suggest that stock price expectancy is related to both attributional and contextual antecedents. Based on these findings we discuss implications for the extension of expectancy theory and the design and administration of incentive systems

The Relationship Between Job Search Objectives and Job Search Behavior

    Get PDF
This research expands the notion of “job search” beyond traditional models of searching for an alternative yet similar job, arguing that motivations for search are varied. Specifically, we investigate whether search objectives associate with use of different search processes. A study of high-level managers found mixed support for the hypotheses

“You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You”: The Use of Job Search for Bargaining Leverage

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to investigate a previously overlooked yet important objective for an employee engaging in job search – seeking alternative employment to obtain leverage against the current employer. We focus specifically on how employees conduct job search to obtain leverage, and then turn to the question of what motivates employees to adopt this objective. Using a sample of high-level managers, our results indicate the leverage-seeking job search predicts both preparatory and active search beyond the more traditional reason for engaging in job search (i.e., to change jobs). However, as expected, leverage-seeking search was a weaker predictor of the job search processes compared to searching to leave and was not significantly related to job satisfaction. Hierarchical level, perceived alternatives, financial independence, and the meaning attached to money significantly predicted leverage-seeking search, while compensation level, equity, and career plateau showed little effect. Implications for practice and future research on job search and employee retention more generally are discussed

A rigorous approach to the magnetic response in disordered systems

This paper is a part of an ongoing study on the diamagnetic behavior of a 3-dimensional quantum gas of non-interacting charged particles subjected to an external uniform magnetic field together with a random electric potential. We prove the existence of an almost-sure non-random thermodynamic limit for the grand-canonical pressure, magnetization and zero- field orbital magnetic susceptibility. We also give an explicit formulation of these thermodynamic limits. Our results cover a wide class of physically relevant random potentials which model not only crystalline disordered solids, but also amorphous solids.Comment: 35 pages. Revised version. In He-like systems the direct decay of the 1s2s 1S0 state to the 1s2 1S0 ground state is "forbidden". The transition 1s2s 1S0¼ 1s2 1S0 by two photons sensitively probes the structure of the complete atomic system. In particular, the shape of the two-photon spectrum is sensitive to it and also reveals for heavy atomic numbers details of relativistic effects in strong central fields. A brief survey on this field of research is given with special emphasis on high nuclear charge Z.U sustavima sličnim He je izravan raspad stanja 1s2s 1S0 u osnovno stanje 1s2 1S0 “zabranjen”.
