In order to estimate animal health status and product quality in organic pig production a survey was carried out on 21 farms. Implementation of farm management and hygiene measures was assessed by using a concept based on critical control points (CCP). Animal health status was estimated by examinations of the carcass at the abattoir, taking nearly 50,000 pigs into account of which 4132 pigs derived from the assessed organic pig farms. One of the main pathological findings were “milk spots” in the liver and lung diseases. Spot sampling of blood analysed for antibodies versus mycoplasma and salmonella revealed that most of the animals had contact to the pathogen agents. Carcass quality rated in the EUROP-System was lower in organic compared to conventional farms; mean intramuscular fat content and pH1 showed no preference for organic pork. The results indicate that most of the assessed organic pig farms did not met the high demands in relation to animal health and quality assurance. Insufficient feedback by the way of the market price and missing health and quality control schemes are jointly responsible for existing deficits and offer the options to improve the current situation

Practicum Experiences of Prospective Teachers: The Inevitable Adaptation to Teaching Online

Prospective teachers (students) in the Bachelor of Education (BEd.) programme at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Year Three, would have been required to conduct ‘field’ practicum at various schools throughout the country, under normal circumstances. However, due to the pandemic and the closure of all schools, only online classes were conducted and adaptations had to be made to acclimatize to the situation. Prospective teachers were required to engage in teaching to their peers online, together with micro-teaching which complemented the process. Instructors as well as classmates and presenters engaged in critique, rigorous analysis, reflection and feedback. The sample included forty (40) full-time students, generally between the ages of 18 to 25, who had no previous classroom teaching experiences. A mixed-method approach was deemed as suitable to investigate how prospective teachers adapted to online teaching and learning to implement the content of the prescribed curriculum. Online questionnaires, focus group interviews, via Zoom and reflective writings were used to collect data. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were integrated for data analyses. The findings revealed that most prospective teachers were very proficient with the use of the Zoom platform and were very creative in their approaches for teaching using videos, online games, power point presentations and voice-overs. However, there were instances of major problems involving internet connectivity and instability, particularly for those who live in remote villages. In addition, some students preferred online-teaching, while others indicated a preference for a blended approach. The results have serious connotations for the health and well-being of students. Those who are constrained by a lack of internet feel disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalized

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: A Marriage of Innovation in Nursing EBP and Digital Literacy Education

Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the foundation of modern health services. It improves patient outcomes and quality of care by combining clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence to guide health care decisions. The ability to find, evaluate and apply evidence is essential for EBP. However, preparing the future nursing workforce with the required knowledge and skills to do so can be a challenge. Objectives: At Murdoch University, we have integrated various digital tools with our personal learning platform to develop an interactive tutorial for final-year nursing students. The tutorial aims to improve skills in the areas of research, critical appraisal and digital literacy. Methods: Using the analogy of a marriage, this paper will present the case study of a collaborative project between the University Library and the College of Science, Health, Engineering & Education (the ‘wedding party’) to develop a self-paced, interactive online tutorial on database searching and systematic reviews, as applied in nursing practice. Four key elements went into planning this marriage: Something old: Camtasia (familiar to both Library and College) Something new: LibWizard (a new Library software acquisition) Something borrowed: PebblePad (managed by the College) Something blue: Digital badging (micro-credentialing) These elements were integrated into a single digital learning object, which was launched in late January 2019 (the ‘wedding’). Results: This innovative online tutorial was successful in engaging students and developing their digital and information literacy skills for evidence-based practice, and future improvements were also identified

Zebrafish Trap230/Med12 is required for Sox9 activity and limb induction

This thesis deals with the mapping and cloning of trapped (tpd), a novel zebrafish mutant found to disrupt an ortholog of Trap230, a member of the Mediator complex. Mediator is a coactivator complex transducing the interaction of DNA-binding transcription factors with RNA polymerase II. The vertebrate Sox9 transcription factor directs the development of neural crest, otic placodes, cartilage, and bone. In zebrafish, there are two Sox9 orthologs, Sox9a and Sox9b, which together perform the functions of the single-copy tetrapod Sox9. The mutant phenotypes of tpd and the Sox9a/Sox9b double mutant are remarkably similar. The results of this thesis show that Trap230 is required for Sox9 activity. In addition, I show that Trap230 is required for an early step in pectoral fin induction, indicating that it also participates in Sox9-independent signaling events. Moreover, additional phenotypes in brain, eye, heart, muscle and gut development as well as axon guidance and a general downregulation phenotype of fibroblast growth factor expression in tpd mutants are described. These phenotypes may or may not be Sox9- dependent. This is the first characterisation of a vertebrate Trap230 mutant, and reveals a surprisingly specific requirement for Trap230 in mediating Sox9 activity

Institutional repositories and heritage materials in selected institutions within three African countries

This study investigates how institutional repositories are making hidden or lost cultural digital heritage accessible in academic libraries in selected countries within Africa. The design of the study is a descriptive design. The research makes use of a structured questionnaire prepared using Google forms and sent through e-mail to 40 members of academic staff in selected academic libraries in three African countries namely; Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. In all, 35 responses were received, generating a 87.5% response rate. Data collected was analyzed using an Excel Spreadsheet. The findings reveal that 25(78.1%) indicated that they have only theses/dissertations as their institutional repository, while 22(68.8%) showed they have research articles and manuscripts in their institutional repository respectively. Nearly all the respondents (95.7%) use their institutional repositories for research purposes, 87% use it to contribute/deposit materials into the repository for others to use. The study also discovered that about 85% benefit from using digitized heritage materials. Inadequate funds, unstable power supply, poor internet connectivity, and poor marketing of an institutional repository among others are the major challenges faced in the implementation and uses of IRs. It was therefore recommended that the management of the institutions should ensure that enough funds are allocated for the implementation of IRs. Further recommendations include the establishment of effective advocacy measures that will create awareness both within and outside the academic environment on implementation and uses of an institutional repository in academic institutions in Africa

Abstract

Background

We are reporting the first Collagenofibrotic Glomerulopathy (CG) in South America. So, this collagen type III glomerulopathy is not limited to Japan but may be found throughout the world.

Case Reports

We describe three patients that presented some factors in common, such as sex, age and the presence of non-nephrotic proteinuria associated with microscopic hematuria. The findings with the immunofluorescence microscopy, of immunoglobulins, and components of the complement were usually negative. The picrosyrius staining showed the presence of reddish material in the mesangium, when it was seen under standard microscopy; however, when it was seen with birefringence, it became greenish under polarized light, showed the collagen found in this area of the glomerulus. The identification of CG was made through electronic microscopic scanning, and curved and disorganized fibers were found.

Conclusion

These cases are the first from South America to be reported, and they are about an idiopathic renal disease that is not related to any specific races or locations. The reports contribute to a better understanding of this disease, which although not so prevalent, should be considered as an importantly differential diagnostic of cases of proteinuria.</p
