Possible origin of Triticum petropavlovskyi based on cytological analyses of crosses between T. petropavlovskyi and tetraploid, hexaploid, and synthetic hexaploid (SHW-DPW) wheat accessions
Intraspecific hybridization between Triticum petropavlovskyi Udacz. et Migusch., synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW-DPW), and tetraploid and hexaploid wheat, was performed to collect data on seed set, fertility of F1 hybrid, and meiotic pairing configuration, aiming to evaluate the possible origin of T. petropavlovskyi. Our data showed that (1) seed set of crosses T. petropavlovskyi × T. polonicum and T. petropavlovskyi × T. aestivum cv. Chinese Spring was significantly high; (2) fertility of hybrids T. petropavlovskyi × T. polonicum and T. petropavlovskyi × T. aestivum ssp. yunnanense was higher than that of the other hybrids; (3) fertility of F1 hybrids SHW-DPW × T. dicoccoides and SHW-DPW×T. aestivum ssp. tibetanum was significantly high; and (4) c-value of T. petropavlovskyi × T. polonicum and T. petropavlovskyi × T. aestivum cv. Changning white wheat was also significantly high. The results indicate that the probable origin of T. petropavlovskyi is divergence from a natural cross between T. aestivum and T. polonicum, via either spontaneous introgression or breeding effort

An Essential Role of N-Terminal Arginylation in Cardiovascular Development
The enzymatic conjugation of arginine to the N-termini of proteins is a part of the ubiquitin-dependent N-end rule pathway of protein degradation. In mammals, three N-terminal residues—aspartate, glutamate, and cysteine—are substrates for arginylation. The mouseATE1 gene encodes a family of Arg-tRNA-protein transferases (R-transferases) that mediate N-terminal arginylation. We constructed ATE1-lacking mouse strains and found thatATE1 −/− embryos die with defects in heart development and in angiogenic remodeling of the early vascular plexus. Through biochemical analyses, we show that N-terminal cysteine, in contrast to N-terminal aspartate and glutamate, is oxidized before its arginylation by R-transferase, suggesting that the arginylation branch of the N-end rule pathway functions as an oxygen sensor

Anticorrosion Properties of Nano Anatase TiO(2) Films Derived from Sol-Gel and Hydrothermal Crystallization
Nano TiO(2) films were applied to the surface of stainless steel ( SS) by sol-gel and hydrothermal crystallization using Ti(O(CH(2))(3)CH(3))(4) as a precursor. The properties of the TiO(2) films were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The corrosion performance of the TiO(2) films was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy ( EIS) and polarization measurements. Anatase TiO(2) films prepared by hydrothermal crystallization at 170 degrees C showed similar crystallization to those prepared by conventional calcination at 450 degrees C. The TiO(2) prepared by the two methods were, however, obviously different from the surface structure and the material prepared by hydrothermal crystallization showed better anticorrosion performance in 3.5% (w) NaCl solution compared with the material prepared by calcination.National Natural Science Foundation of China[50571085, 20773100, 21003089]; National High Technology Research and Development Program of China[2009AA03Z327
Intensity-modulated Radiation Therapy Versus Para-aortic Field Radiotherapy to Treat Para-aortic Lymph Node Metastasis in Cervical Cancer: Prospective Study
Aim To compare dosimetry, efficacy, and toxicity of intensity-
modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with para-aortic
field radiotherapy in patients with para-aortic lymph node
(PALN) metastasis of cervical cancer.
Methods This prospective study examined 60 patients
with cervical cancer with PALN metastasis who underwent
whole-pelvis radiotherapy followed by brachytherapy between
November 1, 2004 and May 31, 2008. After 3 cycles
of chemotherapy, patients were serially allocated into two
groups and treated with IMRT or para-aortic field RT at
doses of 58-68 Gy and 45-50 Gy, respectively. Treatment
response was evaluated and toxicities were assessed. Patients
in the IMRT group were treated with both para-aortic
field RT and IMRT in order to compare the exposure dose
of organs at risk.
Results In the IMRT group, the mean dose delivered to the
planning target volume was 67.5 Gy. At least 99% of the
gross tumor volume received effective coverage and radical
dose (median, 63.5 Gy; range, 54.5-66) during treatment.
IMRT plans yielded better dose conformity to the target
and better sparing of the spinal cord and small intestine
than para-aortic field RT. The IMRT patients experienced
less acute and chronic toxicities. The IMRT group also had
higher 2- and 3-year survival rates than the para-aortic RT
group (2-year, 58.8% vs 25.0%, P = 0.019; 3-year, 36.4% vs
15.6%, P = 0.016). However, no significant difference was
found in 1-year survival (67.7% vs 51.3%, P =0.201). The median
survival in the IMRT group was 25 months (range, 3 to
37 months). The actuarial overall survival, disease-free survival,
and locoregional control rates at 2 years were 67%,
77%, and 88%, respectively, in the IMRT group.
Conclusions IMRT provides better clinical outcomes than
para-aortic field radiotherapy in patients with PALN metastasis.
However, cervical local and distal recurrence remain a
problem. Long-term follow-up and studies involving more
patients are needed to confirm our results
Fabrication and photoelectrochemical properties of ZnS/Au/TiO2 nanotube array films
National Natural Science Foundation of China [21173177, 21073151, 21021002]A highly ordered TiO2 nanotube array film was fabricated by an anodic oxidation method. The film was modified by Au nanoparticles (NPs) formed by a deposition-precipitation technique and was covered with a thin ZnS shell prepared by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared ZnS/Au/TiO2 composite film were evaluated by incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE), and photopotential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements under white light illumination. The results indicated that the Au NPs could expand the light sensitivity range of the film and suppress the electron-hole recombination, and the ZnS shell could inhibit the leakage of photogenerated electrons from the surface of Au NPs to the ZnS/electrolyte interface. When the 403 stainless steel in a 0.5 M NaCl solution was coupled to the ZnS/Au/TiO2 nanotube film photoanode under illumination, its potential decreased by 400 mV, showing that the composite film had a better photocathodic protection effect on the steel than that of a pure TiO2 nanotube film
Photoelectrocatalytic Property of Titanium Based TiO2 Nanotube Array Electrode
TiO2 nanotube arrays were prepared by the electrochemical anodization on pure Ti surfaces, and their photoelectrochemical activity was examined. The photoelectrocatalytic property of Ti/TiO2 electrode was evaluated by the degradation of phenol aqueous solution and compared with its photocatalytic performance. The results demonstrated that the photoelectrocatalytic degradation rate of phenol solution for Ti/TiO2 electrode was higher than its photocatalytic degradation rate. The highest photoelectrocatalytic level could be achieved when the bias potential of 0.6 V was applied on the Ti/TiO2 electrode. The results of EIS analyses revealed that the surface reaction step was the only rate limiting step either for the photocatalytic process or for the photoelectrocatalytic process. The extra bias potential could decrease the values of the electron-transfer resistance and increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs
Coexpression of VEGF-C and COX-2 and its association with lymphangiogenesis in human breast cancer

