    Snow reflectance from thematic mapper

    Calculations of snow reflectance in all 6 TM reflective bands (i.e., 1,2,3,4,5, and 7) using a delta Eddington model show that snow reflectance in bands 4,5, and 7 is sensitive to grain size. Efforts to interpret the surface optical grain size for the spectral extension of albedo are described. Results show the TM data include spectral channels suitable for snow/cloud discrimination and for snow albedo measurements that can be extended throughout the solar spectrum. Except for band 1, the dynamic range is large enough that saturation occurs only occasionally. The finer resolution gives much better detail on the snowcovered area and might make it possible to use textural information instead of the snowline as an index to the amount of snow melt runoff

It appears that the TM filters resemble a ""square-wave'' closely enough that a square-wave can be assumed in calculations. Integrated band reflectance over the actual response functions was calculated using sensor data supplied by Santa Barbara Research Center. Differences between integrating over the actual response functions and the equivalent square wave were negligible. Tables are given which show (1) sensor saturation radiance as a percentage of the solar constant, integrated through the band response function; (2) comparisons of integrations through the sensor response function with integrations over the equivalent square wave; and (3) calculations of integrated reflectance for snow over all reflective TM bands, and water and ice clouds with thickness of 1 mm water equivalent over TM bands 5 and 7. These calculations look encouraging for snow/cloud discrimination with TM bands 5 and 7

    The atmospheric radiative transfer calculation program (ATARD) and its supporting programs (setting up atmospheric profile, making Mie tables and an exponential-sum-fitting table) were completed. More sophisticated treatment of aerosol scattering (including angular phase function or asymmetric factor) and multichannel analysis of results from ATRAD are being developed. Some progress was made on a Monte Carlo program for examining two dimensional effects, specifically a surface boundary condition that varies across a scene. The MONTE program combines ATRAD and the Monte Carlo method together to produce an atmospheric point spread function. Currently the procedure passes monochromatic tests and the results are reasonable

Snow reflectance in all 6 TM reflective bands, i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 was simulated, using Wiscombe and Warren's (1980) delta-Eddington model. Snow reflectance in bands 4, 5, and 7 appear sensitive to grain size. One of the objectives is to interpret surface optical grain size of snow, for spectral extension of albedo.     Latch fittings which kinematically mount the replaceable scientific instruments onto the Space Telescope must maintain precise alignment and thermal stability for on-orbit observations. Design features which are needed to meet stringent criteria include the use of ceramic isolators for thermal and electrical insulation, materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion for athermalization, precision manufacturing procedures, and extremely tight tolerances.     Time-dependent response of filamentary composite spherical pressure vessels

    A filamentary composite spherical pressure vessel is modeled as a pseudoisotropic (or transversely isotropic) composite shell, with the effects of the liner and fill tubes omitted. Equations of elasticity, macromechanical and micromechanical formulations, and laminate properties are derived for the application of an internally pressured spherical composite vessel. Viscoelastic properties for the composite matrix are used to characterize time-dependent behavior. Using the maximum strain theory of failure, burst pressure and critical strain equations are formulated, solved in the Laplace domain with an associated elastic solution, and inverted back into the time domain using the method of collocation. Viscoelastic properties of HBFR-55 resin are experimentally determined and a Kevlar/HBFR-55 system is evaluated with a FORTRAN program. The computed reduction in burst pressure with respect to time indicates that the analysis employed may be used to predict the time-dependent response of a filamentary composite spherical pressure vessel
