Developing a Woodlot for Sustainable Use
In this project several species of livestock will be used to develop a raw woodlot into a sustainable farm whose profits will benefit the farm family and the local community. The social normalcies of today allow people to purchase meat from a supermarket never knowing how the animal was raised or treated. Children and young adults are raised in a society that does not understand the hard work and dedication it takes for their food to be grown and processed. Whole animal butchery has become a thing of the past; much of the animal is wasted when sent to commercial slaughterhouses. Livestock can be used for a number of things other than becoming food for consumers. This project will utilize various species of livestock to transform the landscape of an 83 acre plot of land, provide a sustainable business for the farm family, participate in educating the public on the advantages of farm life, and explore ways to use the whole animal
Windows into Non-Euclidean Spaces
Two microlens arrays that are separated by the sum of their focal lengths form arrays of micro-telescopes. Parallel light rays that pass through corresponding lenses remain parallel, but the direction of the transmitted light rays is different. This remains true if corresponding lenses do not share an optical axis (i.e. if the two microlens arrays are shifted with respect to each other). The arrays described above are examples of generalized confocal lenslet arrays, and the light-ray-direction change in these devices is well understood [Oxburgh et al., Opt. Commun. 313, 119 (2014)]. Here we show that such micro-telescope arrays change light-ray direction like the interface between spaces with different metrics. To physicists, the concept of metrics is perhaps most familiar from General Relativity (where it is applied to spacetime, not only space, like it is here) and Transformation Optics [Pendry et al., Science 312, 1780 (2006)], where different materials are treated like spaces with different optical metrics. We illustrate the similarities between micro-telescope arrays and metric interfaces with raytracing simulations. Our results suggest the possibility of realising transformation-optics devices with micro-telescope arrays, which we investigate elsewhere
Exploring the ‘middle ground’ between state and market: the example of China
Studies of housing systems lying in the ‘middle ground’ between state and market are subject to three important shortcomings. First, the widely used Esping-Andersen (EA) approach assesses only a subset of the key housing outcomes and may be less helpful for describing changes in housing policy regimes. Second, there is too much emphasis on tenure transitions, and an assumed close correspondence between tenure labels and effective system functioning may not be valid. Third, due attention has not been given to the spatial dimensions in which housing systems operate, in particular when housing policies have a significant devolved or localised emphasis. Updating EA’s framework, we suggest a preliminary list of housing system indicators in order to capture the nature of the housing systems being developed and devolved. We verified the applicability of this indicator system with the case of China. This illustrates clearly the need for a more nuanced and systematic basis for categorising differences and changes in welfare and housing policies
A practical scheme for quantum computation with any two-qubit entangling gate
Which gates are universal for quantum computation? Although it is well known
that certain gates on two-level quantum systems (qubits), such as the
controlled-not (CNOT), are universal when assisted by arbitrary one-qubit
gates, it has only recently become clear precisely what class of two-qubit
gates is universal in this sense. Here we present an elementary proof that any
entangling two-qubit gate is universal for quantum computation, when assisted
by one-qubit gates. A proof of this important result for systems of arbitrary
finite dimension has been provided by J. L. and R. Brylinski
[arXiv:quant-ph/0108062, 2001]; however, their proof relies upon a long
argument using advanced mathematics. In contrast, our proof provides a simple
constructive procedure which is close to optimal and experimentally practical

An overview of the extratropical storm tracks in CMIP6 historical simulations
The representation of the winter and summer extratropical storm tracks in both hemispheres is evaluated in detail for the available models in the 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The state of the storm tracks from 1979-2014 is compared to that in ERA5 using a Lagrangian objective cyclone tracking algorithm. It is found that the main biases present in the previous generation of models (CMIP5) still persist, albeit to a lesser extent. The equatorward bias around the SH is much reduced and there appears to be some improvement in mean biases with the higher resolution models, such as the zonal tilt of the North Atlantic storm track. Low resolution models have a tendency to under-estimate the frequency of high intensity cyclones with all models simulating a peak intensity that is too low for cyclones in the SH. Explosively developing cyclones are under-estimated across all ocean basins and in both hemispheres. In particular the models struggle to capture the rapid deepening required for these cyclones. For all measures, the CMIP6 models exhibit an overall improvement compared to the previous generation of CMIP5 models. In the NH most improvements can be attributed to increased horizontal resolution, whereas in the SH the impact of resolution is less apparent and any improvements are likely a result of improved model physics

Hemidiaphragmatic paralysis increases postoperative morbidity after a modified Fontan operation
AbstractObjectives: After a Fontan procedure, forward pulmonary blood flow is augmented during inspiration because of negative intrathoracic pressure. Total pulmonary blood flow is higher during inspiration. With hemidiaphragmatic paralysis, inspiratory augmentation of pulmonary flow is lost or diminished. The objective of this study was to compare early postoperative morbidity after the modified Fontan operation in patients with and without hemidiaphragmatic paralysis. Methods: A case-control analysis was performed comparing 10 patients with documented hemidiaphragmatic paralysis against 30 patients without paralysis who were matched for diagnosis, fenestration, and age. The following early postoperative outcomes were assessed: duration of ventilator support, duration of hospital stay, incidence of ascites, prolonged effusions, and readmission. Results: Preoperatively, there were no significant differences between the 2 groups. However, among the postoperative outcomes, the duration of hospital stay (25.4 ± 16.6 days vs 10.8 ± 6.3 days; P =.03), incidence of ascites (70% vs 3%; P ||.001), prolonged pleural effusions (60% vs 13%; P =.007), and readmission (50% vs 7%; P =.007) were significantly greater in patients with hemidiaphragmatic paralysis than in those without hemidiaphragmatic paralysis. Conclusions: Hemidiaphragmatic paralysis after the modified Fontan operation is associated with an increase in early morbidity. Care should be taken to avoid injury to the phrenic nerve. Patients with prolonged effusions should be evaluated for hemidiaphragmatic paralysis.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2001;122:856-6