Abstract

Background

Lymphangiogenesis has become a new research frontier in tumor metastasis since the discovery of reliable lymphatic markers that have allowed observation and isolation of lymphatic endothelium. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been reported to be involved in the critical steps in carcinogenesis. However, possible role of COX-2 in lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis is still poorly understood. In present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) and COX-2 in human breast cancer, and correlations with lymphangiogenesis and prognosis.

Methods

Tissue samples of primary tumors from 70 patients undergoing intentionally curative surgical resections for breast cancer were immunohistochemically examined for VEGF-C, COX-2, and D2-40 expressions. The association between COX-2 and VEGF-C expressions and clinicopathological parameters as well as prognosis were analysised. To demonstrate the presence of proliferating lymphatic endothelial cells, 10 random cases with high LVD counts were selected for D2-40/Ki-67 double immunostaining.

Results

A significant correlation was found between the expression of VEGF-C and COX-2 (<it>r </it>= 0.529, <it>P </it>< 0.001), and both elevated VEGF-C expression and elevated COX-2 expression were associated with higher lymph vessel density (LVD), lymph node metastasis and D2-40 positive lymphatic invasion (LVI) as well as worse disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in a univariate analysis. In the double immunostain for the lymph vessel marker D2-40 and the proliferation marker Ki-67, the results confirmed Ki-67-positive nuclei in a proportion of lymph vessel endothelial cells.

Conclusion

There is indeed lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer, the most compelling evidence being the presence of proliferating lymphatic endothelial cells. VEGF-C and COX-2 are coexpressed and significantly associated with lymphangiogenesis and prognosis in invasive breast cancer. Suggesting COX-2 may up-regulate VEGF-C expression and thus promote lymph node metastasis via lymphangiogenesis pathway in human breast cancer.</p
Antiviral Therapy and Outcomes of Patients with Pneumonia Caused by Influenza A Pandemic (H1N1) Virus
There is limited data on the clinical outcome of patients with pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) pneumonia who received oseltamivir treatment, especially when the treatment was administered more than 48 hours after symptom onset.During the pandemic in 2009, a cohort of pH1N1 influenza pneumonia was built in China, and their clinical information was collected systematically, and analyzed with Cox models.<200, oseltamivir administration reduced the mortality risk by 92.1%, 88% and 83.5%, respectively. Higher doses of oseltamivir (>3.8 mg/kg/d) did not improve clinical outcome (mortality, higher dose 2.5% vs standard dose 2.8%, p>0.05).<200
