Occupational Status of High School Graduates
In recent years there has been a feeling among some educators that the secondary school was failing to equip its graduates with any practical training, either as a preparation for courses of higher learning or for professions. One of the broad purposes of this study was to determine to what degree of the graduates of Fountain High School, Fountain, Colorado, have been able to cope with the economic and social conditions of life
The Stellar Activity - Rotation Relationship
Using a new catalog of 824 solar and late-type stars with X-ray luminosities
and rotation periods we have studied the relationship between rotation and
stellar activity. From an unbiased subset of this sample the power law slope of
the unsaturated regime, , is fit as
. This is inconsistent with the canonical slope
to a confidence of 5 and argues for an interface-type dynamo.
Super-saturation is observed for the fastest rotators in our sample and its
parametric dependencies are explored. Significant correlations are found with
both the corotation radius and the excess polar updraft, the latter theory
being supported by other observations. We also present a new X-ray population
synthesis model of the mature stellar component of our Galaxy and use it to
reproduce deep observations of a high Galactic latitude field. The model,
XStar, can be used to test models of stellar spin-down and dynamo decay, as
well as for estimating stellar X-ray contamination rates for non-stellar
studies.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. To appear in the proceedings of Cool Stars 17:

Comments on a new mathematical technique in the theory of complex spectra
A large body of work on the algebraic properties of the Gelfand labelling scheme for atoms with several electrons has recently been synthesized by Harter (see abstr. A31652 of 1974) into a compact procedure for the construction of total angular momentum eigenfunctions and the evaluation of angular coefficients. Certain ambiguities in the procedure are removed. Also, an improved method for the diagonalization of the angular momentum matrix in the Galfand basis set is presented. As an example, the doublet states of the f 3 configuration are discussed
Spin-orbit parameters by the Gelfand-Harter method-a test calculation
The spin-orbit parameters for the sextet states of the f5 configuration are computed using the Young-tableau techniques developed by Harter. The conceptual and computational advantages over traditional methods are discussed. © 1977 The American Physical Society
Host-Parasite Co-evolution and Optimal Mutation Rates for Semi-conservative Quasispecies
In this paper, we extend a model of host-parasite co-evolution to incorporate
the semi-conservative nature of DNA replication for both the host and the
parasite. We find that the optimal mutation rate for the semi-conservative and
conservative hosts converge for realistic genome lengths, thus maintaining the
admirable agreement between theory and experiment found previously for the
conservative model and justifying the conservative approximation in some cases.
We demonstrate that, while the optimal mutation rate for a conservative and
semi-conservative parasite interacting with a given immune system is similar to
that of a conservative parasite, the properties away from this optimum differ
significantly. We suspect that this difference, coupled with the requirement
that a parasite optimize survival in a range of viable hosts, may help explain
why semi-conservative viruses are known to have significantly lower mutation
rates than their conservative counterparts
Detection of Close-In Extrasolar Giant Planets Using the Fourier-Kelvin Stellar Interferometer
We evaluate the direct detection of extrasolar giant planets with a
two-aperture nulling infrared interferometer, working at angles
, and using a new `ratio-of-two-wavelengths' technique.
Simple arguments suggest that interferometric detection and characterization
should be quite possible for planets much closer than the conventional inner
working angle, or angular resolution limit. We show that the peak signal from a
nulling infrared interferometer of baseline ( meters) will often
occur `inside the null', and that the signal variations from path-difference
fluctuations will cancel to first order in the ratio of two wavelengths. Using
a new interferometer simulation code, we evaluate the detectability of all the
known extrasolar planets as observed using this two-color method with the
proposed {\it Fourier Kelvin Stellar Interferometer (FKSI)}. In its minimum
configuration {\it FKSI} uses two 0.5-meter apertures on a 12.5-meter baseline,
and a field-of-regard. We predict that known
extrasolar planets are directly detectable using {\it FKSI}, with
low-resolution spectroscopy () being possible in the most favorable
cases. Spaceborne direct detection of extrasolar giant planets is possible with
meter baselines, and does not require the much longer baselines
provided by formation flying.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
All-Electron Path Integral Monte Carlo Simulations of Warm Dense Matter: Application to Water and Carbon Plasmas
We develop an all-electron path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method with
free-particle nodes for warm dense matter and apply it to water and carbon
plasmas. We thereby extend PIMC studies beyond hydrogen and helium to elements
with core electrons. PIMC pressures, internal energies, and pair-correlation
functions compare well with density functional theory molecular dynamics
(DFT-MD) at temperatures of (2.5-7.5) K and both methods together
form a coherent equation of state (EOS) over a density-temperature range of
3--12 g/cm and 10--10 K
An Algorithm for constructing Hjelmslev planes
Projective Hjelmslev planes and Affine Hjelmselv planes are generalisations
of projective planes and affine planes. We present an algorithm for
constructing a projective Hjelmslev planes and affine Hjelsmelv planes using
projective planes, affine planes and orthogonal arrays. We show that all
2-uniform projective Hjelmslev planes, and all 2-uniform affine Hjelsmelv
planes can be constructed in this way. As a corollary it is shown that all
2-uniform Affine Hjelmselv planes are sub-geometries of 2-uniform projective
Hjelmselv planes.Comment: 15 pages. Algebraic Design Theory and Hadamard matrices, 2014,

An explanation of the Newman-Janis Algorithm
After the original discovery of the Kerr metric, Newman and Janis showed that
this solution could be ``derived'' by making an elementary complex
transformation to the Schwarzschild solution. The same method was then used to
obtain a new stationary axisymmetric solution to Einstein's field equations now
known as the Kerr-newman metric, representing a rotating massive charged black
hole. However no clear reason has ever been given as to why the Newman-Janis
algorithm works, many physicist considering it to be an ad hoc procedure or
``fluke'' and not worthy of further investigation. Contrary to this belief this
paper shows why the Newman-Janis algorithm is successful in obtaining the
Kerr-Newman metric by removing some of the ambiguities present in the original
derivation. Finally we show that the only perfect fluid generated by the
Newman-Janis algorithm is the (vacuum) Kerr metric and that the only Petrov
typed D solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations is the Kerr-Newman metric.Comment: 14 pages, no figures, submitted to Class. Quantum Gra
