    Zero-Gravity Vortex Vent and PVT Gaging System

    Space Station and satellite reservicing will require the ability to vent gas on orbit from liquid supply or storage tanks and to gage liquid quantity under microgravity conditions. In zero gravity, (zero-g) the vortex vent is capable of venting gas from a tank of liquid containing gas randomly distributed as bubbles. The concept uses a spinning impeller to create centrifugal force inside a vortex tube within a tank. This creates a gas pocket and forces the liquid through a venturi and back into the tank. Gas is then vented from the gas pocket through a liquid detector and then out through an exhaust port. If the liquid detector senses liquid in the vent line, the fluid is directed to the low-pressure port on the venturi and is returned to the tank. The advantages of this system is that it has no rotating seals and is compatible with most corrosive and cryogenic fluids. A prototype was designed and built at the NASA Johnson Space Center and flown on the KC-135 zero-g aircraft. During these test flights, where microgravity conditions are obtained for up to 30 sec, the prototype demonstrated that less than 0.10 percent of the volume of fluid vented was liquid when the tank was half full of liquid. The pressure volume temperature (PVT) gaging system is used in conjunction with the vortex vent to calculate the amount of liquid remaining in a tank under microgravity conditions. The PVT gaging system is used in conjunction with the vortex vent to gage liquid quantity in zero or low gravity. The system consists of a gas compressor, accumulator, and temperature and pressure instrumentation. To measure the liquid in a tank a small amount of gas is vented from the tank to the compressor and compressed into the accumulator. Pressure and temperature in the tank and accumulator are measured before and after the gas transfer occurs. Knowing the total volume of the tank, the volume of the accumulator, the volume of the intermediate lines, and initial and final pressures and temperatures, the mass of the gas leaving the tank is equated to the mass of the gas entering the accumulator. The volume of liquid remaining in the tank is calculated using the ideal gas law

    Tracking Control for FES-Cycling based on Force Direction Efficiency with Antagonistic Bi-Articular Muscles

    A functional electrical stimulation (FES)-based tracking controller is developed to enable cycling based on a strategy to yield force direction efficiency by exploiting antagonistic bi-articular muscles. Given the input redundancy naturally occurring among multiple muscle groups, the force direction at the pedal is explicitly determined as a means to improve the efficiency of cycling. A model of a stationary cycle and rider is developed as a closed-chain mechanism. A strategy is then developed to switch between muscle groups for improved efficiency based on the force direction of each muscle group.     Refining the scope in computer self-efficacy relationships: an empirical comparison of three instruments in predicting competence and attitudes

    Computer self-efficacy (CSE) has been successfully used in many studies as a significant predictor of individual performance and attitudes. However there have been ongoing criticisms concerning selfefficacy’s conceptual foundations as well as its measurement. In the IS field, there have been a number of studies in which the relationship between CSE and consequent behaviors or attitudes was weak or nonexistent. Reasons given for such results include problems associated with the construct of general selfefficacy, and more recently the mismatching of scope (general or specific) between self-efficacy and its predicted outcomes. Little research exists in the IS field to ascertain which instrument is appropriate given the circumstances of the study or to determine if scope plays a significant role in predictability. This study examines three CSE instruments, one general, one global, and one specific (in six domains) in their ability to predict specific and general outcomes (competence and attitudes). The CSE instruments are empirically compared using a sample of 310 ROTC Midshipmen from fourteen universities, using six common computing domains. Results suggest that instrument choice makes a significant difference in predictability and that the alignment in scope of CSE with outcomes is moderated by task mastery in that domain

    Stationary Cycling Induced by Switched Functional Electrical Stimulation Control

    Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is used to activate the dysfunctional lower limb muscles of individuals with neuromuscular disorders to produce cycling as a means of exercise and rehabilitation. However, FES-cycling is still metabolically inefficient and yields low power output at the cycle crank compared to able-bodied cycling. Previous literature suggests that these problems are symptomatic of poor muscle control and non-physiological muscle fiber recruitment. The latter is a known problem with FES in general, and the former motivates investigation of better control methods for FES-cycling.In this paper, a stimulation pattern for quadriceps femoris-only FES-cycling is derived based on the effectiveness of knee joint torque in producing forward pedaling. In addition, a switched sliding-mode controller is designed for the uncertain, nonlinear cycle-rider system with autonomous state-dependent switching. The switched controller yields ultimately bounded tracking of a desired trajectory in the presence of an unknown, time-varying, bounded disturbance, provided a reverse dwell-time condition is satisfied by appropriate choice of the control gains and a sufficient desired cadence. Stability is derived through Lyapunov methods for switched systems, and experimental results demonstrate the performance of the switched control system under typical cycling conditions.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ACC 201

    Parameterized Algorithms for Graph Partitioning Problems

    We study a broad class of graph partitioning problems, where each problem is specified by a graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E), and parameters kk and pp. We seek a subset U⊆VU\subseteq V of size kk, such that α1m1+α2m2\alpha_1m_1 + \alpha_2m_2 is at most (or at least) pp, where α1,α2∈R\alpha_1,\alpha_2\in\mathbb{R} are constants defining the problem, and m1,m2m_1, m_2 are the cardinalities of the edge sets having both endpoints, and exactly one endpoint, in UU, respectively. This class of fixed cardinality graph partitioning problems (FGPP) encompasses Max (k,n−k)(k,n-k)-Cut, Min kk-Vertex Cover, kk-Densest Subgraph, and kk-Sparsest Subgraph. Our main result is an O∗(4k+o(k)Δk)O^*(4^{k+o(k)}\Delta^k) algorithm for any problem in this class, where Δ≥1\Delta \geq 1 is the maximum degree in the input graph. This resolves an open question posed by Bonnet et al. [IPEC 2013]. We obtain faster algorithms for certain subclasses of FGPPs, parameterized by pp, or by (k+p)(k+p). In particular, we give an O∗(4p+o(p))O^*(4^{p+o(p)}) time algorithm for Max (k,n−k)(k,n-k)-Cut, thus improving significantly the best known O∗(pp)O^*(p^p) time algorithm
