On the pattern of Casimir scaling violation in gluodynamics
Results of lattice analysis indicate that the static potential in SU(3) gauge
theory is proportional to eigenvalue of quadratic Casimir operator for the
corresponding representation with a good accuracy. We discuss the mechanism of
possible deviations from the Casimir scaling in gluodynamics in terms of
correlators of path-ordered gauge-invariant operators defined on the worldsheet
of the confining string.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, no figure
Stimulant Medication and Reading Performance
The study examined the sustained effects of methylphenidate on reading performance in a sample of 42 boys, ages 8 to 11, with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Two subgroups were formed based on the presence or absence of co-occurring conduct disorders. Subjects were selected on the basis of their positive response to methylphenidate as determined in a series of original medication trials (Forness, Cantwell, Swanson, Hanna, & Youpa, 1991). For the purpose of this study, subjects were placed on their optimal dose of medication for a 6-week period and then tested on measures of oral reading and reading comprehension equivalent to those used in the original trials, retested after a week without medication (placebo), then tested again the following week after return to medication. Only the subgroup with conduct disorders responded, and this response was limited to reading comprehension improvement in only those subjects who also demonstrated improvement in oral reading on original trials. No response differences were found between subjects with or without learning disabilities.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68569/2/10.1177_002221949202500205.pd
Duality symmetry for star products
A duality property for star products is exhibited. In view of it, known
star-product schemes, like the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism, the Husimi and the
Glauber-Sudarshan maps are revisited and their dual partners elucidated. The
tomographic map, which has been recently described as yet another star product
scheme, is considered. It yields a noncommutative algebra of operator symbols
which are positive definite probability distributions. Through the duality
symmetry a new noncommutative algebra of operator symbols is found, equipped
with a new star product. The kernel of the new star product is established in
explicit form and examples are considered.Comment: 14 pages, no figure
The Fuzzy Sphere: From The Uncertainty Relation To The Stereographic Projection
On the fuzzy sphere, no state saturates simultaneously all the Heisenberg
uncertainties. We propose a weaker uncertainty for which this holds. The family
of states so obtained is physically motivated because it encodes information
about positions in this fuzzy context. In particular, these states realize in a
natural way a deformation of the stereographic projection. Surprisingly, in the
large limit, they reproduce some properties of the ordinary coherent states
on the non commutative plane.Comment: 18 pages, Latex. Minor changes in notations. Version to appear in

Algebraic Structures and Eigenstates for Integrable Collective Field Theories
Conditions for the construction of polynomial eigen--operators for the
Hamiltonian of collective string field theories are explored. Such
eigen--operators arise for only one monomial potential in the
collective field theory. They form a --algebra isomorphic to the
algebra of vertex operators in 2d gravity. Polynomial potentials of orders only
strictly larger or smaller than 2 have no non--zero--energy polynomial
eigen--operators. This analysis leads us to consider a particular potential
. A Lie algebra of polynomial eigen--operators is then
constructed for this potential. It is a symmetric 2--index Lie algebra, also
represented as a sub--algebra of Comment: 27 page
Categorizing Different Approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem
We have found that proposals addressing the old cosmological constant problem
come in various categories. The aim of this paper is to identify as many
different, credible mechanisms as possible and to provide them with a code for
future reference. We find that they all can be classified into five different
schemes of which we indicate the advantages and drawbacks.
Besides, we add a new approach based on a symmetry principle mapping real to
imaginary spacetime.Comment: updated version, accepted for publicatio

Mean response times, variability, and skew in the responding of ADHD children: A response time distributional approach
Response time (RT) distributions from three fixed foreperiod conditions (2, 4, and 8 s) in a warned four-choice RT task were obtained for a group of boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, combined type (ADHD; n = 17) and for two groups of normal control boys (age-matched, n = 18, and younger-aged, n = 10). Quantitative measures of distributional shape were derived by fitting the ex-Gaussian distributional model to the individual RT data. Statistical results indicate that the ADHD distributions differ from the age-matched control distributions with respect to the size of the tail (larger for the ADHD boys), but differ from the younger control distributions with respect to the location of the leading edge (slower for the younger control boys). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) results reveal that the ex-Gaussian exponential component is highly diagnostic of the ADHD boys
