Marie Dressler

Marie Dressler was a top star who died at the height of her popularity. Her career is thoroughly documented, and this synopsis unavoidably recounts the tireless efforts of biographies by Betty Lee and Matthew Kennedy. She remains a comedienne with a loyal following, with a foundation and museum in her birthplace of Cobourg, Ontario. In the context of women behind-the-scenes in early film production, Dressler provides an example of a failed attempt to turn stage and screen fame into an eponymous production company where she had a hand in writing the resulting two-reelers. In the mid-1910s, it was common to turn movie stardom into professional autonomy by creating an eponymous film company. Dressler’s self-produced films were the last before a well-mythologized descent into poverty and reemergence as an MGM early-sound star with the help of loyal friend, screenwriter Frances Marion. Her decline coincided with well-publicized off-screen activities including the World War I bond drive and the 1919 Actors’ Equity strike. Assertions that she was the victim of anti-union blacklisting remain unsubstantiated by her biographers Lee and Kennedy, who conclude instead that she had simply spent too much time off stage and screen, or in lackluster roles

Dressler syndrome after myocardial infarction: a case report

Dressler syndrome is a rare type of secondary pericarditis that occurs after the injury of the heart by a myocardial infarction (MI), chest trauma, or heart surgery. The symptoms of Dressler syndrome usually present one to six weeks after the myocardial infarction with pleuritic chest pain, fever, dyspnoea, and ECG changes. It is estimated that only 0,1% of patients who have had acute myocardial infarction develop Dressler syndrome

After reviewing why personal identity presents a problem for punishment, I discuss how a personal identity defense would fit within the criminal law, including when it would undermine status responsibility, when it would undermine a voluntary act, and when it would serve as an excuse

A study of the roots on stem cuttings of Pedilanthus tithymaloides Smallii (Millsp.) Dressler

The geographical distribution of Pedilanthus tithymaloides is variously listed as Tropical America (Engler, 1919); from Florida to Venezuela (Taylor, 1936); and Caribbean America (Dressler, 1957). Because of its use as an ornamental, the plant is also found in Mexico, China and Java (Dressler, 1957); Hawaii (Degener. 1940); and Bermuda (Britton, 1918). Banerji (1951) and Rao (1956) have worked with fresh hedge material from India. White et al (1941) report that the species is found growing on the graves of natives in Zululand and Rhodesis, and acknowledge that the introduction from American into the native kraals is a mystery. The present interest in the geographical distribution of the plant relates to its modifications for a xeric habitat. Dressler (1957) describes the species as a moderately succulent xerophytic and correlates vessel diameter of the stem with the habitat and relatively higher requirement for rapid water conduction
