    Do changing institutional settings matter? : educational attainment and family related employment interruptions in Germany

    "Cross-sectional studies show that in West Germany women with different levels of educational attainment participate differently in the labor market. In this paper, I examine one potential underlying mechanism: the re-entry of mothers in the labor market after a period of inactivity. I argue that besides societal changes the reforms of parental leave legislation could be responsible for the educational divide in mothers' employment. Hypotheses are derived from human capital theory and labor supply theory assuming a rational behavior of women. Using retrospective life-course data from the IAB study ALWA, I find evidence that women with different levels of educational attainment have different re-entry patterns also when taking the educational attainment of the partner into account. Furthermore, parental leave schemes play a crucial role for re-entries. Some evidence of an educational polarization of re-entry behavior is found after the year 2000."     Behavioral Intentions, Actual Behavior and the Role of Personality Traits: Evidence from a Factorial Survey Among Female Labor Market Re-Entrants

    Factorial surveys (FS) are used frequently to draw conclusions about behavior. However, in FS only behavioral intentions are measured and answering fictive situations are likely to be connected with individual personality traits. Therefore, it is unclear to what extent behavioral intentions as measured by FS and actual behavior are related. It is also unclear whether and how personality traits influence intentions and actual behavior. This paper addresses this subject matter by analyzing these research questions. The theory of planned behavior serves as the theoretical basis (Ajzen, 1991). The research questions are addressed with data from a factorial survey collected among 395 prospective female labor market re-entrants. They were asked about their willingness to accept lower wages if compensated by "positive" nonmonetary job characteristics. A follow-up study after one year also included information on actual behavior, i.e., whether the woman has found a job. The analysis reveals that women who are willing to accept "negative" job characteristics are more likely to re-enter employment, suggesting a high correlation between results from the factorial survey and actual behavior and thus external validity. Furthermore, personality traits only have a minor influence on behavioral intentions and behavior. This confounds previous non-experimental research results. However, some individual effects are different in the intentions and behavioral model, which also indicates differences between experimental and real-world settings

    Improving retrospective life course data by combining modularized self-reports and event history calendars : experiences from a large scale survey

    "Event history calendars (EHC) have proven to be a useful tool to collect retrospective autobiographic life course data. One problem is that they are only standardized to some extent. This limits their applicability in large-scale surveys. However, in such surveys a modularized retrospective CATI design can be combined with EHC. This data revision module is directly integrated into the interview and used as a data revision module. Hereby insights from cognitive psychology are applied. The data revision module stimulates the respondent's memory retrieval by detecting both temporal inconsistencies, such as gaps, and overlapping or parallel events. This approach was implemented in the IAB-ALWA study (Work and Learning in a Changing World), a large-scale representative telephone survey with 10,000 respondents. By comparing the uncorrected data with the final data after revision, we investigate to what extent the application of this data revision module improves data quality or more precisely, time consistency and dating accuracy of individual reports."     The re-entry of mothers in Germany into employment after family-related interruptions: empirical evidence and methodological aspects from a life course perspective

    It is still difficult for mothers in Germany to reconcile family life with employment. This becomes particularly apparent when mothers attempt to re-enter the labour market. Partly this varies very strongly according to level of education; partly legal regulations on parental leave play a decisive role. In addition, women in the Western part of Germany interrupt their employment for a longer time than women from the Eastern part of Germany - even twenty years after reunification. In the meantime, this appears to be more a result of different institutional regulations rather than differing socialisation. Finally, the re-entry of mothers into the labour market after interrupting their employment to have and look after children also seems to depend on the characteristics of the jobs offered. Here it becomes apparent that, along with pay, non-monetary characteristics also play an important role - especially those affecting one's personal time budget.Familie und ErwerbstĂ€tigkeit miteinander zu vereinbaren, ist fĂŒr MĂŒtter in Deutschland noch immer schwierig. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere beim Wiedereinstieg in den Arbeitsmarkt. Dieser variiert zum einen sehr stark mit dem Bildungsniveau, zum anderen spielen gesetzliche Regelungen zu Erziehungszeiten eine entscheidende Rolle. Zudem unterbrechen Frauen in Westdeutschland ihre ErwerbstĂ€tigkeit lĂ€nger als Frauen in Ostdeutschland - auch 20 Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung. Dies scheint indes weniger der unterschiedlichen Sozialisation geschuldet als unterschiedlichen institutionellen Regelungen. Schließlich hĂ€ngt der Wiedereinstieg von MĂŒttern nach einer familienbedingten Erwerbsunterbrechung auch von den Charakteristika der angebotenen Stellen ab. Hier zeigt sich: Neben der Entlohnung spielen auch nicht-monetĂ€re Eigenschaften der Arbeitsstelle eine wichtige Rolle - insbesondere solche, die Einfluss auf das individuelle Zeitbudget haben

