Strengthening Your Hip Muscles: Some Exercises May Be Better Than Others

    Get PDF
Weak hip muscles lead to poor hip motion, and poor hip motion can cause knee, hip, and back pain. Strengthening hip muscles that control how hips move may reduce pain in these parts of the body. This undergraduate research project compared hip abductor muscle activity during selected exercises using electromyography in order to determine which exercises are best for activating the gluteus medius and the superior portion of the gluteus maximus, while minimizing activity of the tensor fascia lata. Participants in this study included nine healthy female soccer players between the ages of 18 and 21. Using an electromyogram (EMG), the muscle activity of the nine subjects was recorded during the following 11 exercises: hip abduction in sidelying, clam with elastic resistance around thighs, bilateral bridge, unilateral bridge, hip extension in quadruped on elbows with knee extending, hip extension in quadruped on elbows with knee flexed, forward lunge with erect trunk, squat, sidestep with elastic resistance in a squatted position, hip hike, and forward step-up. At this time, data collection and analysis continues; however, it is hypothesized that both gluteal muscles were significantly more active than the TFL in unilateral and bilateral bridging, quadruped hip extension, the clam, sidestepping, and squatting

Prudence and Robustness as Explanations for Precautionary Savings; an Evaluation

    Get PDF
This paper evaluates approximation methods to make manageable the numerical solution of overlapping generation models with aggregate risk. The paper starts with a model in which households maximize expected utility over their life cycle. Instantaneous utility is characterized by constant relative risk aversion. Prudence, a characteristic of the utility function, leads to precautionary saving. The first-order conditions include expectations. One source of uncertainty is not prohibitive for numerical integration of the expectation term. Because of its accuracy numerical integration results are used as a bench mark. Taylor series approximations can lead to the same results dependent on the linearization point. A linear quadratic approximation of the household model is evaluated subsequently. Alternatively, precautionary saving effects can be the result of robust decision making. This approach leads to linear policy functions and gives a rather good approximation of the bench mark model, although not as good as the Taylor series approximation.

    Octonions and exceptional Lie algebras

It is well known that octonions (both real and complex) are very involved in the structure of the exceptional Lie algebras. We will explore several aspects of this relationship: how octonions provide models of the exceptional Lie algebras, coordinatizating them by means of structurable algebras. This plays an important role in the description of their inner ideals, and, in turn, these appear naturally in certain point-line geometries. In general, these constructions are related to gradings over the integers. We will use also the octonions and related structures to approach gradings on exceptional Lie algebras but over finite groups. Contrary to the situation above, these gradings are related to semisimple elements, and the nice symmetry behind the constructions is reflected in the corresponding Lie groups and in Particle Physics.Universidad de Málaga.
