The Wellbeing of International Students in the City of Sydney
The City of Sydney engaged UTS:IPPG to undertake explorative research into the wellbeing of international students in the City of Sydney Local Government Area (LGA). The central aim of this research is the investigation of how international students living and/or studying in the City area perceive their wellbeing and what does and does not contribute towards their wellbeing. A review of key literature identified the following key focus areas that contributed to the wellbeing of international students
Coating for gasifiable carbon-graphite fibers
A thin, uniform, firmly adherent coating of metal gasification catalyst is applied to a carbon-graphite fiber by first coating the fiber with a film-forming polymer containing functional moieties capable of reaction with the catalytic metal ions. Multivalent metal cations such as calcium cross-link the polymer such as a polyacrylic acid to insolubilize the film by forming catalytic metal macro-salt links between adjacent polymer chains. The coated fibers are used as reinforcement for resin composites and will gasify upon combustion without evolving conductive airborne fragments

Access to shops: The views of low-income shoppers
Concern is mounting as the retail stranglehold upon access to food grows. Research on the implications of restructuring retailing and health inequality has failed to involve low-income consumers in this debate. This paper reports on an exercise conducted for the UK Government's, Social Exclusion Unit's Policy Action Team on Access to Shops. The survey provides a useful baseline of the views of low-income groups in England. The choices that people on low income can make were found to be dominated by certain factors such as income and, most importantly, transport. Consumers reported varying levels of satisfaction with retail provision. The findings suggest gaps between what people have, what they want and what the planning process does and does not offer them. Better policy and processes are needed to include and represent the interests of low-income groups
Observatory/data centre partnerships and the VO-centric archive: The JCMT Science Archive experience
We present, as a case study, a description of the partnership between an
observatory (JCMT) and a data centre (CADC) that led to the development of the
JCMT Science Archive (JSA). The JSA is a successful example of a service
designed to use Virtual Observatory (VO) technologies from the start. We

Fabrication of imaging microstructured optical fibers
We demonstrate the fabrication of multi-core (imaging) microstructured optical fiber via soft-glass extrusion through a 3D printed die. The combination of 3D metal printing and extrusion allows for unprecedented control of the optical fiber geometry. We have exploited this to demonstrate a 100 pixel rectangular array imaging microstructured fiber. Due to the high refractive index of the glass used (n = 1.62), such a fiber can theoretically have a pixel pitch of less than 2 μm. This opens opportunities for ultra-small, high-resolution imaging fibers fabricated from diverse glass types.Stephen C. Warren-Smith, Alastair Dowler, Heike Ebendorff-Heideprie
Cloud access to interoperable IVOA-compliant VOSpace storage
Handling, processing and archiving the huge amount of data produced by the new generation of experiments and instruments in Astronomy and Astrophysics are among the more exciting challenges to address in designing the future data management infrastructures and computing services. We investigated the feasibility of a data management and computation infrastructure, available world-wide, with the aim of merging the FAIR data management
provided by IVOA standards with the efficiency and reliability of a cloud approach. Our work involved the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomy
Research (CANFAR) infrastructure and the European EGI federated cloud
(EFC). We designed and deployed a pilot data management and computation
infrastructure that provides IVOA-compliant VOSpace storage resources and
wide access to interoperable federated clouds. In this paper, we detail the
main user requirements covered, the technical choices and the implemented
solutions and we describe the resulting Hybrid cloud Worldwide infrastructure, its benefits and limitation

Access to healthy foods: Part I. Barriers to accessing healthy foods: Differentials by gender, social class, income and mode of transport
This paper examines the issues of access to food and the influences people face when shopping for a healthy food basket. It uses data from the Health Edu cation Authority's 1993 Health and Lifestyles Survey to examine the barriers people face in accessing a healthy diet. The main findings are that access to food is primarily determined by income, and this is in turn closely related to physical resources available to access healthy food. There is an associated class bias over access to sources of healthy food. The poor have less access to a car, find it harder to get to out-of-town shopping centres and thus are less able to carry and transport food in bulk. The majority of people shop in supermarkets as they report that local shops do not provide the services people demand and that food choice and quality are limited. In tackling food poverty and pro moting healthy eating, health promotion practice needs to address these struc tural issues as opposed to relying on psycho-social models of education based on the provision of information and choice
