Battery cell thermal-conductive coating increases efficiency
Thin coating of high-temperature epoxy resin provides necessary electrical insulation, as well as good thermal conductivity between battery cells. Insulation increases efficiency of nickel-cadmium battery, as it would any multicell battery assembly in which cell-to-cell thermal balance is critical
A new bound of the ℒ2[0, T]-induced norm and applications to model reduction
We present a simple bound on the finite horizon ℒ2/[0, T]-induced norm of a linear time-invariant (LTI), not necessarily stable system which can be efficiently computed by calculating the ℋ∞ norm of a shifted version of the original operator. As an application, we show how to use this bound to perform model reduction of unstable systems over a finite horizon. The technique is illustrated with a non-trivial physical example relevant to the appearance of time-irreversible phenomena in statistical physics
Kramers-Kronig, Bode, and the meaning of zero
The implications of causality, as captured by the Kramers-Kronig relations
between the real and imaginary parts of a linear response function, are
familiar parts of the physics curriculum. In 1937, Bode derived a similar
relation between the magnitude (response gain) and phase. Although the
Kramers-Kronig relations are an equality, Bode's relation is effectively an
inequality. This perhaps-surprising difference is explained using elementary
examples and ultimately traces back to delays in the flow of information within
the system formed by the physical object and measurement apparatus.Comment: 8 pages; American Journal of Physics, to appea
Eigenvalues of the 2p3pP3 and 2p3dD1,3 bound states of the helium isoelectronic sequence
The 1Z expansion method is used to calculate the eigenvalues of the 2p3pP3 and 2p3dD1,3 states of the helium isoelectronic sequence. The results are compared to variational calculations for neutral helium. Wavelengths are predicted for a number of transitions originating in doubly excited states of the heliumlike ions up to Fe xxv. The results for neutral helium are compared to recent beam-foil experiments and alternative line identifications are made. The predicted wavelength for the 2p3dD3-2p2P3 transition is 3014, in close agreement with the line observed by Berry et al. at 3012 ± 2. © 1972 The American Physical Society
Collisional properties of cold spin-polarized nitrogen gas: theory, experiment, and prospects as a sympathetic coolant for trapped atoms and molecules
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of collision-induced
dipolar relaxation in a cold spin-polarized gas of atomic nitrogen (N). We use
buffer gas cooling to create trapped samples of 14N and 15N atoms with
densities 5+/-2 x 10^{12} cm-3 and measure their magnetic relaxation rates at
milli-Kelvin temperatures. Rigorous quantum scattering calculations based on
accurate ab initio interaction potentials for the 7Sigma_u electronic state of
N2 demonstrate that dipolar relaxation in N + N collisions occurs at a slow
rate of ~10^{-13} cm3/s over a wide range of temperatures (1 mK to 1 K) and
magnetic fields (10 mT to 2 T). The calculated dipolar relaxation rates are
insensitive to small variations of the interaction potential and to the
magnitude of the spin-exchange interaction, enabling the accurate calibration
of the measured N atom density. We find consistency between the calculated and
experimentally determined rates. Our results suggest that N atoms are promising
candidates for future experiments on sympathetic cooling of molecules.Comment: 48 pages, 17 figures, 3 table
