We haven't got a seat on the bus for you or All the seats are mine: Narratives and career transitions in professional golf
In this article we explore how the stories an athlete tells throughout life in sport affect her career transition experiences. We base our enquiry on a social constructionist conception of narrative theory which holds that storytelling is integral to the creation and maintenance of identity and sense of self. Life stories were gathered through interviews with two professional women golfers (Christiana and Kandy) over a sixâyear period. Through a narrative analysis of structure and form we explored each participantâs stories of living in and withdrawing from professional golf. We suggest Christiana told monological performanceâoriented stories which, while aligning with the culture of elite sport, resulted in an exclusive athletic identity and foreclosure of alternative selves and roles. On withdrawal, Christiana experienced narrative wreckage, identity collapse, mental health difficulties and considerable psychological trauma. In contrast, Kandy told dialogical discoveryâoriented stories which, while being in tension with the dominant performance narrative, created and sustained a multidimensional identity and self. Her stories and identity remained intact, authentic and continuous on withdrawal from tournament golf and she experienced few psychological problems
Reverse geometric engineering of singularities
One can geometrically engineer supersymmetric field theories theories by
placing D-branes at or near singularities. The opposite process is described,
where one can reconstruct the singularities from quiver theories. The
description is in terms of a noncommutative quiver algebra which is constructed
from the quiver diagram and the superpotential. The center of this
noncommutative algebra is a commutative algebra, which is the ring of
holomorphic functions on a variety V. If certain algebraic conditions are met,
then the reverse geometric engineering produces V as the geometry that D-branes
probe. It is also argued that the identification of V is invariant under
Seiberg dualities.Comment: 17 pages, Latex. v2: updates reference

MODELLING THE ELECTRON WITH COSSERAT ELASTICITY
Interactions between a finite number of bodies and the surrounding fluid, in a channel for instance, are investigated theoretically. In the planar model here the bodies or modelled grains are thin solid bodies free to move in a nearly parallel formation within a quasi-inviscid fluid. The investigation involves numerical and analytical studies and comparisons. The three main features that appear are a linear instability about a state of uniform motion, a clashing of the bodies (or of a body with a side wall) within a finite scaled time when nonlinear interaction takes effect, and a continuum-limit description of the bodyâfluid interaction holding for the case of many bodies

. A companion survey provides an introduction to the theory
of Hilbert modules and some (Hilbert) module point of view to multivariable
operator theory. The purpose of this survey is to emphasize algebraic and
geometric aspects of Hilbert module approach to operator theory and to survey
several applications of the theory of Hilbert modules in multivariable operator
theory. The topics which are studied include: generalized canonical models and
Cowen-Douglas class, dilations and factorization of reproducing kernel Hilbert
spaces, a class of simple submodules and quotient modules of the Hardy modules
over polydisc, commutant lifting theorem, similarity and free Hilbert modules,
left invertible multipliers, inner resolutions, essentially normal Hilbert
modules, localizations of free resolutions and rigidity phenomenon.

Hypoglossal schwannoma masquerading as a carotid body tumor.
Study Objective. To describe the clinical presentation, evaluation, and treatment of a hypoglossal schwannoma. Methods. We report an unusual case of a hypoglossal schwannoma presenting as a pulsatile level II neck mass at the bifurcation of the external and internal carotid arteries, mimicking a carotid body tumor. Radiologic findings are reviewed in detail. Results. A 59-year-old female presented to a tertiary care medical center with complaints of a pulsatile right-sided neck mass. An MRA of the neck was obtained demonstrating a 5âcm mass located at the carotid artery bifurcation and causing splaying of the internal and external carotids. Based on clinical presentation and imaging, a diagnosis of a carotid body tumor was conferred and the patient scheduled for excision. Intraoperatively, the mass was noted to arise from the hypoglossal nerve, remaining independent of the carotid artery. On histopathologic analysis, the mass was determined to be consistent with hypoglossal schwannoma. Conclusion. Though rare, the hypoglossal schwannoma should remain a consideration in the evaluation of a parapharyngeal space mass. As this report demonstrates, the clinical and radiologic presentation of a hypoglossal schwannoma may closely mimic that of the more common carotid body tumor
The Universal Kaehler Modulus in Warped Compactifications
We construct the effective theory of the universal Kaehler modulus in warped
compactifications using the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. The
spacetime dependent 10d solution is constructed at the linear level for both
the volume modulus and its axionic partner, and nontrivial cancellations of
warping effects are found in the dimensional reduction. Our main result is that
the Kaehler potential is not corrected by warping, up to an overall shift in
the background value of the volume modulus. We extend the analysis beyond the
linearized approximation by computing the fully backreacted 10d metric
corresponding to a finite volume modulus fluctuation. Also, we discuss the
behavior of the modulus in strongly warped regions and show that there are no
mixings with light Kaluza-Klein modes. These results are important for the
phenomenology and cosmology of flux compactifications.Comment: 28 pages, 1 figure; v2. corrected typos, added refs & minor
