The development of emergent writing and the factors which support writing were studied. Five ways that teachers support emergent writing in the classroom were identified and used as the foundation for the developed activities in this project. The activities were designed by the author for use in kindergarten and can be adapted to fit other primary levels. Recommendations for supporting emergent writing in classrooms were given. ii

    EVALUATING ECOLOGICAL STUDIES IN EPIDEMIOLOGY

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research was twofold. The first objective was to assess the quality of modern cross-sectional ecological studies with a bibliometric review. The second objective was to investigate via simulation study the reliability of common ecological regression models for analysing count data. The bibliometric review found that the quality and areas of application of the ecological literature is quite diverse. However, a large proportion of studies exhibited poor statistical practice and provided insufficient amounts of justification and information. Linear, weighted linear, Poisson, and negative binomial regression were included in the simulation study based on their prevalence in the bibliometric review. The Poisson and negative binomial models had overly-liberal Type I error rates when faced with overdispersion or small samples respectively. Linear and weighted linear regression had highly robust Type I error rates. For all models, power decreased primarily as a function of overdispersion

“All the Being and the Doing”: Time and the Role of the Artist in Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway

This project considers the creation of meaning within the context of Virginia Woolf’s two novels, Mrs. Dalloway and To The Lighthouse. The artist appears in many different forms, as a painter and as a mother figure in both of the novels, raising the question, does one encounter meaning to exist in the world, or does one make it? This I attempt to answer through a consideration of time, the process of mourning, and the specific function of mimesis within Woolf’s prose

Assessing the Costs and Benefits of Principal Time Usage and Ohio\u27s EdChoice Scholarship

This study explored the experience of Catholic school principals in Ohio whose schools have participated in the EdChoice Scholarship program. The researcher employed the lens of principal time usage to examine the experiences of Ohio Catholic school principals with EdChoice, with a focus on the direct experiences of principals participating in the program, the principal’s role in the supervisory aspects of operating the program at a school, and on the connections between workload and principal perceptions of the EdChoice program. The research questions were explored through semi-structured interviews with eight Catholic school principals and three administrative designees at those schools. The study concluded that no significant and direct administrative burden was created by the program on the study participants, but that secondary effects are present, such as the potential need for the hiring of a staff member to manage the program and the importance of communication with stakeholders. Additionally, this study illustrated the need for Catholic school principals to remain aware of and engaged in the legislative process in Ohio, as changes made by the government can have a direct effect on the operation of a school
