    Using the online cross-entropy method to learn relational policies for playing different games

    By defining a video-game environment as a collection of objects, relations, actions and rewards, the relational reinforcement learning algorithm presented in this paper generates and optimises a set of concise, human-readable relational rules for achieving maximal reward. Rule learning is achieved using a combination of incremental specialisation of rules and a modified online cross-entropy method, which dynamically adjusts the rate of learning as the agent progresses. The algorithm is tested on the Ms. Pac-Man and Mario environments, with results indicating the agent learns an effective policy for acting within each environment

    Los cementos basados en fosfatos de calcio ofrecen una excelente biocompatibilidad y capacidad para promover el crecimiento óseo, por lo cual son de interés en odontología y ortopedia. El presente trabajo ha conducido hasta la fecha a al elaboración de mas de 500 nuevas formulaciones de cementos de fosfatos de calcio, para las cuales se han medido parámetros tales como tiempo de fraguado y resistencia mecánica. De entre dichas formulaciones se están optimizando las que parece ofrecen mejores posibilidades. En particular se está estudiando el efecto sobre la resistencia mecánica de variables como el tamaño de partícula de los materiales de partida, porcentaje de semillas, contenido de agua, y porosidad de los sólidos resultantes

    Apoptosis induction and micronuclei formation were compared following cytotoxic treatments in two rat glioma differing in p53 integrity. In vitro, micronuclei emergence but not apoptosis was linked to the p53 mutated status.     First validation study of the living with long term conditions scale (LwLTCs) among English-speaking population living with Parkinson's disease

    INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, affecting 10 million people worldwide. Health and social care professionals need to have personalised tools to evaluate the process of living with Parkinson's disease and consequently, plan individualised and targeted interventions. Recently, the English version of the Living with Long term conditions (LwLTCs) scale has been developed filling an important gap related to person-centred tools to evaluate the process of living with long term conditions among English-speaking population. However, no validation studies for testing its psychometric properties have been conducted. AIM: To analyse the psychometric properties of the LwLTCs scale in a wide English-speaking population living with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Validation study, with an observational and cross-sectional design. The sample was composed of individuals living with Parkinson's disease from non-NHS services in the community. Psychometric properties including feasibility and acceptability, internal consistency, reproducibility, and construct, internal and known-groups validity were tested. RESULTS: A total sample of 241 people living with Parkinson's disease were included. 6 individuals did not complete 1 or 2 items on the scale. Ordinal alpha was 0.89 for the total scale. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the total scale was 0.88. The LwLTCs scale is strongly correlated with scales measuring satisfaction with life (rs=0.67), quality of life (rs=0.54), and moderately correlated with social support (rs=0.45). Statistically significant difference just for therapy and co-morbidity, yet no for gender, employment situation, or lifestyle changes. CONCLUSIONS: The LwLTCs scale is a valid scale to evaluate how the person is living with Parkinson's disease. Future validation studies to prove the repeatability of the total scale and particularly, domains 3-Self-management, and 4-Integration and internal consistency will be needed. Developing further studies on the English version of the LwLTC in people with other long term conditions is also proposed

    Estudio de un cemento bioactivo de hidroxiapatita como material de substitución ósea

    La cirugía ortopédica y máxilo-facial necesita realizar en muchas ocasiones resecciones masivas de tejido óseo. Esto ha hecho que se haya propuesto la utilización de materiales inertes como substitutos óseos, gracias a la habilidad que tienen de permitir la regeneración del hueso, tanto en el campo de la medicina como en el de la odontología. Nuestro trabajo tiene por objetivo estudiar un biomaterial compuesto de hidroxiapatita y dicalcio-fosfato (hidroxiapatita deficiente en calcio) como material de substitución ósea, en forma de cemento bioactivo. Se han intervenido 75 animales de experimentación (conejo Albino de Nueva Zelanda), divididos en dos grupos, cada uno de ellos compuesto por 25 animales. En el grupo I o control, los animales fueron intervenidos quirúrgicamente realizándoseles una cavidad a nivel metáfisodiafisario en el fémur sin realizar implantes. A los animales del grupo II se les realizó la misma intervención, pero se les implantó un cilindro fraguado de hidroxiapatita deficiente en calcio.Peer Reviewe

    In vitro effect of fluoride oral hygiene tablets on artificial caries lesion formation and remineralization in human enamel

