Complexity and complicity in mobile telecommunications : the effect of network externalities and isomorphic strategy

    Get PDF
The new information economy acts as a microcosm where the dynamics of complexity are present through the pervasive effects of increasing returns. Network externalities are the ubiquitous force behind winner-takes-all scenarios where only the strongest firms survive. The effect is evident in cases such as Microsoft's quasi-monopoly and eBay's dominance of the consumer and small business auctions market. Interestingly however, many important industries exhibiting strong network externalities, have emerged with no dominant winner and the competitive environment is preserved. This empirical study of the UK mobile telecom industry, which tracks an 18-year history of the mobile network operators as well as the strategies and product diffusion patterns of the networks, found firms counteracting winner-takes-all forces. Results indicate the presence of complex adaptive behavior between competing firms. Strategies are reconfigured to ensure the collective survival of all operators in the industry. The probability that one firm will dominate and that the rest will fail is eliminated. A complex set of isomorphic strategies emerges at the levels of network platforms, technical standards and consumer platforms. Through strategic herding, network externalities are exploited to act for the benefit of the whole industry causing competitors' market shares to converge dramatically to equal levels.peer-reviewe

The corporate governance reporting in the European Union

    Get PDF
The latest European Union’s (EU) guiding policies are encouraging big businesses and state-owned organisations to disclose their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance. Many European member states have transposed the EU’s directive 2014/95/EU on non-financial reporting. This directive has presented a significant step forward toward the as its “comply or explain” approach has encouraged organisations to disclose a true and fair view on their organisations’ financial and ESG capitals. Hence, this paper makes specific reference to some of the corporations’ best practices as it identifies areas for improvement in corporate governance issues. It explains how three major European banks are following the recommendations of their national regulatory institution, as they have reviewed the roles and responsibilities of the corporate boards and management. In many cases, they have anticipated the regulatory, legal, contractual, social and market-driven obligations. This contribution contends that there are significant implications for financial services corporations who intend following the right path toward responsible corporate governance and ethical behaviours.peer-reviewe

Technological and infrastructural prerequisites for the deployment of the first shared Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Test Project in Malta

    Get PDF
Automated vehicles are leading to a significant revolution in road transportation systems, with extensive challenges to mobility through several factors, including economic, legal, social, psychological, and technological aspects. Various countries around Europe have tested and piloted autonomous vehicles on their roads and subsequently published research on their approach towards reaching such goals and also on findings from their various projects. However smaller peripheral countries tend to fall behind, whenever innovative technologies are being researched and tested. Research on Malta’s level of preparedness for the introduction of autonomous vehicles is limited. This research project deals with an analysis of the expected impacts of shared autonomous vehicles on the physical and digital road infrastructures and assesses the current infrastructure preparedness on a local scale. The project aims to provide Malta with a new mobility solution, that is sustainable and technologically advanced, that will at the same time increase the users’ choices of alternative transport. Through various meetings and consultations with local stakeholders, it emerges that Malta is still in the very initial planning stages for the introduction of Autonomous Vehicles and that an immediate intervention on Malta’s current physical and digital infrastructure is required to enable the actual implementation of shared autonomous mobility field testing. The outcomes of this research project include a roadmap and recommendations to local authorities, which shall pave the way for the first shared autonomous shuttle pilot project to take place on Maltese roads. This research work forms part of Project MISAM financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology, for and on behalf of the Foundation for Science and Technology, through the FUSION: R&I Research Excellence Programme’. The authors would also like to thank Infrastructure Malta and Debono Group, the collaborators on this project.peer-reviewe

The performance management and appraisal in higher education

    Get PDF
The performance appraisal (PA) is one of the performance management tools that is widely used to measure the productivity of academic employees in different contexts. Therefore, this paper has two main objectives. Firstly, it critically reviews the extant literature on performance management, including; Kaplan and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard Approach, among others. Secondly, it presents a qualitative research that explores the performance appraisal system in a higher education institution. The researcher has conducted semi-structured interview sessions with academic employees to analyse their opinions and perceptions toward their annual PA. The research participants revealed the costs and benefits of their PA exercise. They were aware that their educational leaders could pragmatically employ the PA’s metrics to improve their performance outcomes, in terms of stakeholder engagement, internal processes, organisational capacity and innovation, among other areas. This research implies that the PA instrument could lead to significant benefits for both the institution as well as for the personal development of individual academics.peer-reviewe
