    Wave trains, solitons and modulation theory in FPU chains

    We present an overview of recent results concerning wave trains, solitons and their modulation in FPU chains. We take a thermodynamic perspective and use hyperbolic scaling of particle index and time in order to pass to a macroscopic continuum limit. While strong convergence yields the well-known p-system of mass and momentum conservation, we generally obtain a weak form of it in terms of Young measures. The modulation approach accounts for microscopic oscillations, which we interpret as temperature, causing convergence only in a weak, average sense. We present the arising Whitham modulation equations in a thermodynamic form, as well as analytic and numerical tools for the resolution of the modulated wave trains. As a prototype for the occurrence of temperature from oscillation-free initial data, we discuss various Riemann problems, and the arising dispersive shock fans, which replace Lax-shocks. We predict scaling and jump conditions assuming a generic soliton at the shock front

    We propose an explanation for the far-infrared/radio correlation of galaxies in terms of the energy balance of the interstellar medium and determine the flux from high-energy photons and neutrinos from starburst galaxies. We present a catalog of the 127 brightest starburst galaxies with redshifts of z<0.03. In order to investigate the correlation between radio- and far-infrared emission, we apply the leaky box approximation. Further, we derive photon- and neutrino spectra from proton-proton interactions in supernova remnants (SNRs). Here, we assume that a fraction of the SNR's energy is transferred to the acceleration of cosmic rays. We also investigate the possibility of detecting Gamma Ray Bursts from nearby starburst galaxies, using the catalog defined here. We show that the radio emission is only weakly dependent on the magnetic field. It turns out that the intensity of the radio signal is directly proportional to the number of supernova explosions, which scales with the far-infrared luminosity. In addition, we find that high-energy photons from proton-proton interactions in SNRs in starbursts can make up several percent of the diffuse gamma-ray background. The neutrino flux from the same sources has a maximum energy of ~1e5 GeV. Neutrinos can, on the other hand, can be observed if a Gamma Ray Burst happens in a nearby starburst. About 0.03 GRBs per year are expected to occur in the entire catalog. The true number is expected to be even higher, since we only include the brightest sources. The number of events per burst in IceCube varies between about one event and more than 1000 events. This provides good prospects for IceCube to detect a significant event, since the background for a GRB search is close to zero.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure

    Predictive maintenance as an internet of things enabled business model : A taxonomy

    Predictive maintenance (PdM) is an important application of the Internet of Things (IoT) discussed in many companies, especially in the manufacturing industry. PdM uses data, usually sensor data, to optimize maintenance activities. We develop a taxonomy to classify PdM business models that enables a comparison and analysis of such models. We use our taxonomy to classify the business models of 113 companies. Based on this classification, we identify six archetypes using cluster analysis and discuss the results. The “hardware development”, “analytics provider”, and “all-in-one” archetypes are the most frequently represented in the study sample. For cluster analysis, we use a visualization technique that involves an autoencoder. The results of our analysis will help practitioners assess their own business models and those of other companies. Business models can be better differentiated by considering the different levels of IoT architecture, which is also an important implication for further research. © 2020, The Author(s)

    The complete anharmonic cubic and quartic force field of the two carbonyl stretching vibrations of a rhodium di-carbonyl complex is calculated at the density functional level and used to simulate the third-order vibrational response function. The infrared photon echo spectrum calculated using the diagonalized resulting exciton Hamiltonian is in qualitative agreement with measured values. Quartic terms in the potential are critical for reproducing the experimental transition energies and transition dipoles