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aim of this <it>in-vitro</it>-study was to assess the remineralization potential of a tooth cleaning tablet with different fluoride content.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty three caries free impacted third molars were examined, enamel surfaces were wax coated leaving two 3 × 4 mm windows for exposure to demineralization/remineralization cycles. The teeth were randomly assigned to 4 groups of 5 control and 6 experimental teeth. Demineralization by standardised HEC-gel, pH 4.7 at 37°C for 72 h, was alternated by rinsing in remineralization solution, pH 7.0 at 37°C for 72 h, total challenge time 432 h. The negative control group N was treated during remineralization cycles with saline; positive control group P was treated with remineralization solution; experimental group D1 was exposed to remineralization solution containing Denttabs<sup>®</sup>-tablets with 1450 ppm F; experimental group D2 was exposed to remineralization solution and Denttabs<sup>®</sup>-tablets with 4350 ppm F. Each tooth was cut into serial sections and analyzed by polarized light microscopy for assessment of the different zones of white-spot lesions in 3 representative sections. Statistical analysis was based on the <it>Mann-Whitney</it>-Test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both control groups N(-) and P(+) exhibited characteristic white-spot lesions. The remineralization and the demineralization inhibition of the lesions increased considerably from N<P < D1<D2. Denttabs<sup>®</sup>-2 administration showed partial/total remineralization including lamination and/or disappearance of the body of the lesion. The different results of all 4 groups were statistically highly significant (p < 0.01) with both tests.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Based on these results the novel Denttabs<sup>® </sup>formulation represents a highly effective oral hygiene product and the remineralization is correlated to the fluoride content.</p

    Socioeconomic participation of persons with hemophilia:Results from the sixth hemophilia in the Netherlands study

    Background and objectives Treatment availability and comprehensive care have resulted in improved clinical outcomes for persons with hemophilia. Recent data on socioeconomic participation in the Netherlands are lacking. This study assessed participation in education, in the labor market, and social participation for persons with hemophilia compared with the general male population. Methods Dutch adults and children (5-75 years) of all hemophilia severities (n = 1009) participated in a questionnaire study that included sociodemographic, occupational, and educational variables. Clinical characteristics were extracted from electronic medical records. General population data were extracted from Statistics Netherlands. Social participation was assessed with the PROMIS Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities short form, with a minimal important difference set at 1.0. Results Data from 906 adults and children were analyzed. Participation in education of 20 to 24 year olds was 68% (general male population: 53%). Educational attainment was higher compared with Dutch males, especially for severe hemophilia. Absenteeism from school was more common than in the general population. The employment-to-population ratio and occupational disability were worse for severe hemophilia than in the general population (64.3% vs. 73.2% and 14.7% vs. 4.8%, respectively), but similar for nonsevere hemophilia. Unemployment was 5.4% (general male population: 3.4%). Absenteeism from work was less common (38% vs. 45.2%). Mean PROMIS score was similar to or higher than in the general population (54.2; SD 8.9 vs. 50; SD 10). Conclusion Socioeconomic participation of persons with nonsevere hemophilia was similar to the general male population. Some participation outcomes for persons with severe hemophilia were reduced

    Validation of a perioperative population factor VIII pharmacokinetic model with a large cohort of pediatric hemophilia a patients

    AIMS: Population pharmacokinetic (PK) models are increasingly applied to perform individualized dosing of factor VIII (FVIII) concentrates in haemophilia A patients. To guarantee accurate performance of a population PK model in dose individualization, validation studies are of importance. However, external validation of population PK models requires independent data sets and is, therefore, seldomly performed. Therefore, this study aimed to validate a previously published population PK model for FVIII concentrates administrated perioperatively. METHODS: A previously published population PK model for FVIII concentrate during surgery was validated using independent data from 87 children with severe haemophilia A with a median (range) age of 2.6 years (0.03–15.2) and body weight of 14 kg (4–57). First, the predictive performance of the previous model was evaluated with MAP Bayesian analysis using NONMEM v7.4. Subsequently, the model parameters were (re)estimated using a combined dataset consisting of the previous modelling data and the data available for the external validation. RESULTS: The previous model underpredicted the measured FVIII levels with a median of 0.17 IU mL(−1). Combining the new, independent and original data, a dataset comprising 206 patients with a mean age of 7.8 years (0.03–77.6) and body weight of 30 kg (4–111) was obtained. Population PK modelling provided estimates for CL, V1, V2, and Q: 171 mL h(−1) 68 kg(−1), 2930 mL 68 kg(−1), 1810 mL 68 kg(−1), and 172 mL h(−1) 68 kg(−1), respectively. This model adequately described all collected FVIII levels, with a slight median overprediction of 0.02 IU mL(−1). CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the importance of external validation of population PK models using real‐life data
