Coalgebraic Trace Semantics for Continuous Probabilistic Transition Systems
Coalgebras in a Kleisli category yield a generic definition of trace
semantics for various types of labelled transition systems. In this paper we
apply this generic theory to generative probabilistic transition systems, short
PTS, with arbitrary (possibly uncountable) state spaces. We consider the
sub-probability monad and the probability monad (Giry monad) on the category of
measurable spaces and measurable functions. Our main contribution is that the
existence of a final coalgebra in the Kleisli category of these monads is
closely connected to the measure-theoretic extension theorem for sigma-finite
pre-measures. In fact, we obtain a practical definition of the trace measure
for both finite and infinite traces of PTS that subsumes a well-known result
for discrete probabilistic transition systems. Finally we consider two example
systems with uncountable state spaces and apply our theory to calculate their
trace measures
Moore and more and symmetry
In any spatially discrete model of pedestrian motion which uses a regular
lattice as basis, there is the question of how the symmetry between the
different directions of motion can be restored as far as possible but with
limited computational effort. This question is equivalent to the question ''How
important is the orientation of the axis of discretization for the result of
the simulation?'' An optimization in terms of symmetry can be combined with the
implementation of higher and heterogeniously distributed walking speeds by
representing different walking speeds via different amounts of cells an agent
may move during one round. Therefore all different possible neighborhoods for
speeds up to v = 10 (cells per round) will be examined for the amount of
deviation from radial symmetry. Simple criteria will be stated which will allow
find an optimal neighborhood for each speed. It will be shown that following
these criteria even the best mixture of steps in Moore and von Neumann
neighborhoods is unable to reproduce the optimal neighborhood for a speed as
low as 4.Comment: Proceedings contribution in N. Waldau et al. (editors) "Pedestrian

Overview of East Asian studies in Central and Eastern Europe
The following volume reports the findings of an extensive survey about research in the field of East Asian Studies by scholars in central and eastern Europe. The purpose, methodology and major findings of this investigation are presented in the introduction to the report. Organised into two main parts, the report presents the results of four country visits by Duisburg scholars to eastern and central European institutes involved in research on East Asia and an extensive listing of institutes, scholars and research. Two indexes to the study improve its usability in locating scholars and institutes by East Asian country and disciplinary focus. --East Asian studies institutions, research, education,Eastern Europe,Central Europe
What Counts as ‘World Class’? : Global University Rankings and Shifts in Institutional Strategies
Global university rankings have emerged as a benchmark of institutional success, setting standards for higher education policymaking and institutional practices. Nevertheless, only a marginal share of higher education institutions (HEI) are in a realistic position to be ranked as a ‘world-class’ institutions. In the European context, the global rankings have been used to highlight a performance gap between European and North American institutions. Here the focus has been on the HEIs in the top-100 positions, causing concerns over European higher education. This has also become a marker of world-class university. We analyze the strategies of 27 Northern European universities in different tiers to learn how they have adjusted to the reality of ranking. We conclude that the references to global rankings have increased between 2014 and 2018. At the same time, the references to rankings have become more implicit in nature. Nevertheless, we find that the discourse of global comparison and excellence has become more common in the strategies. There are also emerging references to the regional role of universities, which are apparent in the strategies of universities that are clearly outside the top-100 ranked institutions. However, this is also a reflection of the discourse of world-class university.Peer reviewe

Ultrafast X-ray Studies of Structural Dynamics at SLAC
The melting dynamics of laser excited InSb have been studied with femtosecond x-ray diffraction. These measurements demonstrate that the initial stage of crystal disordering results from inertial motion on a laser softened potential energy surface. These inertial dynamics dominate for the first half picosecond following laser excitation, indicating that interatomic forces minimally influence atomic excursions from the equilibrium lattice positions, even for motions in excess of an {angstrom}. This also indicates that the atoms disorder initially without losing memory of their lattice reference

Kinematische Analyse eines Parallelmechanismus zur automatisierten Bildgebung von Organ-on-a-Chip Kulturen
Organ-on-a-Chip approach makes it possible to produce vascularized organoids for pre-clinical drug studies using incubators and rockers. Automation of organoids generation is desirable to reduce human resources and increase reproducibility. However, automation requires information such as the growth status of the organoids to be recorded directly within the incubator. Hereby, avoiding regular incubator opening by including an autonomous planar parallel robotic imaging system will prevent disturbing the organoids’ growth. To avoid rotations of the miniature microscope while inspecting the different organoids-on-a-chip in the constrained incubator space, the parallel robot is constrained to two translational DoFs. Here, we present the kinematic design of the robot that fulfils the workspace requirements and space constraints inside the incubator