    "Further education and training activities are considered to be recalled only with difficulty. Therefore non-formal and informal training activities have mostly not been collected in retrospective surveys. Within the framework of the IAB-ALWA study 'Working and Learning in a Changing World' also short and relatively insignificant training episodes that occurred sometime in the past are of central interest. For this reason it is examined whether the recalling of activities through a context based re-trieval process is realistic. Thus we addressed in a cognitive pretest the question whether by remembering further education episodes there is a connection between the memory strategies used by respondents and the amount of events as well as the time-lag to the context of memorization - in our case the employment episodes. The results of the cognitive pretest show that respondents remember training activities from the recent past well. For long foregone events context based memory strategies are frequently used. In sum it is shown that the context based retrieval process is an appropiate instrument for the retrospective data collection of training activities which are dated back only few years. The longer the retrospective intervall, the greater the memory problems which cannot be compensated by the context based retrieval process. Based on the findings of the cognitive pretest adopted instruments were applied in the main survey of the IAB-ALWA study and in the follow-up study, the first wave of the adult stage of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)."     Canary Bornavirus (Orthobornavirus serini) Infections Are Associated with Clinical Symptoms in Common Canaries (Serinus canaria dom.)

    While parrot bornaviruses are accepted as the cause of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) in psittacine birds, the pathogenic role of bornaviruses in common canaries is still unclear. To answer the question of whether canary bornaviruses (species Orthobornavirus serini) are associatednwith a PDD-like disease in common canaries (Serinus canaria f. dom.), the clinical data of 201 canary bird patients tested for bornaviruses using RT-PCR assays, were analyzed for the presence of PDD-like gastrointestinal or central nervous system signs and for other viruses (mainly circovirus and polyomavirus), yeasts and trichomonads. Canary bornavirus RNA was detected in the clinical samples of 40 out of 201 canaries (19.9%) coming from 28 of 140 flocks (20%). All nucleotide sequences obtained could unequivocally be determined as canary bornavirus 1, 2, or 3 supporting the current taxonomy of the species Orthobornavirus serini. PDD-like signs were found associated with canary bornavirus detection, and to a lesser extent, with circoviruses detection, but not with the detection of polyomaviruses, yeasts or trichomonads. The data indicate that canary bornaviruses contribute to a PDD-like disease in naturally infected canaries, and suggest a promoting effect of circoviruses for the development of PDD-like signs

    KontextgestĂŒtzte Abfrage in Retrospektiverhebungen: ein kognitiver Pretest zu Erinnerungsprozessen bei Weiterbildungsereignissen

    "WeiterbildungsaktivitĂ€ten gelten als schwer erinnerbare Ereignisse. Daher wurde bislang auf die retrospektive Erhebung nicht-formaler und informeller WeiterbildungsaktivitĂ€ten weitgehend verzichtet. Im Rahmen der IAB-Studie 'Arbeiten und Lernen im Wandel (ALWA)' stehen jedoch auch kurze und unbedeutende, oft weiter zurĂŒckliegende WeiterbildungsaktivitĂ€ten im Fokus. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es zu untersuchen, ob die Erinnerung an diese AktivitĂ€ten mittels einer kontextgestĂŒtzten Erfassung verbessert werden kann. Daher sind wir der Frage nachgegangen, ob es beim Erinnern von Weiterbildungsereignissen einen Zusammenhang zwischen den von den Befragten verwendeten Erinnerungsstrategien und der Anzahl der Ereignisse sowie dem zeitlichen Abstand zu den Erinnerungskontexten – in unserem Fall den Erwerbsepisoden – gibt. Dabei ĂŒbertragen wir den Ansatz des kognitiven Pretests – einer qualitativen Methode, die ursprĂŒnglich zur Validierung des VerstĂ€ndnisses von Survey-Fragen entwickelt wurde – auf die Untersuchung der Art und Weise des Abrufens von an sich schwer erinnerbaren Ereignissen. Die Ergebnisse des kognitiven Pretests zeigen, dass sich Befragte gut an WeiterbildungsaktivitĂ€ten erinnern, die weniger weit in der Vergangenheit liegen. Bei lĂ€nger zurĂŒckliegenden Ereignissen werden meist kontextgestĂŒtzte Erinnerungsstrategien angewandt. Insgesamt zeigt sich, dass die kontextspezifische Abfrage ein geeignetes Mittel fĂŒr die retrospektive Erfassung von WeiterbildungsaktivitĂ€ten ist, die nur wenige Jahre zurĂŒckliegen. Mit einer Zunahme des retrospektiven Zeitraums wachsen die Erinnerungsprobleme allerdings so stark, dass diese auch durch eine kontextspezifische Abfrage nicht behoben werden können.     Development and Application of the Owner-Bird Relationship Scale (OBRS) to Assess the Relation of Humans to Their Pet Birds

