Experimental economics: Methods, problems and promise

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the growing importance of experimentation in economic analysis. We present a variety of economic issues that have been explored with laboratory techniques. We also address some common objections to experimentation, as well as some of the principal lessons that have been learned.

    Experimental Economics

This is the first comprehensive treatment of laboratory experiments designed to evaluate economic propositions under carefully controlled conditions. While it acknowledges that laboratory experiments are no panacea, it argues cogently for their effectiveness in selected situations. Covering methodological and procedural issues as well as theory, Experimental Economics is not only a textbook but also a useful introduction to laboratory methods for professional economists. The emphasis is on organizing and evaluating existing results. The book can be used as an anchoring device for a course at either the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. Applications include financial market experiments, oligopoly price competition, auctions, bargaining, provision of public goods, experimental games, and decision making under uncertainty. The book also contains instructions for a variety of laboratory experiments.laboratory experiments, financial markets, price competition, auctions, bargaining, games, decision making, uncertainty

Reducing inventory by simplifying forecasting and using point of sale data

Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 69).This thesis assesses the value to vendors of using point of sale data to predict what retailers will order from them. In particular, we look at how The Gillette Company can use point of sale data generated by two of their customers, (Wal-Mart and Target), to predict the orders of all of Gillette's customers combined. The thesis also examines the impact on forecasts of shortening and simplifying the demand planning process. By improving the forecast of orders from their customers, vendors like Gillette can reduce safety stock inventory which is held as protection against unpredictable demand.by Atul Agarwal [and] Gregory Douglas Barton Holt.M.Eng.in Logistic

The Effects of Fish Trap Mesh Size on Reef Fish Catch off Southeastern Florida

    Get PDF
Catch and mesh selectivity of wire-meshed fish traps were tested for eleven different mesh sizes ranging from 13 X 13 mm (0.5 x 0.5") to 76 x 152 mm (3 X 6"). A total of 1,810 fish (757 kg) representing 85 species and 28 families were captured during 330 trap hauls off southeastern Florida from December 1986 to July 1988. Mesh size significantly affected catches. The 1.5" hexagonal mesh caught the most fish by number, weight, and value. Catches tended to decline as meshes got smaller or larger. Individual fish size increased with larger meshes. Laboratory mesh retention experiments showed relationships between mesh shape and size and individual retention for snapper (Lutjanidae), grouper (Serranidae), jack (Carangidae), porgy (Sparidae), and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae). These relationships may be used to predict the effect of mesh sizes on catch rates. Because mesh size and shape greatly influenced catchability, regulating mesh size may provide a useful basis for managing the commercial trap fishery

Did racial representation change at our outpatient sports medicine clinic during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Introduction/Objective • COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) • Increased infection, hospitalization, and death rates1,2 • Black Americans unequal access to outpatient care vs. White Americans 3 • Inequity worsened during the COVID-19 Pandemic 4 • Maine population: 94.25% “White;” 1.42% “Black” 5 • July 2020 COVID cases: 66.8% “White;” 22% “Black” 6 • Did this disparity reflect in in our sports medicine clinic?https://knowledgeconnection.mainehealth.org/lambrew-retreat-2021/1006/thumbnail.jp

Annual Variation in Northern Bobwhite Survival and Raptor Migration

    Get PDF
We estimated survival of radio-marked northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) on a managed prairie site in northeast Mississippi during 2 disparate winters (15 Sep-14 Apr 2000–2002). We retrospectively examined factors that may influence bobwhite survival. Pooled survival rates differed substantially between years (S 1⁄4 0.03 6 0.02 in 2000–2001 and S 1⁄4 0.36 6 0.16 in 2001–2002). Regional relative abundance of 3 species of raptors thought to be important predators of bobwhite was greater during 2000 compared to 2001 based on kriging of Christmas Bird Count (CBC) data. We demonstrate an approach for characterizing annual variation in spatial distribution of migratory raptors and suggest that annual variation in local winter predator context may be useful for explaining annual variation in winter survival of local bobwhite populations

Derivation of HLA Types from Shotgun Sequence Datasets

    Get PDF
The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is key to many aspects of human physiology and medicine. All current sequence-based HLA typing methodologies are targeted approaches requiring the amplification of specific HLA gene segments. Whole genome, exome and transcriptome shotgun sequencing can generate prodigious data but due to the complexity of HLA loci these data have not been immediately informative regarding HLA genotype. We describe HLAminer, a computational method for identifying HLA alleles directly from shotgun sequence datasets (http://www.bcgsc.ca/platform/bioinfo/software/hlaminer webcite). This approach circumvents the additional time and cost of generating HLA-specific data and capitalizes on the increasing accessibility and affordability of massively parallel sequencing
