An Invisible Quantum Tripwire
We present here a quantum tripwire, which is a quantum optical interrogation
technique capable of detecting an intrusion with very low probability of the
tripwire being revealed to the intruder. Our scheme combines interaction-free
measurement with the quantum Zeno effect in order to interrogate the presence
of the intruder without interaction. The tripwire exploits a curious nonlinear
behaviour of the quantum Zeno effect we discovered, which occurs in a lossy
system. We also employ a statistical hypothesis testing protocol, allowing us
to calculate a confidence level of interaction-free measurement after a given
number of trials. As a result, our quantum intruder alert system is robust
against photon loss and dephasing under realistic atmospheric conditions and
its design minimizes the probabilities of false positives and false negatives
as well as the probability of becoming visible to the intruder.Comment: Improved based on reviewers comments; 5 figure
Quantum Clock Synchronization Based on Shared Prior Entanglement
We demonstrate that two spatially separated parties (Alice and Bob) can
utilize shared prior quantum entanglement, and classical communications, to
establish a synchronized pair of atomic clocks. In contrast to classical
synchronization schemes, the accuracy of our protocol is independent of Alice
or Bob's knowledge of their relative locations or of the properties of the
intervening medium.Comment: 4 page
Hubble Space Telescope Planetary Camera Images of NGC 1316
We present HST Planetary Camera V and I~band images of the central region of
the peculiar giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316. The inner profile is well fit by
a nonisothermal core model with a core radius of 0.41" +/- 0.02" (34 pc). At an
assumed distance of 16.9 Mpc, the deprojected luminosity density reaches \sim
2.0 \times 10^3 L_{\sun} pc.
Outside the inner two or three arcseconds, a constant mass-to-light ratio of
is found to fit the observed line width measurements. The
line width measurements of the center indicate the existence of either a
central dark object of mass 2 \times 10^9 M_{\sun}, an increase in the
stellar mass-to-light ratio by at least a factor of two for the inner few
arcseconds, or perhaps increasing radial orbit anisotropy towards the center.
The mass-to-light ratio run in the center of NGC 1316 resembles that of many
other giant ellipticals, some of which are known from other evidence to harbor
central massive dark objects (MDO's).
We also examine twenty globular clusters associated with NGC 1316 and report
their brightnesses, colors, and limits on tidal radii. The brightest cluster
has a luminosity of 9.9 \times 10^6 L_{\sun} (), and the
faintest detectable cluster has a luminosity of 2.4 \times 10^5 L_{\sun}
(). The globular clusters are just barely resolved, but their core
radii are too small to be measured. The tidal radii in this region appear to be
35 pc. Although this galaxy seems to have undergone a substantial merger
in the recent past, young globular clusters are not detected.Comment: 21 pages, latex, postscript figures available at

Cardiomyopathy in Offspring of Pregestational Diabetic Mouse Pregnancy
Purpose. To investigate cardiomyopathy in offspring in a mouse model of pregestational type 1 diabetic pregnancy. Methods. Pregestational diabetes was induced with STZ administration in female C57BL6/J mice that were subsequently mated with healthy C57BL6/J males. Offspring were sacrificed at embryonic day 18.5 and 6-week adolescent and 12-week adult stages. The size and number of cardiomyocyte nuclei and also the extent of collagen deposition within the hearts of diabetic and control offspring were assessed following cardiac tissue staining with either haematoxylin and eosin or Picrosirius red and subsequently quantified using automated digital image analysis. Results. Offspring from diabetic mice at embryonic day 18.5 had a significantly higher number of cardiomyocyte nuclei present compared to controls. These nuclei were also significantly smaller than controls. Collagen deposition was shown to be significantly increased in the hearts of diabetic offspring at the same age. No significant differences were found between the groups at 6 and 12 weeks. Conclusions. Our results from offspring of type 1 diabetic mice show increased myocardial collagen deposition in late gestation and have increased myocardial nuclear counts (hyperplasia) as opposed to increased myocardial nuclear size (hypertrophy) in late gestation. These changes normalize postpartum after removal from the maternal intrauterine environment
7-Carboxy-7-deazaguanine Synthase: A Radical
Radical S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) enzymes are widely distributed and catalyze diverse reactions. SAM binds to the unique iron atom of a site-differentiated [4Fe-4S] cluster and is reductively cleaved to generate a 5'-deoxyadenosyl radical, which initiates turnover. 7-Carboxy-7-deazaguanine (CDG) synthase (QueE) catalyzes a key step in the biosynthesis of 7-deazapurine containing natural products. 6-Carboxypterin (6-CP), an oxidized analogue of the natural substrate 6-carboxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin (CPH4), is shown to be an alternate substrate for CDG synthase. Under reducing conditions that would promote the reductive cleavage of SAM, 6-CP is turned over to 6-deoxyadenosylpterin (6-dAP), presumably by radical addition of the 5'-deoxyadenosine followed by oxidative decarboxylation to the product. By contrast, in the absence of the strong reductant, dithionite, the carboxylate of 6-CP is esterified to generate 6-carboxypterin-5'-deoxyadenosyl ester (6-CP-dAdo ester). Structural studies with 6-CP and SAM also reveal electron density consistent with the ester product being formed in crystallo. The differential reactivity of 6-CP under reducing and nonreducing conditions highlights the ability of radical SAM enzymes to carry out both polar and radical transformations in the same active site

Paper Spray Ionization: Applications and Perspectives
Paper spray ionization has grown to become one of the most successful ambient ionization methods within the past decade. Requiring little to no sample preparation and being remarkably simple to construct, this technique has seen application in a wide number of fields. This review approaches the mechanism of how paper spray works, and seeks to better classify what it is and is not in a rapidly expanding field of ambient techniques. Additionally, many applications of the technique in clinical, forensic, environmental, and reaction monitoring regimes are explored. Finally, perspectives towards the future of how paper spray could be utilized will be expanded upon, including unexplored substrates and possibilities for the 'omics space
Quantum Interferometric Optical Lithography: Exploiting Entanglement to Beat The Diffraction Limit
Classical, interferometric, optical lithography is diffraction limited to
writing features of a size lambda/2 or greater, where lambda is the optical
wavelength. Using nonclassical photon number states, entangled N at a time, we
show that it is possible to write features of minimum size lambda/(2N) in an
N-photon absorbing substrate. This result surpasses the usual classical
diffraction limit by a factor of N. Since the number of features that can be
etched on a two-dimensional surface scales inversely as the square of the
feature size, this allows one to write a factor of N^2 more elements on a
semiconductor chip. A factor of N = 2 can be achieved easily with entangled
photon pairs generated from optical parametric downconversion. It is shown how
to write arbitrary 2D patterns by using this method.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