    Only a few birds besides domestic pigeons and poultry can be described as domesticated. Therefore, keeping a pet bird can be challenging, and the human-avian relationship will have a major influence on the quality of this cohabitation. Studies that focus on characterizing the owner-bird relationship generally use adapted cat/dog scales which may not identify its specific features. Following a sociological approach, a concept of human-animal relationship was developed leading to three types of human-animal relationship (impersonal, personal, and close personal). This concept was used to develop a 21-item owner-bird-relationship scale (OBRS). This scale was applied to measure the relationship between pet bird owners (or keepers) (n = 1,444) and their birds in an online survey performed in Germany. Factor analysis revealed that the relationship between owner and bird consisted of four dimensions: the tendency of the owner to anthropomorphize the bird;the social support the bird provides for the owner;the empathy, attentiveness, and respect of the owner toward the bird;and the relationship of the bird toward the owner. More than one quarter of the German bird owners of this sample showed an impersonal, half a personal, and less than a quarter a close personal relationship to their bird. The relationship varied with the socio-demographic characteristics of the owners, such as gender, marital status, and education. This scale supports more comprehensive quantitative research into the human-bird relationship in the broad field of human-animal studies including the psychology and sociology of animals as well as animal welfare and veterinary medicine

    Die Mensch-Tier-Beziehung in der tierÀrztlichen Praxis

    Welche Relevanz hat die Beziehung des Besitzers zu seinem Tier fĂŒr die TĂ€tigkeit einer tierĂ€rztlichen Praxis? Es kann von einem Interaktionsdreieck gesprochen werden, in dem sich Besitzer, Tier und Tierarzt/TierĂ€rztin gegenseitig beeinflussen (Taubert 2015). Diverse Studien konnten einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Einfluss des Menschen auf das Wohlbefinden des Tieres und der Mensch-Tier-Beziehung zeigen (Bergler et al. 2011; Klaphake und Smith 2002; Kurdek 2008; Lue et al. 2008; Patronek et al. 1996). FĂŒr die vorliegende Studie wurde die Mensch-Tier-Beziehung aus der Perspektive der tierĂ€rztlichen Untersuchung und Behandlung von Heimtieren in den Blick genommen. Mittels der Dimensionen: „Serie von Interaktionen“, „personale EntitĂ€t, Du-Evidenz“, „Gegenseitigkeit“, „Emotionales Band“ und „Empathie“ wurden drei Konzepte der Mensch-Tier-Beziehung vorgeschlagen (unpersönliche, persönliche sowie enge persönliche Mensch-Tier-Beziehung). In einem interdisziplinĂ€ren Ansatz zwischen Tiermedizin und Soziologie wurde eine psychometrische Skala („Owner-Bird-Relationship-Scale“) als Instrument zur Erfassung der Mensch-Vogel-Beziehung entwickelt und getestet. Dieses Messinstrument wurde in einem standardisierten Online-Fragebogen an Vogelhalter in Deutschland verbreitet. Die Auswertung der Befragung von 1458 Vogelhaltern erfolgte mittels multivariater Analyseverfahren. Die Beziehung zwischen Vogelhaltern und ihren Vögeln ließ sich im Rahmen von Faktorenanalysen mittels vier Beziehungsdimensionen beschreiben und war spezifisch fĂŒr die jeweilige Besitzer-Vogel-Konstellation. Anhand der AusprĂ€gungen der Beziehungsdimensionen konnten mit Hilfe clusteranalytischer Verfahren fĂŒnf verschiedene Typen von Vogelhaltern identifiziert werden. Es konnte mittels multivariater linearer und logistischer Regressionsverfahren gezeigt werden, dass die Beziehung des Halters zu seinem Vogel Einfluss auf das Verhalten des Besitzers in der tierĂ€rztlichen Untersuchung und Behandlung hat. Es bestand ein Zusammenhang zwischen der Mensch-Vogel-Beziehung und jeweils der Bereitschaft hohe Tierarztkosten zu tragen, dem Informationsverhalten des Halters, dem Verhalten im Erkrankungsfall sowie der Bedeutung der Spezialisierung eines Tierarztes fĂŒr den Vogelhalter
