Effects of Immigration on Labour Markets and Government Budgets - An Overview

    Get PDF
The paper provides an overview on recent trends of immigration in OECD countries and on the possible effects of immigration on labour markets and government budgets. It also discusses migration policies from an economic point of view. By bringing together a bulk of international literature on labour market and fiscal effects of migration in a systematic way it provides a framework for assessing the economic effects of migration and improving the knowledge base for migration policies.migration, labour markets, fiscal effects of migration

Radtke v. Everett: An Analysis of the Michigan Supreme Court\u27s Rejection of the Reasonable Woman/Victim Standard: Treating Perspectives that are Different as Though they were Exactly Alike

This comment will discuss both the history of sexual harassment and the evolution of the reasonable woman standard in order to illustrate society\u27s progress toward defining appropriate conduct in the work environment. Parts III- IV will present the Radtke court\u27s argument rejecting the reasonable woman standard in favor of the reasonable person standard. Part V invokes feminist theory to critique the premises upon which the Radtke rationale is based

Characteristics of Spinach Chloroplast Envelope, Thylakoid and Stroma Polypeptides as Revealed by Triton X-114 Phase Partition

    Get PDF
Comparison of the SDS-PAGE profiles of the spinach chloroplast stroma, thylakoid and envelope membranes shows that several polypeptides have the same electrophoretic mobility. To simplify these somewhat complex electrophoretic profiles and to verify whether the polypeptides having similar electrophoretic mobility are identical, we used Triton X-114 phase partition to obtain a separation of the polypeptides according to their relative hydrophobicity. The stroma polypeptides partitioned essentially in the aqueous phase. About half of the thylakoid and envelope membrane polypeptides were exclusively recovered in either one of the two phases. Therefore, the phase partitioning of membrane polypeptides proved to be useful, as the organic phase contained true intrinsic polypeptides, while the aqueous phase was composed of peripheral ones and stroma components. Particularly interesting was the release of the RubisCO large subunit known to copurify with the envelope membranes. Additional experimental approaches were used (immunology, proteosynthesis in organello) to further characterize proteins which had apparent ambiguous phase partitioning. Here, we show that Triton X-l 14 is an excellent tool to unmask polypeptides having identical electrophoretic mobility but different behaviour towards this detergent; its use leads to a clarification of the polypeptide SDS-PAGE profiles of chloroplast membrane

    L’instrumentalisation de la religion dans l’Empire ottoman à l’époque de l’expansion européenne (1800-1914)

This article focuses on the use of religion by the Ottoman central power in order to prevent the loss of territories (and populations) from the end of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Especially after the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, the Ottoman ruler and his entourage decided to use his caliphal status in two different directions. On the one hand, the symbolic leadership of the Ummah claimed by the Sultan was mobilized in remote Muslim territories in order to obtain external allies; on the other hand, the Sublime Porte instrumentalized the title of Caliph to make Western powers accept that albeit lost, territories comprising Muslim populations formerly under Ottoman rule would remain under the religious jurisdiction of the Sultan. Implemented from the last decades of the 18th century onwards, this policy has been relatively successful. The various bilateral or multilateral treaties to which the Ottoman government was a party resulted in the establishment of strong and durable ties between Muslims of regions that were previously part of the Ottoman Empire, such as Greece, Bulgaria, Bosnia or Crimea.

Enriching health-professional programs in global health: Development and implementation of an interdisciplinary and integrated approach

    Get PDF
Background: Globalization results in a rapidly diversifying population, increased inequities, and more complex health problems affecting populations. This forces medical schools to integrate global health (GH) into the training of health-care professionals from curriculum development to practical learning activities, here and abroad.Approach: The approach aims at enriching existing programs in GH competencies in an interdisciplinary context. The goal is to ensure that all health-science students develop a certain level of GH competency. The main actions are the mobilization of key stakeholders, the development of a competency framework (CF) to perform gap analysis, tool formalization, and monitoring and evaluation activities. Subsequent to scoping review and stakeholder consultations, ten principles are identified and used to guide the enrichment process. Results: Actual outputs cover a broad scope, from key decision-makers’ support and endorsement to the formalization of tools and the consolidation and creation of activities such as service-learning activities, rotations among underserved populations, and training for international rotations. Conclusion: While this unique approach is proving to be a major challenge, the preliminary results are well worth the effort. The project’s tangible impacts on health-sciences teaching, the GH competence of graduates, and care delivery are topics of interest for future investigation
