    A Streamwise Constant Model of Turbulence in Plane Couette Flow

    Streamwise and quasi-streamwise elongated structures have been shown to play a significant role in turbulent shear flows. We model the mean behavior of fully turbulent plane Couette flow using a streamwise constant projection of the Navier Stokes equations. This results in a two-dimensional, three velocity component (2D/3C2D/3C) model. We first use a steady state version of the model to demonstrate that its nonlinear coupling provides the mathematical mechanism that shapes the turbulent velocity profile. Simulations of the 2D/3C2D/3C model under small amplitude Gaussian forcing of the cross-stream components are compared to DNS data. The results indicate that a streamwise constant projection of the Navier Stokes equations captures salient features of fully turbulent plane Couette flow at low Reynolds numbers. A system theoretic approach is used to demonstrate the presence of large input-output amplification through the forced 2D/3C2D/3C model. It is this amplification coupled with the appropriate nonlinearity that enables the 2D/3C2D/3C model to generate turbulent behaviour under the small amplitude forcing employed in this study.Comment: Journal of Fluid Mechanics 2010, in pres

    THE CONSISTENCY OF FORCE AND MOVEMENT VARIABLES AS AN INDICATOR OF ROWING PERFORMANCE

    A portable biomechanical collection system was used to test fourteen male, coxless pair rowing crews under simulated race speeds. The data was used to examine if the consistency of 8 biomechanical variables, calculated using a modified Coefficient of Variation (CoV), were related to the overall performance, in terms of velocity, of the crews. It was found that 6 of the variables demonstrated a significant correlation to overall boat speed, with the consistency of Normal Gate Force (r=0.737), Handle Velocity (r=0.758) and Trunk Velocity (r=.757) showing very strong correlation. It was concluded that while not imperative to the outcome, consistency of force application and movement patterns may be important in rowing performance

    Influence of low-level Pr substitution on the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals

    We report on measurements on Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals, with x varying from 0 to 2.4%. The upper and the lower critical fields, Hc2 and Hc1, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter and the critical current density, Jc(B), were determined from magnetization measurements and the effective media approach scaling method. We present the influence of Pr substitution on the pinning force density as well as on the trapped field profiles analyzed by Hall probe scanning.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J.     X-Ray Evidence for Flare Density Variations and Continual Chromospheric Evaporation in Proxima Centauri

    Using the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory to monitor the nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, we recorded the weakest X-ray flares on a magnetically active star ever observed. Correlated X-ray and optical variability provide strong support for coronal energy and mass supply by a nearly continuous sequence of rapid explosive energy releases. Variable emission line fluxes were observed in the He-like triplets of OVII and NeIX during a giant flare. They give direct X-ray evidence for density variations, implying densities between 2x10^{10} - 4x10^{11} cm^{-3} and providing estimates of the mass and the volume of the line-emitting plasma.     Methadone, counselling and literacy: A health literacy partnership for Aboriginal clients

    This paper describes a literacy program delivered at the Kirketon Road Centre (KRC), a primary health centre located at Kings Cross, Sydney. KRC was established to meet the health needs of 'at risk' young people, sex workers, and people who inject drugs. The literacy program was initiated from within an Aboriginal health group at KRC, following a request from clients in the group. A teacher from Tranby Aboriginal College delivered the literacy program once afternoon every fortnight over a period over approximately one year. This paper is based on recorded and transcribed 'reflection' discussion undertaken over several months between the literacy teacher, a KRC counsellor and the researcher immediately following the literacy sessions

    A Simple But Highly Selective Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine

    A modified platinum electrode was fabricated by the electropolymerization of pyrrole using a sodium p-sulphonatocalix[6]arene as the supporting electrolyte. The modified electrode acts as a reasonably sensitive electrochemical sensor for dopamine giving a linear calibration curve in the range 0.075 – 1.00 mM dopamine. The sensor shows no ability to sense the common interferent ascorbic acid, therefore the concentration for dopamine can be directly sensed in a large excess of ascorbic acid with no need to make adjustments for the signal for ascorbic acid.
