An Empirical Examination of Symptom Substitution Associated with Behavior Therapy for Tourette\u27s Disorder
Over the past six decades, behavior therapy has been a major contributor to the development of evidence-based psychotherapy treatments. However, a long-standing concern with behavior therapy among many nonbehavioral clinicians has been the potential risk for symptom substitution. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate symptom substitution in response to behavioral treatments, largely due to measurement and definitional challenges associated with treated psychiatric symptoms. Given the overt motor and vocal tics associated with Touretteâs disorder, it presents an excellent opportunity to empirically evaluate the potential risk for symptom substitution associated with behavior therapy. The present study examined the possible presence of symptom substitution using four methods: (a) the onset of new tic symptoms, (b) the occurrence of adverse events, (c) change in tic medications, and (d) worsening of co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. Two hundred twenty-eight participants with Touretteâs disorder or persistent motor or vocal tic disorders were randomly assigned to receive behavioral therapy or supportive therapy for tics. Both therapies consisted of eight sessions over 10 weeks. Results indicated that participants treated with behavior therapy were not more likely to have an onset of new tic symptoms, experience adverse events, increase tic medications, or have an exacerbation in co-occurring psychiatric symptoms relative to participants treated with supportive therapy. Further analysis suggested that the emergence of new tics was attributed with the normal waxing and waning nature of Touretteâs disorder. Findings provide empirical support to counter the long-standing concern of symptom substitution in response to behavior therapy for individuals with Tourette\u27s disorder
A Nuclear DNA Perspective on Delineating Evolutionarily Significant Lineages in Polyploids: The Case of the Endangered Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum)
The shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum, oft considered a phylogenetic relic, is listed as an âendangered species threatened with extinctionâ in the US and âVulnerableâ on the IUCN Red List. Effective conservation of A. brevirostrum depends on understanding its diversity and evolutionary processes, yet challenges associated with the polyploid nature of its nuclear genome have heretofore limited population genetic analysis to maternally inherited haploid characters. We developed a suite of polysomic microsatellite DNA markers and characterized a sample of 561 shortnose sturgeon collected from major extant populations along the North American Atlantic coast. The 181 alleles observed at 11 loci were scored as binary loci and the data were subjected to multivariate ordination, Bayesian clustering, hierarchical partitioning of variance, and among-population distance metric tests. The methods uncovered moderately high levels of gene diversity suggesting population structuring across and within three metapopulations (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast) that encompass seven demographically discrete and evolutionarily distinct lineages. The predicted groups are consistent with previously described behavioral patterns, especially dispersal and migration, supporting the interpretation that A. brevirostrum exhibit adaptive differences based on watershed. Combined with results of prior genetic (mitochondrial DNA) and behavioral studies, the current work suggests that dispersal is an important factor in maintaining genetic diversity in A. brevirostrum and that the basic unit for conservation management is arguably the local population

Reversal of β cell de-differentiation by a small molecule inhibitor of the TGFβ pathway
Dysfunction or death of pancreatic β cells underlies both types of diabetes. This functional decline begins with β cell stress and de-differentiation. Current drugs for type 2 diabetes (T2D) lower blood glucose levels but they do not directly alleviate β cell stress nor prevent, let alone reverse, β cell de-differentiation. We show here that Urocortin 3 (Ucn3), a marker for mature β cells, is down-regulated in the early stages of T2D in mice and when β cells are stressed in vitro. Using an insulin expression-coupled lineage tracer, with Ucn3 as a reporter for the mature β cell state, we screen for factors that reverse β cell de-differentiation. We find that a small molecule inhibitor of TGFβ receptor I (Alk5) protects cells from the loss of key β cell transcription factors and restores a mature β cell identity even after exposure to prolonged and severe diabetes. A comprehensive study of GRB 070125, a most energetic gamma ray burst
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength analysis of the bright, long
duration gamma-ray burst GRB 070125, comprised of observations in -ray,
X-ray, optical, millimeter and centimeter wavebands. Simultaneous fits to the
optical and X-ray light curves favor a break on day 3.78, which we interpret as
the jet break from a collimated outflow. Independent fits to optical and X-ray
bands give similar results in the optical bands but shift the jet break to
around day 10 in the X-ray light curve. We show that for the physical
parameters derived for GRB 070125, inverse Compton scattering effects are
important throughout the afterglow evolution. While inverse Compton scattering
does not affect radio and optical bands, it may be a promising candidate to
delay the jet break in the X-ray band. Radio light curves show rapid flux
variations, which are interpreted as due to interstellar scintillation, and are
used to derive an upper limit of cm on the radius of the
fireball in the lateral expansion phase of the jet. Radio light curves and
spectra suggest a high synchrotron self absorption frequency indicative of the
afterglow shock wave moving in a dense medium. Our broadband modeling favors a
constant density profile for the circumburst medium over a wind-like profile
(). However, keeping in mind the uncertainty of the parameters, it is
difficult to unambiguously distinguish between the two density profiles. Our
broadband fits suggest that \event is a burst with high radiative efficiency

