An Evaluation of Techniques for Sampling Skin Flora
Three methods of sampling skin bacteria were evaluated to determine whether the large differences observed from adjacent areas of the back were real or due to variability in sampling methods. It was found that in addition to actual differences in the skin flora populations of adjacent areas, there were significant differences in populations obtained by different sampling techniques and significant differences between individuals. Equally high bacterial populations were recovered from skin by the Teflon spatula method and the rayon swab method; however, scrubbing with rayon swabs gave the most consistent results
Hard Burst Emission from the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1900+14
We present evidence for burst emission from SGR 1900+14 with a power-law high
energy spectrum extending beyond 500 keV. Unlike previous detections of high
energy photons during bursts from SGRs, these emissions are not associated with
high-luminosity burst intervals. Not only is the emission hard, but the spectra
are better fit by Band's GRB function rather than by the traditional
optically-thin thermal bremsstrahlung model. We find that the spectral
evolution within these hard events obeys a hardness/intensity anti-correlation.
Temporally, these events are distinct from typical SGR burst emissions in that
they are longer (~ 1 s) and have relatively smooth profiles. Despite a
difference in peak luminosity of > 1E+11 between these bursts from SGR 1900+14
and cosmological GRBs, there are striking temporal and spectral similarities
between the two kinds of bursts, aside from spectral evolution. We outline an
interpretation of these events in the context of the magnetar model.Comment: 11 pages (text and figures), submitted to ApJ Letters, corrected

The Nature of SN 1961V
The nature of SN 1961V has been uncertain. Its peculiar optical light curve
and slow expansion velocity are similar to those of super-outbursts of luminous
blue variables (LBVs), but its nonthermal radio spectral index and declining
radio luminosity are consistent with decades-old supernovae (SNe). We have
obtained Hubble Space Telescope STIS images and spectra of the stars in the
vicinity of SN 1961V, and find Object 7 identified by Filippenko et al. to be
the closest to the optical and radio positions of SN 1961V. Object 7 is the
only point source detected in our STIS spectra and only its H-alpha emission is
detected; it cannot be the SN or its remnant because of the absence of
forbidden lines. While the H-alpha line profile of Object 7 is remarkably
similar to that of eta Car, the blue color (similar to an A2Ib supergiant) and
lack of appreciable variability are unlike known post-outburst LBVs. We have
also obtained Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of SN 1961V at 18
cm. The non-detection of SN 1961V places a lower limit on the size of the
radio-emitting region, 7.6 mas or 0.34 pc, which implies an average expansion
velocity in excess of 4,400 km/s, much higher than the optical expansion
velocity measured in 1961. We conclude the following: (1) A SN occurred in the
vicinity of SN 1961V a few decades ago. (2) If the SN 1961V light maximum
originates from a giant eruption of a massive star, Object 7 is the most
probable candidate for the survivor, but its blue color and lack of significant
variability are different from a post-outburst eta Car. (3) The radio SN and
Object 7 could be physically associated with each other through a binary
system. (4) Object 7 needs to be monitored to determine its nature and

Rehabilitation Therapy in Older Acute Heart Failure Patients (REHAB-HF) trial: Design and rationale.
BACKGROUND: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a leading cause of hospitalization in older persons in the United States. Reduced physical function and frailty are major determinants of adverse outcomes in older patients with hospitalized ADHF. However, these are not addressed by current heart failure (HF) management strategies and there has been little study of exercise training in older, frail HF patients with recent ADHF.
HYPOTHESIS: Targeting physical frailty with a multi-domain structured physical rehabilitation intervention will improve physical function and reduce adverse outcomes among older patients experiencing a HF hospitalization.
STUDY DESIGN: REHAB-HF is a multi-center clinical trial in which 360 patients ≥60 years hospitalized with ADHF will be randomized either to a novel 12-week multi-domain physical rehabilitation intervention or to attention control. The goal of the intervention is to improve balance, mobility, strength and endurance utilizing reproducible, targeted exercises administered by a multi-disciplinary team with specific milestones for progression. The primary study aim is to assess the efficacy of the REHAB-HF intervention on physical function measured by total Short Physical Performance Battery score. The secondary outcome is 6-month all-cause rehospitalization. Additional outcome measures include quality of life and costs.
CONCLUSIONS: REHAB-HF is the first randomized trial of a physical function intervention in older patients with hospitalized ADHF designed to determine if addressing deficits in balance, mobility, strength and endurance improves physical function and reduces rehospitalizations. It will address key evidence gaps concerning the role of physical rehabilitation in the care of older patients, those with ADHF, frailty, and multiple comorbidities
Selective oxidation of allylic alcohols over highly ordered Pd/meso-Al2 O3 catalysts
Highly ordered mesoporous alumina was prepared via evaporation induced self assembly and was impregnated to afford a family of Pd/meso-Al2O3 catalysts for the aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of allylic alcohols under mild reaction conditions. CO chemisorption and XPS identify the presence of highly dispersed (0.9–2 nm) nanoparticles comprising heavily oxidised PdO surfaces, evidencing a strong palladium-alumina interaction. Surface PdO is confirmed as the catalytically active phase responsible for allylic alcohol selox, with initial rates for Pd/meso-Al2O3 far exceeding those achievable for palladium over either amorphous alumina or mesoporous silica supports. Pd/meso-Al2O3 is exceptionally active for the atom efficient selox of diverse allylic alcohols, with activity inversely proportional to alcohol mass
Highly efficient blueish-green fluorescent OLEDs based on AIE liquid crystal molecules : From ingenious molecular design to multifunction materials
In order to seek the balance point between liquid crystallinity and high efficiency emission, two novel aggregation-induced emission-based (AIE) liquid crystal materials of TPE-PBN and TPE-2PBN, which contain a tetraphenylethene derivative as the emission core and a 4-cynobiphenyl moiety as the mesogenic unit, were designed and prepared. Both simple molecules showed a mesophase at high temperature as evidenced by polarised optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD). Simultaneously, TPE-PBN and TPE-2PBN presented clear AIE characteristics in the blueish-green region and achieved a high emission quantum efficiency of 71% and 83% in the solid state, respectively. Due to the self-assembly properties of thermotropic liquid crystals, both compounds showed higher hole mobilities in the annealed films than in pristine films. Employing TPE-PBN and TPE-2PBN as the emitting materials, both non-doped devices and doped devices were fabricated. The TPE-PBN-based doped OLEDs showed a better device performance with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 4.1% which is among the highest EQEs of blue AIE fluorescent OLEDs
A practical scheme for quantum computation with any two-qubit entangling gate
Which gates are universal for quantum computation? Although it is well known
that certain gates on two-level quantum systems (qubits), such as the
controlled-not (CNOT), are universal when assisted by arbitrary one-qubit
gates, it has only recently become clear precisely what class of two-qubit
gates is universal in this sense. Here we present an elementary proof that any
entangling two-qubit gate is universal for quantum computation, when assisted
by one-qubit gates. A proof of this important result for systems of arbitrary
finite dimension has been provided by J. L. and R. Brylinski
[arXiv:quant-ph/0108062, 2001]; however, their proof relies upon a long
argument using advanced mathematics. In contrast, our proof provides a simple
constructive procedure which is close to optimal and experimentally practical
