Suid-Afrika benodig 'n Christelike alternatief op Marxisme en Neo-Marxisme

In this opening paper of the Conference commemorating 50 years of the existence of KOERS the chairman places KOERS in perspective. He looks back to two generations of work done by Calvinist scholars and comes to the conclusion that an era representing a certain trend of thought has been brought to a close. Up to now KOERS has been a prophet and has had a function to fulfil as such. For the future, he warns that we should not in utopian fervour expect everything beautiful of our Calvinist conceptions. KOERS has entered a new phase of existence and we cannot end the critical dialogue with Marxism and Neo-Marxism with the placid observation that Marxism is by definition atheistic and humanisitic and materialistic. In the present situation what is needed is not a hypocritical enlightenment versus an elitist post-enlightened attitude - we should rather strive to begin our renewals and self-criticism with a look at blessings and grace, which constitute the basis of life, and then employ humility, consideration, self-discipline, gratitude and love of the neighbour in creating a new lifestyle in which we can work toward peaceful co-existence in this country. Christian principles cannot be allowed to remain hanging in the sky but should be incarnated into daily attitudes and responses. A Christian alternative to wrong conditions means to make Marxism and Neo-Marxism redundant and barren in this country, and to fulfil our calling in God's world

The issue about whether Philosophy has become redundant in our time constitutes one of the initial or beginning issues in Philosophy. Philosophy, which is, broadly speaking, one of the humanities, is not and may not be a product of socio-economic relations. When these disciplines concede that they have become encapsulated in the existing order and that therefore they wish to continue the status quo without a dynamic revision and reformation, they deserve to be declared redundant. Die posisie van Studium Universale (as interdissiplinêre kursus) aan die Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys is in sekere opsigte uniek in die Westerse universitêre wêreld. Ons beoog hier geen vergelyking tussen Studium Universale aan die P.U. vir C.H.O. en sy eweknie aan sê maar die deursnee Europese universiteit nie. Ons praat baie makliker van ons er- varing van en herinnering aan die Smutsregering en die Tweede Wêreldoorlog wat 32 jaar gelede geëindig het. Maar ons voer vol- struispolitiek oor die jaar 2000 wat maar 23 jaar om die draai lê. Oor 23 jaar is die huidige geslag studente so oud soos baie van ons huidige personeel.

Wetenskap op weg na 'n nuwe identiteit en samewerking

A traditional approach in Calvinist philosophy is to start with an analysis of cosmic diversity in order to find the identity of a particular phenomenon, and then to end with an account of the inter-relatedness between the phenomenon and other things. Although Stoker's philosophy tries to keep a balance between diversity and coherence as an entrée to reality - his later publications reflected a remarkable shift hy emphasising the coherence and contextual meaning of things. Taking the coherence and contextual meaning of things as the point of departure, this article explores a converse version of the traditional approach by using coherence (and not identity) as a means to sound out some new meanings of science and scientific co-operation. An indication of transdisciplinary co-operation is rendered in terms of the preponderance of reality‘s call upon man to be known and cared for. The article ends with a few examples of unusual concepts that may serve as a revised index to identify world-friendly and humane scientific activities
