Large spin relaxation rates in trapped submerged-shell atoms
Spin relaxation due to atom-atom collisions is measured for magnetically
trapped erbium and thulium atoms at a temperature near 500 mK. The rate
constants for Er-Er and Tm-Tm collisions are 3.0 times 10^-10 cm^3 s^-1 and 1.1
times 10^-10 cm^3 s^-1, respectively, 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than those
observed for highly magnetic S-state atoms. This is strong evidence for an
additional, dominant, spin relaxation mechanism, electrostatic anisotropy, in
collisions between these "submerged-shell" L > 0 atoms. These large spin
relaxation rates imply that evaporative cooling of these atoms in a magnetic
trap will be highly inefficient.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Preliminary analysis of three cycles for nuclear propulsion of aircraft
A preliminary study was made of the feasibility of three cycles for nuclear propulsion of aircraft: a direct-air-turbojet, a binary liquid-metal turbojet, and a helium compressor jet. All three cycles appeared feasible for flight at a Mach number of 0.9 and altitudes up to 50,000 feet; the liquid-metal cycle appeared feasible for flight at a Mach number of 1.5. The air and helium cycles resulted in heavier aircraft than did the liquid-metal cycle, particularly at a Mach number of 1.5. The relative advantage of the liquid-metal cycle became greater as the flight speed and altitude increased, and as the reactor wall temperature decreased
The exact evaluation of the corner-to-corner resistance of an M x N resistor network: Asymptotic expansion
We study the corner-to-corner resistance of an M x N resistor network with
resistors r and s in the two spatial directions, and obtain an asymptotic
expansion of its exact expression for large M and N. For M = N, r = s =1, our
result is
R_{NxN} = (4/pi) log N + 0.077318 + 0.266070/N^2 - 0.534779/N^4 + O(1/N^6).Comment: 12 pages, re-arranged section
Influence of low-level Pr substitution on the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals
We report on measurements on Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals, with x
varying from 0 to 2.4%. The upper and the lower critical fields, Hc2 and Hc1,
the Ginzburg-Landau parameter and the critical current density, Jc(B), were
determined from magnetization measurements and the effective media approach
scaling method. We present the influence of Pr substitution on the pinning
force density as well as on the trapped field profiles analyzed by Hall probe
scanning.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys. Conf. Se
Shot-noise-limited spin measurements in a pulsed molecular beam
Heavy diatomic molecules have been identified as good candidates for use in
electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) searches. Suitable molecular species can
be produced in pulsed beams, but with a total flux and/or temporal evolution
that varies significantly from pulse to pulse. These variations can degrade the
experimental sensitivity to changes in spin precession phase of an electri-
cally polarized state, which is the observable of interest for an eEDM
measurement. We present two methods for measurement of the phase that provide
immunity to beam temporal variations, and make it possible to reach
shot-noise-limited sensitivity. Each method employs rapid projection of the
spin state onto both components of an orthonormal basis. We demonstrate both
methods using the eEDM-sensitive H state of thorium monoxide (ThO), and use one
of them to measure the magnetic moment of this state with increased accuracy
relative to previous determinations.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Exact solution for random walks on the triangular lattice with absorbing boundaries
The problem of a random walk on a finite triangular lattice with a single
interior source point and zig-zag absorbing boundaries is solved exactly. This
problem has been previously considered intractable.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, IOP macro
Zeeman Relaxation of Cold Atomic Iron and Nickel in Collisions with 3He
We have measured the ratio of the diffusion cross-section to the angular
momentum reorientation cross-section in the colliding Fe-3He and Ni-3He
systems. Nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe) atoms are introduced via laser ablation into
a cryogenically cooled experimental cell containing cold (< 1 K) 3He buffer
gas. Elastic collisions rapidly cool the translational temperature of the
ablated atoms to the helium temperature. The cross-section ratio is extracted
by measuring the decays of the atomic Zeeman sublevels. For our experimental
conditions, thermal energy is comparable to the Zeeman splitting. As a result,
thermal excitations between Zeeman sublevels significantly impact the observed
decay. To determine the cross-section ratio accurately, we introduce a model of
Zeeman state dynamics that includes thermal excitations. We find the
cross-section ratio for Ni-3He = 5 x 10^3 and Fe-3He <= 3 x 10^3 at 0.75 K in a
0.8 T magnetic field. These measurements are interpreted in the context of
submerged shell suppression of spin relaxation as studied previously in
transition metals and rare earth atoms.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