Salivary Gland Hypofunction and/or Xerostomia Induced by Nonsurgical Cancer Therapies:ISOO/MASCC/ASCO Guideline
PURPOSE: To provide evidence-based recommendations for prevention and management of salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia induced by nonsurgical cancer therapies. METHODS: Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO) and ASCO convened a multidisciplinary Expert Panel to evaluate the evidence and formulate recommendations. PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials published between January 2009 and June 2020. The guideline also incorporated two previous systematic reviews conducted by MASCC/ISOO, which included studies published from 1990 through 2008. RESULTS: A total of 58 publications were identified: 46 addressed preventive interventions and 12 addressed therapeutic interventions. A majority of the evidence focused on the setting of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. For the prevention of salivary gland hypofunction and/or xerostomia in patients with head and neck cancer, there is high-quality evidence for tissue-sparing radiation modalities. Evidence is weaker or insufficient for other interventions. For the management of salivary gland hypofunction and/or xerostomia, intermediate-quality evidence supports the use of topical mucosal lubricants, saliva substitutes, and agents that stimulate the salivary reflex. RECOMMENDATIONS: For patients who receive radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, tissue-sparing radiation modalities should be used when possible to reduce the risk of salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia. Other risk-reducing interventions that may be offered during radiation therapy for head and neck cancer include bethanechol and acupuncture. For patients who develop salivary gland hypofunction and/or xerostomia, interventions include topical mucosal lubricants, saliva substitutes, and sugar-free lozenges or chewing gum. For patients with head and neck cancer, oral pilocarpine and oral cevimeline, acupuncture, or transcutaneous electrostimulation may be offered after radiation therapy.Additional information can be found at www.asco.org/supportive-care-guidelines
Steps toward Determination of the Size and Structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XII. Ground-Based Monitoring of 3C 390.3
Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on 3C 390.3 in 1994-95
are presented. The broad-band fluxes (B, V, R, and I), the spectrophotometric
optical continuum flux F(5177) and the integrated emission-line fluxes of Ha,
Hb, Hg, HeI, and HeII all show a nearly monotonic increase with episodes of
milder short-term variations superposed. The amplitude of the continuum
variations increases with decreasing wavelength (4400-9000 A). The optical
continuum variations follow the variations in the ultraviolet and X-ray with
time delays, measured from the centroids of the cross- correlation functions,
typically around 5 days, but with uncertainties also typically around 5 days;
zero time delay between the high-energy and low-energy continuum variations
cannot be ruled out. The strong optical emission lines Ha, Hb, Hg, and HeI
respond to the high-energy continuum variations with time delays typically
about 20 days, with uncertainties of about 8 days. There is some evidence that
HeII responds somewhat more rapidly, with a time delay of around 10 days, but
again, the uncertainties are quite large (~8 days). The mean and rms spectra of
the Ha and Hb line profiles provide indications for the existence of at least
three distinct components located at +-4000 and 0 km/s relative to the line

Mitochondrial Data in Monocot Phylologenetics
Mitochondrial sequences are an important source of data in animal phylogenetics, equivalent in importance to plastid sequences in plants. However, in recent years plant systematists have begun exploring the mitochondrial genome as a source of phylogenetically useful characters. The plant mitochondrial genome is renowned for its variability in size, structure, and gene organization, but this need not be of concern for the application of sequence data in phylogenetics. However, the incorporation of reverse transcribed mitochondrial genes ( processed paralogs ) and the recurring transfer of genes from the mitochondrion to the nucleus are evolutionary events that must be taken into account. RNA editing of mitochondrial genes is sometimes considered a problem in phylogenetic reconstruction, but we regard it only as a mechanism that may increase variability at edited sites and change the codon position bias accordingly. Additionally, edited sites may prove a valuable tool in identifying processed paralogs. An overview of genes and sequences used in phylogenetic studies of angiosperms is presented. In the monocots, a large amount of mitochondrial sequence data is being collected together with sequence data from plastid and nuclear genes, thus offering an opportunity to compare data from different genomic compartments. The mitochondrial and plastid data are incongruent when organelle gene trees are reconstructed. Possible reasons for the observed incongruence involve sampling of paralogous sequences and highly divergent substitution rates, potentially leading to longbranch attraction. Induced pseudoscalar coupling of the proton weak interaction
The induced pseudoscalar coupling is the least well known of the weak
coupling constants of the proton's charged--current interaction. Its size is
dictated by chiral symmetry arguments, and its measurement represents an
important test of quantum chromodynamics at low energies. During the past
decade a large body of new data relevant to the coupling has been
accumulated. This data includes measurements of radiative and non radiative
muon capture on targets ranging from hydrogen and few--nucleon systems to
complex nuclei. Herein the authors review the theoretical underpinnings of
, the experimental studies of , and the procedures and uncertainties
in extracting the coupling from data. Current puzzles are highlighted and
