Floodlight Quantum Key Distribution: A Practical Route to Gbps Secret-Key Rates
The channel loss incurred in long-distance transmission places a significant
burden on quantum key distribution (QKD) systems: they must defeat a passive
eavesdropper who detects all the light lost in the quantum channel and does so
without disturbing the light that reaches the intended destination. The current
QKD implementation with the highest long-distance secret-key rate meets this
challenge by transmitting no more than one photon per bit [Opt. Express 21,
24550-24565 (2013)]. As a result, it cannot achieve the Gbps secret-key rate
needed for one-time pad encryption of large data files unless an impractically
large amount of multiplexing is employed. We introduce floodlight QKD (FL-QKD),
which floods the quantum channel with a high number of photons per bit
distributed over a much greater number of optical modes. FL-QKD offers security
against the optimum frequency-domain collective attack by transmitting less
than one photon per mode and using photon-coincidence channel monitoring, and
it is completely immune to passive eavesdropping. More importantly, FL-QKD is
capable of a 2 Gbps secret-key rate over a 50 km fiber link, without any
multiplexing, using available equipment, i.e., no new technology need be
developed. FL-QKD achieves this extraordinary secret-key rate by virtue of its
unprecedented secret-key efficiency, in bits per channel use, which exceeds
those of state-of-the-art systems by two orders of magnitude.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

Public Feminisms: From Academy to Community
The field of feminist studies grew from the U.S. women’s movements of the 1960s and 1970s and has continued to be deeply connected to ongoing movements for social justice. As educational institutions are increasingly seeing public scholarship and community engagement as relevant and fruitful complements to traditional academic work, feminist scholars have much to offer in demonstrating different ways to inform and interact with various communities. In this collection, a diverse range of feminist scholar-activists write about the dynamic and varied methods they use to reach beyond traditional classrooms and scholarly journals to share their work with the public. Here is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning and importance of community engagement and to archive some of the important public-facing work feminists are doing today. Grid computing and molecular simulations: the vision of the eMinerals Project
This paper discusses a number of aspects of using grid computing methods in support of molecular simulations, with examples drawn from the eMinerals project. A number of components for a useful grid infrastructure are discussed, including the integration of compute and data grids, automatic metadata capture from simulation studies, interoperability of data between simulation codes, management of data and data accessibility, management of jobs and workflow, and tools to support collaboration. Use of a grid infrastructure also brings certain challenges, which are discussed. These include making use of boundless computing resources, the necessary changes, and the need to be able to manage experimentation
Angola Cameia Development Casing-Settlement Calculations
The amount of axial settlement of casings supported by regions of axial elastic foundations is computed. The differential equation of axial equilibrium, including the foundation stiffnesses, is solved by use of cubic axial finite elements. The analysis is applied to 101 m of a vertical 914-mm (36-in.) casing supporting a 559-mm (22-in.) casing running from 3 m above the mudline to near the bottom of the 1201-m hole. The upper casing is supported by a region of layered clay sediments. The lower casing has a long openhole region, followed by a bottom region encased in cement. A series of loading increments is applied, with the connection of the tree/blowout preventer (BOP) as the last. The settlement at the mudline was calculated to be less than 0.1 m. This study shows that for weak upper foundations, a good cement job is needed to support the tree/BOP without large mudline settlements
